hockeymom 2 Report post Posted October 12, 2006 Well, it is just silly to complain about traffic. Afterall, living in Toronto you've pretty much been promised that traffic is going to suck all day.I thought I would "get smart" this year and actually remember to check the traffic cameras before leaving the house for hockey.HA! The traffic site can't tell me which direction the cameras are pointed in!! Isn't that just silly?!So the traffic site is pretty much useless unless 1) it is daylight and I recognize the landscape or 2) traffic is equally good or bad in both directions at the same time.401 traffic
LegoDoom 0 Report post Posted October 12, 2006 On the right it has a link saying which way the camera is pointing.

hockeymom 2 Report post Posted October 13, 2006 OMG - Men who don't actually READ. LOLYes there is a link that says "which way is the camera facing" - and it explains that they CAN'T tell you which way the camera is facing from the website!!ummm - stereotypes anyone??? Let's see... just how many men WAS that who lept to a stunning conclusion about women drivers and then congratulated themselves over it???? LOLHere's what the site says..."Which way is the camera facing?Since we launched our live camera sites, we have received many questions asking "Which way is the camera facing?" Unfortunately, we cannot currently provide directional information beside the camera image. This is because the cameras, which are controlled by operators at the Ministry of Transportation, can be rotated 360 degrees as well as zoomed, panned and tilted. The computers which run the camera system cannot interpret this directional information for our web site at this time."** Edit: BTW - before someone points this out as yet another breakthrough by men... yeah, I can sit and figure out which side of the highway each camera is on and figure it out from that. I'm just stunned that a fairly expensive and comprehensive traffic system isn't more user friendly!

So are you mad that they don't just flat out tell you which way the camera is facing or are you mad because you have to figure it out yourself?
hockeymom 2 Report post Posted October 13, 2006 Seriously? Surprised would be more like it.The southern highway system tells you which direction; it is very user friendly and what I expected from the 401 system.DVP/GardinerWhen you think how much money gets spent on developing this system, and how much time and money and life people waste being stuck in traffic in Toronto... I expect it to be a user friendly system. LOL - a silly vent of where expectations and reality don't line up. But I did enjoy Mack jumping to a conclusion... :D
mack 44 Report post Posted October 13, 2006 I didn't jump to anything--I drove to it and needed no help with directions.I'm going to leave it up there cause it's so prett-ay.

chikinpotpie 137 Report post Posted October 13, 2006 I seem to have lost the plot. Are you venting about the cameras, the lack of knowledge on which direction they are facing, or that you wasted your time in the first place.
hockeymom 2 Report post Posted October 13, 2006 The little vent is that it isn't immediately obvious which direction they face in; I simply wasn't expecting that I'd have to figure out which direction they were facing in. It is a pain in the butt. Especially when you are time challenged getting out the door to hockey, or whatever. I'm genuinely surprised at the difference in ease of use between the two traffic systems in the same city.My little trip to the arena tonight was fairly clean - only 50 minutes to get there and 25 mins to get back home. But when I did the same trip last week (to the same arena only an hour later - when traffic "should" be lighter) it took 1 1/2 hours to get there. Like I said in the initial post - it is silly to complain about traffic in a major city. Five or six days each week I have to decide how much travel time to allow to get to the arena... Guess I was looking for something that would make that decision easier and was just surprised it wasn't as "clean" as I thought it would be.The problems in life are always where expectations and reality collide...LOL** EDIT: the cameras weren't in a consistent direction - which made the task at 6pm a bit disorienting.... and extremely frustrating. Oh well, maybe it IS a woman thing...LOL

Allsmokenopancake 0 Report post Posted October 13, 2006 Do the landmarks not tell you which way it's facing, the buildings in the background? Here, the traffic cam shows the Washington Monument, and if the traffic is headed that direction, I can generally guess that it's showing the 395 north. Not much need for cameras at home, donegal probably has the worst roads in the world, worse potholes than Iraq I reckon.
