It's his closing speed that catches people offguard. Almost the same angle and result everytime. (i.e. identical hit)

Yeah, I'd have a hard time including Kasparatis and Marchment as good hip checkers. Effective, maybe. Very few players can throw one without going low and basically taking a shot at the guy's knees.

It can be very effective even it isn't as devastating as Blake or Mclaren can make it. Heck Kaberle threw one a couple weeks ago. I don't think it left a mark, but it sure separated the guy from the puck.

It cuts down the amount of reflection or glare from the ice

As for the hits, I saw all of those on FSN Bay Area. Nobody is better at that than Kyle. He has been a man possest...its been great to watch :) :D

1. Crosby doesn't get hit (big) quite often. But there are some he takes (Hatcher).

2. Kyle Mclaren is a hip checking GOD. Wow especially that first hit was amazing.

I use to use yellow lenses when I played paintball....helped with glare as well as made things look sharper.
