The iPhone has officially been anounced. It features a 3.5 inch widescreen display, and comes in 4 or 8 GB flavors.

Some of the features include a FULL Safari browser, where you can browse ANY site in the world, not just ones set up for mobile internet. Built in Google Maps, so you can get directions on the go.

The phone has a sensor that can tell which way the screen is oriented so it can switch from horizontal to verticle and vice versa. There are many widgets, such as weather and stocks built in.

The device also features a fullscreen ipod for widscreen video, and music. Another cool thing about the phone is Visual Voicemail. This menas that if you haev more than 1 voicemail, you dont have to listen to all of them to get to a specific one. You get a list of the voicemails you have and who they are fro, and you can listen to whichever one you would like.

The entire screen is touch sensitive and Apple has patented a revolutionary input method called multi-touch which allows you to use two fingers to input data or to zoom in and out. Wifi is built into the unit.

It is coming out in June and is locked to Cingular at first. Which means it is a GSM phone, and if you unlock it, it will also work on Tmobile.

All of the information is at the folowing website: http://www.apple.com/iphone/

You can watch the keynote here: http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/j47d52oo/event/

Only problem I see with this phone is that if your screen scratches / cracks, you're 600 in the hole. The whole multi-functional phone/pda/computer concept has always been questionable, but I think that Apple could be the one company to produce a product that actually holds its own.

Exactly. Knock on wood I've never had any screen issues with an iPod and I know I treat those more harshly than I would a phone.

and if your screen cracks on your mobile phone you are.... screwed.

Not quite. Given, you can't see what you're typing, but a phone should still be fully functional even with a cracked screen. Meanwhile, with a touchscreen that cracks, scratches, etc..., you're probably going to lose a fair amount of functionality.

Thats why you get insurance on your phone. Its also nice when you're drunk and drop it in the toilet.

I'm not sure how well it will work on T-Mobile. Theoretically it will, especially now that it is illegal to make a phone so it can't be use on another network however some problems arise with the iPhone. Visual Voicemail is a feature that required close cooperation between Apple and Cingular. I'm not sure how T-Mobile would achieve this, maybe Apple will work with them maybe not.

I'm really stuck between whether I should get the iPhone or not. First it would involve me switching carriers... to Cingular... which previously would be my undisputed last choice. I also will need to wait and see how the data plans will be handled for the iPhone. If it can use the Cingular smartphone unlimited data package ($20/mo) I'll get it. If they make you use one of the blackberry or pda plans then theres no way I can afford it. The iPhone is intended to use the internet almost constantly, theres no way you could get a limited plan and get full use out of the phone.

So when does a real iPod come out like this? With the widescreen and the video that moves when you flip the screen and everything. Still got 2 years on my phone contract and in Canada so this is out of the question for a while.

If you look at the Revolutionary phone page, it appears the End Call button is in a stupid spot, as that is the part of the phone that touches your cheek. Several of my friends had similar problem with the LG Chocolate. I hope it does well, but I'm gonna guess a new one will come out in less than a year and this one will just go down the drain. Good luck Mack! (no, seriously ;) )

*edit - sorry, just watched the keynote. Looks ingenious and beautiful. Damn mack im jealous

Doesn't the screen shut off when you hold it to your ear? So you wouldn't have a problem with that.

yes, it has a proximity sensor that shuts the screen off when it gets close to your face.

I don't see this phone having as much immediate impact as all the anticipation seems because of the price and the fact that third party applications will not be available. the technology that apple has showcased will definately make future phones from all manufacturers better though

I was talking to my boss and he told me that Cingular does not insure any PDA phones.

have you forgotten the RAZR was $500 with contract and $800 by itself when it first came out? and that thing was and still is a heaping pile of crap.

this thing will sell like hotcakes. it's not Apple's intention to compete with smartphones, but it WILL BE the 'hot trendy thing everybody needs to have' when it comes out.

and if your screen cracks on your mobile phone you are.... screwed.

But the screen on the standard mobile phone is much smaller, which means that it is far less likely to break, both because there is less screen, and for structural issues. If the screen on this kind of device goes at all wonky, input probably won't work. A keypad can get screwed in all sorts of ways and still be functional, though you may need to press harder on it, etc. A phone needs to work under all kinds of mistreatment and I know so many people who have iPod problems that I would be leery of these until the jury comes back. Heck, wasn't there a class action filed against Apple because of the iPod's rather limited durability ?

The big one for me, though, is that there is no way you'd be able to dial that thing without looking. Voice dialing sucks. I need to be able to dial by touch. With most smaller form-factor phones this is hard, with an all touch-screen device it seems like it would be impossible.

JR's right, there's a limit on what they'll insure. I'll just have to be careful and not let the ball/chain wash it in a coat.
