Tennis Grip?

Recommended Posts

Hey, I was sick of holes in my gloves. So I needed a solution. My brother loves tennis and had a few tennis grips lying around. So I figured hey it can't hurt. I tried using an over grip. Which is a grip that is designed to be placed over another grip, hence the name over grip. I put this grip over my existing tape grip job. It feels pretty good, though it seems a little to grippy, so I am going to experiment with different grips to find the perfect one. My question is this. Will this reduce the wear of my palms greatly? or not really? there isn't any glue and I can choose a wide range of grips. From towel to leather to cork. so is this a good idea?

I used to use these on all my sticks: http://www.ektelon.com/product/product_det...amp;Product=903 I liked them - they worked pretty well. I remember that it took awhile to adjust, but once I did, they were gold.

Somehow, I've gotten back into the habit of just using white tape and baby powder, and I don't see myself making the transition back.

My palms. They where the palms on the Bauer 300 gloves. So since the glove is so cheap doesn't help the whole argument. But over here in Australia I don't' like spending $300 on a pair of XV gloves.

I tried it (tennis grips) and didn't like it. I use normal stick tape for my knob and grip tape for the rest of the grip portion.

What is that grip tape like to use? I've seen it available in my LHS but haven't tried it. It's the stuff that looks all wrinkled up, right? Is it more grippy? Is less abrasive on your glove palms? What's are the advantages over regular stick tape?

Renfrew grip tape is very easy on the gloves. Powerflex grip tape is the same stuff, but leaves a sticky residue on your glove, you may or may not like that. I like both better than Tackimac for saving the palms of gloves. No holes since I switched to this stuff.

not a big fan of the powerflex...it was "can't-open-my-top-hand-to-get-it-off-my-stick" sticky, plus the nasty residue that plagued my palms for quite some time afterwards.

Are you sure you're using Powerflex? I used a Powerflex knock off and you're absolutely right, gummy and nasty. But the Powerflex seems to hold up just fine for me.

well, either there's a big conspiracy in the athletic tape distribution industry, or the stuff i used was powerflex :]

edit: http://www.puckhoghockey.com/anpogrta.html was what i used. we had a couple display cases of it. taped the top of my stick like normal, then used that over top, wrapping it twice so it would secure itself to...itself. i also didn't like that it came apart a bit and got "stringy" after a couple uses.

thats the one I always use

It's great stuff if you can but it wears out after two games. Sometimes I leave it on for more than that but it just gets messy and it doesn't do much after that.

And whats the sticky residue you guys are talking about? It's perfectly fine

I just get the stuff at my local tool shop (LTS). It's pretty much the same thing as grip tape, black, sticky on both sides, and cheap. Plus, it doesn't leave any globs on my gloves, just discolors the palms black. It lasts me, on average, 3-4 games.

I am a big fan of grip tape in particular but have found similar experiences to the Power Flex users. I tape both the top hand portion and the general area for the bottom hand that I have found to get a good snap/slapshot off. The tape on both areas do get wrinkled up so I "seal" the end of my top hand and the ends of the bottom hand with normal hockey tape. It takes me roughly 6 practices/games to get the overly sticky residue off the tape and it is a pain waiting for this to disappear. The grip due to the texture of the tape is great afterwards. After every 3-4 games, I notice that the bottom hand portion has sizeable holes and that I have to re-tape. My glove palms are fine with this tape, but the palms per se are a mix of 2 different types (goat and something) and, to me, are thicker than normal palms. I have yet to try the Renfrew grip tape. I hope this helps.

I wonder if other users of powerflex where he plays experience the same thing. Humidity or lack there of can cause differences in tape(well the glue on the tape)... also the temperature that it's stored at can make a difference.

BTW, Renfrew tape sucks. I'll only use it to make a knob, then cover it in a few layers of andover. Simply because with andover I have to order it from online and renfrew is readily available everywhere.

Tennis racquet over grip tape gets my vote. Have been using that fore ever. Make sure it is over grip, not the grip. The standard grip is too thick.

Stuff is like $4 for a set of three and lasts a 1000 years.

If you go through a lot of sticks then get something like this:

I play a lot of tennis as well, and there are grips that are tacky and some that are not too bad. Tournagrip would not be too tacky and IMO be easy on yor gloves, but I don't know how long they'd last. I quit using the stuff for tennis because it didn't last long. What kind of sticks are you using. When I went to a OPS ( Bauer Vapor V2) I made a much smaller knob on my stick, I guess you could even with wood.

Tournagrips are awful IMO - always gave me blisters when I played tennis with them. I was using worn-down Yonex supergrap and Wilson pro on my sticks. i actually found them too grippy brand new.

I think there's a resident salesman on here that will provide you with all the info you'll need. Possibly too much info.
