Blake's doesn't jump at you as a marquee name, but I've been able to catch a number of Islander games this year and he's truly a special player. He goes balls out every shift, and if definitely one of those guys you love to have on your team and absolutely despise playing against. All other things considered, he has damn good numbers this year as well. Same goes for Williams who IMO has been the best player not named Brind'Amour on an explosive, yet inconsistent Carolina team.

I'm not a fan of the "every team represented" theory. Blake deserves to be there, but I don't really think Williams or Perrault do.

I still wish they'd allow the skills competition to be based on the most skilled, rather than the most skilled amongst those voted in.

Datsyuk(41GP, 12G, 26A, 38P) instead of Smyth(34GP, 21G, 12A, 33P)? Smyth has more points per game barely. More importantly Smyth has 21G compared to 12! and in 7 less games. The second assist can distort how effective a player really is. Goals are straight forward though. So why Datsyuk over Smyth?

Straka's good, but he's on Jagr's coat tails. He wouldn't be anywhere near an allstar game without his supporting cast. I am still shocked Campbell is in the starting line-up. Damn Buffalo and their bandwagon jumping, ballot stuffing fans.

Just have to say congratualtions to Philippe Boucher. With both of his parents having only weeks to live, I think this will be a very special moment for both him, and very touching that one of his last memories that his parents will have is their son playing in the All Star game.

Justin Williams stood out as the worst choice for me, isn't Staal on the team as well? Heck, I would have taken Brind'Amour or Whitney as the first/second Carolina player. Also, Bouwmeester/Chara/Timonen over Jokinen/Savard/Kariya is questionable. Granted, you can't see strong defensive play in any statistic, but having to accommodate undeserving players at forward is an issue.

same here, thats horrible, when I watch an All-Star game I do not want to see Ryan Smyth bang in a rebound, I do not want to see Perreault win face offs (thats all he can pretty much do)

What about Samsonov, he got robbed!!! To be honnest I'm pretty dissapointed that Latendresse is not in the rookie game. I might only watch the fastest shot competition to see how Souray is doing and that's it.

I don't have cable and the owner of the Blackhawks doesn't play the home games on television... therein, I don't get to watch much hockey -- I can't really take the festivities of the All-Star Game for granted.

Hell, the games today on NBC were the first hockey I've been able to watch since I moved to Chicago in August.

Did Gretzky pick this team? It is reminiscent of Team Canada's Olympic team in that they primarily went with guys that may have had a good year last year or in seasons past. What about guys like Frolov, Savard, Nylander, Whitney, Kozlov, Bergereon, Malkin, and Kovalchuk who are all playing well this year? Not guys like Nash, Gagne, Zetterberg, Guerin, etc.

I know they have to represent somebody from each team, can't they just send a trainer or something?

i really do agree it's a crime jagr's not there. he would've won the scoring title & most goals last year if he didn't get hurt towards the end. & thornton & cheech take over.

& as for straka riding jagr's coat tails. i dunno about that. he has a lot more chemistry with nylander than anything. jagr doesn't generally get primary assists, the only beneit is he draws the other teams top dman to him & straka can sneak up in the slot.

I'm surprised that Sundin wasn't on the team, but obviously Jagr got screwed more. Jason Blake an all star? Can't say this is out of the ordinary though, the all star game is a joke. I can't remember the last one I watched.

That's the generic term for it. I also included "All-Star" in the title out of habit/formality as well. Young stars game sounds decent but the Skills comp* has to be put to sleep.

I agree there can be better players picked for the line-up for both teams. Young stars like Dustin Penner, Corey Perry, Paul Stastny as well as Latendresse could have been picked. But as mentioned before, it has to be spread out to make sure all teams are represented. I just might be watching the skills and young stars games as well.

Hot stove is reporting the reverse and all players were contacted and asked whether or not they'd accept the invitation. That way nobody would publicly say no. Kovalchuk and Jagr apperantly both declined.
