In what order do you put on your gear?

Recommended Posts

I know this may sound newbish but I've only been playing ice hockey for two seasons. I start out putting on my shin pads then my sox then my pants and then my skates. This makes it hard for me to stick my tounges( I wear them below my shinpads) under my shinpads after i have them all strapped up. I would like to put on my socks then skates then slip shin pads under sucks and then put on my pants but I'm not able to as my pants will not fit over my skates and do not have a zipper. I was wondering if there is any other method to puting on my gear that would be more efficient.

sorry for the newbish question and thanks in advance.

You could always just have your shorts on but not fastened up, so then you could move then down to your ankles when you need to attach your socks your jock and have then up when you put your skates on.

OK, I felt badly for my sarcastic reply and just asked my daughter what she does. She dresses in the same order as you do and sticks the tongue under her shin pads.

She looked at me blankly for a minute (thanks slipslap... I got the "oh jeez another completely dumb question from my mother" look over this one... you owe me...LOL) and then she said...

"you have your shin pad not so tight that you can't fit it in, and then just lift up the bottom of your shin pad and shove the tongue up. After that you tape your shin pad snug. Sounds like he is putting his shin pad on too tight at the start"

I wear my shins over my tongues as well. This is how i do it:

1) put on socks

2) pull them op around my thighs

3) put on skates

4) bunch socks up around my ankles

5) put on shins

6) pull socks up over shins

7) attach tops of socks to velcro shorts

8) put on pants (with zippered legs)

I learned this by observing others.

that is what i do, and it definately allows you to put your shins over your tounges

I use Nike v-14 shin guards so I only strap the top strap, put my socks on rolling up the sock half way up my shin, and tuck my tongue under the shin pad.

This is what I do too, except mine are itechs.

donkey87 has it right, but realize that you must use socks that have ankles "stretchy" enough to fit over the kneecap part of the shinguards as you pull them down.

I think you need to put your tounges out instead and that will get rid of your problem. Plus it looks better.

Actually, my daughter just started putting her tongues under her shin pad this year. OTG was looking at a vid of her skating and said "how come she has her tongue hanging out... tell her to tuck it under her shin pad". I asked why and he said (I'll have to get him to check this to make sure I'm not misquoting him) it would increase her stability and help her skating improve... Left out, the tongue does nothing to support you and can make the skate looser around the ankle.

Anyway I told MissD and although she was initially a bit sceptical that it might impede forward flex, she immediately tried it out (OTG's word is gold in our house LOL). She said it felt strange at first but DID make a difference in her skating and her leg and foot felt like they were working more as one unit and it didn't impede her forward flex at all.

If you step back and think about it, it doesn't really make sense that the skate manufacturers design skates with these big tongues just for the asthetics of looking good flopping over your skate. Good heavens, the skate would probably be LIGHTER with a shorter tongue (LOL, that's for you light freaks). Likely, they've designed them longer for the express purpose of tucking them under your shin pad.

I wear my tongues tucked, and this is how I get dressed-

- Put on jock

- Put on socks; since I can't pull them up over my knee I leave them down

- Put on skates (with skate guards on)

- Strap on shinnies

- Pull socks over shinnies, attach to jock (velcro)

- Put on pants (and I don't even have to unzip them)

I have a long compression jock with velcro for the socks.

1. Put on jock

2. Put on pants (they have a belt)

3. Pull socks up over my knee

4. Put on skates

5. Put on shin pads (over tongue)

6. Pull socks down over shin pads and attach tops to velcro

7. Put on shoulder pads (if wearing them)

8. Put on elbow pads

9. Put on jersey

10. Put on helmet

11. Put on gloves

12. Suck at hockey :D

Im in the exact same boat. I just tuck the tongue up under the shin guard once its on. Its kinda hard but Ive just always done it that way.

I love the "tongue in or out" discussion. Go with whatever feels better; not what looks better. Only a faygo would care about the appearance out on the ice rather than how it feels.

Over the years I've eventually come down to this:

  • Put on jock
  • Attatch socks to jock (velcro or whatever you use)
  • Put on pants
  • Put on skates and do them up
  • Put on shin pads, placing the tongue underneath
  • Pull down socks and tape them tight
  • Put on shoulder pads
  • Put on elbow pads and slash guards
  • Jersey
  • Helmet
  • Gloves

Just to be comprehensive...
