I know plenty of dudes who don't wear shoulder pads, and that's their call. Personally, I like to go hard in corners and some dudes can't control their sticks so I prefer some paddage. I recently ditched my bulky CCM 652 pads with caps bigger than a small Malaysian baby and picked up a set of Easton Classics:

SO fellow weekend warriors, what is your shoulder protection (or lack thereof) of choice?

All the guys on my team use shoulder pads of varying sizes, except for one. I use Itech SP50's. As I've mentioned before, it feels like nothing at all. I'm not too worried about going crashing into the boards. I'm more worried about getting hit by shots when I'm on the doorstep.

The only guy on my team that doesn't use pads is a big Samoan guy who's got big shoulders anyways. He's mainly looking for something to protect his heart/chest area when blocking shots, so he's considering the SP50's and removing the shoulder caps, or a roller hockey padded shirt like the Thorax or the Hyper one.

I was going to suggest the Itech SP50s but wasn't sure the model name then looked them up and saw we were talking the same thing. How do you like those? I was considering those but in the end went Easton...

I tried the 5030s for a few games, but didn't like them. Felt too flimsy.

I have those Sher-Wood 5030 tradition shoulder pads. I wear those in the 2 beer leagues I play and love em.

Love them. They weigh next to nothing because they are next to nothing. I don't feel them at all. Tried the 5030's on at the store, but didn't like the "foam" feeling and I could imagine cooking in them. The SP50's feel like they would breathe better.

I use an old pair of supra 252's from 93-94. Alot of themy team is upgrading due to the increased amount of physical contact this year.

When I play mens leauge, I will normally just wear some older itechs, or depending on the competition nothing, never wear them for stick time because jenerally people dont hack as bad as they do in games but its nice to play against players that respect your choices in lack of padding and keep there elbows and sticks down.

I don't wear any at the moment. I play in a non-checking B level college IM league, and I'm not in the thick enough to warrant using some.

I do own a pair of RBK 6k's, they're the only thing that felt good, but they do ride up on me. I've been thinking of wearing my suspenders over the shoulder pads to keep them down better

Plus I go from being a house to being a mansion when I have them on

I use a padded shirt from Mission. I think it was originally designed for roller hockey but it takes the sting out of slapshots.

I've currently got a set of Mission M-2 shoulders that are too bulky and hot for me.

I'm currently comparing the Easton Classic shoulder pads to the Sherwood 5030 shoulder pads. Has anyone tried them and compared how much protection they offer and how much warmer they make you?

I had a pair of the Classics before returning them and settling on Sher-Wood Traditions. I like the Classics, but they weren't the right size for me (I wear XL and these were L). I'd say they're a bit more protecting than the Sher-Woods, especially in the spine. Maybe if I had the Classics in the right size, I'd stick with them, but the Traditions fit my needs.

I've never really noticed how "hot" pads make me feel when I'm on the ice. Just use a performance shirt and you'll be fine.

So you'd say the Classics are a bit more protective but not much difference? What's the material like on both of them? And when you say you got the wrong size do you mean they sent the wrong size or they run really small?

Thanks a lot for the feedback, even though we have probably 50 LHS' around here, none of them carry traditional shoulders

Yes, Classics did indeed seem to offer a bit more protection, but not a huge amount more. The Classics, if I recall, were made of similiar material to modern style pads that you'd see on Jofas or other Easton models.

The Traditions have the feel of your first set of pads from mites (provided you're in your 20s or so), but I've read that they actually have very modern materials for padding inside. The caps are lower profile but very sturdy, as are the bicep pads. The chest/back pads are very light, thin, and flexible and probably disperse a reasonable amount of shock from the minimal contact you'd face in beer league. However, taking a slapper off the chest in these pads would most likely hurt, so if upper body shot blocking is in your repertoire, I wouldn't recommend these.

I never wear size L in anything. The pads are probably standard sized, it's just that they ran a bit high on me and my well defined pecs of steel  .

I'd also maybe consider Bauer SP60s. Similiar laceup style and minimalist padding as seen in the Traditions.

I wanted to try the 5030s but my LHS only has M, L and XXL. I definitely need a XL so that's out of the question. Guess I'll stick with my 6.0LEs, they're a lot more protective anyway.

One thing about the 5030 is I wish it was about 3" longer.

True that, coming from a set of CCM 652s with ample belly coverage to the throwback feel of Traditions took some getting used to. But I'll take the lightweight feel over having too much pad for my needs.

Thanks for the feedback Hook!

I'll probably order a pair of the 5030's then. I only play in non-check and honestly I've taken some slappers in the arms without shoulders without much pain. I'm just looking for a little something in the "just in case" category. Not much hooking/crosschecking/high slappers anyways.

And they DO look like the Coopers I rocked back in Mites...way cool.

I actually got my 6.0s in XL because of the length(width of the L vs XL was about the same and the XL is a little loose on me), I want my shoulder pads to come down to my pants. I don't want to take a stick or puck to the abs... again. :(

Too bad they don't make shoulder pads more adjustable because some of us have broad shoulders but aren't grossly overweight. <_<
