Nothing Like Dorm Life...

Recommended Posts

Some asshole burned popcorn and set the fire alarm off at 3:34 this morning. We were outside (in 10 degree weather) for about 20 minutes before they let us back in, but they system isn't functioning properly, so the alarm is still blairing...

First alarm of the semester; honestly, I'm surprised we went this long (about two weeks now).

:P A friend of mine told me the alarm went off 45 times in semester last year. A few times it was douchebags pulling it, in plain view of a camera. All of them where expelled.

It costs anywhere between $5,000-$10,000 for each fire responce apparently.

I'm staying at home long enough to finish my Engineering degree and then my folks are moving, so when I go for my Law degree I'm going to be living in dorms. I can't wait to see how bad my marks tank after the first year.

Just wait for next year when you get a house, its a whole different ball game. Not only do you have to cook and clean for yourself, you have to make sure all your bills are paid on time, deal with your loser roommate who comes out of his room three times a day to pee and get food in his between marathon Warcraft sessions, the roommate who is up drunk at 4 am every Monday night when you have 8am class on Tuesday, the roommate whose girlfriend lives next door, and my personal favorite from last night- deal with the man and woman squatters parked in your back parking lot in a creepy chi-mo van that smells like chemicals. Oh yeah, all landlords are assholes. Seriously, they all want to make your life as miserable as possible.

Don't forget the $50 worth of groceries that you bring in after a weekend home, that are all gone by Wed because your a**hole roommates eat all your food.

Yeah...been there...done that.

What, no fashion school dorm stories? Awwww.

Edit: At least in a house you can add means to create more drinking games

I wish I did have some dorm stories. Our dorms are pretty sad, so I decided to get an apartment. The dorming situation in all Manhattan schools is pretty bad.

I dont understand the stories of the "roommate ate my food". I live in an apartment with a friend of mine and we have a wild arangment where we both buy food and both eat whatever we want from the collective cornucopia we have assembelled. And hey, if he has a little more of my crap, it all evens out in the end.

But it sounds like he was a friend before you moved in, so that's a little different. I'd give a friend I knew a lot more leeway with my crap than my freshman roommates and even the guys I moved into a house with.

yeah I guess I would have to agree with that. He was a friend before I moved in. And now, of course, as the course of nature goes, I dispise him.

I think it would be a lot different living with one guy (especially a friend) than with six others like I do. I would let a lot of stuff go if it was just the two of us, but then again a house of seven gets a lot dirtier, louder, and more stuff gets taken. Having two showers for seven people is ridiculous, especially when only one of them works. But the absolute worst part is the retards your roommates bring over. I swear the entire hyphy movement takes over my living room every single weekend.

The key there (as mack said) is you knew the guy before...and have an "agreement". I didn't know the people I ended up living with first year. They seemed to have an "agreement" too...I bought food. They didn't. They ate my food. What's not to get.

If that had been my only complaint it wouldn't have been to bad. The Thursday morning (after a Wed pub night) that I woke up to a living room FULL of broken beer bottles was a bit much. I ended up only buying food I could keep in my locked room, and spent lots of time at a buddies place sleeping on his couch. It was a BRUTAL year.

My roomate has the fattest girlfriend in all of Manitoba. Came home early from class the other day because I was sick and they were in the shower together. Not too sure how it was possible, but it was disgusting. The guy used to be awesome and always up for a good time, but now he spends half of his time with his girlfriend and the other half at the gym. Hasn't gotten drunk once since September.

reading all these stories makes me can't wait to move into a house with 6 other guys next year. although, i've lived with them all in residence for 1-2 years prior, but we too all made a "constitution", laying out all the ground rules for the house, such as self fullfillment areas, groceries, smoking, etc. i'm hoping it all works out.

and as noted before, i've met at least a dozen landlords over the course of house hunting, and they're all shisters waiting to rob you of your money. its pretty retarded when a landlord has a 3 or 4 story house, 5 or 6 people per floor, with each floor paying around $3000, and the mortgage for the house being maybe $2000 a month...

At least you aren't in California. The house I have up here in Oregon is in shitty shape, but its 7 bedrooms and its one of the best locations on campus. The seven of us pay $3000 a month in rent, which I think is ridiculous. My buddy came home for Christmas from California and was amazed at how nice our house was and how cheap it is. For him and his 9 roommates, it costs them $7000 a month for their 5 bedroom house, meaning they all share rooms.

From what I've gathered, landlords don't give a shit about students because they can get away with it. Obviously students don't treat their house well or do anything to keep it in good shape, which is understandable. My biggest issue is how many major things are wrong with our house that after five months still haven't been fixed, namely the infectious mold in an upstairs bedroom that is a result of a wall that leaks.

Lee- I would also advise against living with six other guys, but it seems like you have it planned right. Are you good friends with all six of the guys? I lived in the dorms last year with 5 of the 6 guys in my house, but four of us kind of form a faction, and the other three form another. I guess that would be normal though, I don't think you can expect seven guys who live together to hang out all the time.

Manhattan real estate takes the cake. I have a duplex (2 floors) in the city on the Upper East Side and it costs us about 2400 a month. You may be thinking, wow, thats a great price for two people, especially on the upper east side (the most affluent part of the city). The deal is pretty good, I mean we have a spiral stair case and a very large ourdoor space, enough room for a 10x10 gazebo, full grill, fire pit, etc. Its very nice but... we have under 1000 sq feet... which is tiny. The living space is impossibly small, but its a nice first apartment. This is one of the better deals in the city. There are people paying a million bucks for a studio apartment...

Christ you guys have it rough. Our 2 bedroom apartment is $800 a month. I know a group of 5 cousins and 1 friend that live together in a 3 bedroom apartment and it costs them $180 a month each for rent.

No he's been with her for about a year and a half. I got him to bang her so I could bang her bestfriend, (my current gf). We both laughed around about how he rode a hog and how disgusting she was, but somewhere along the line her flabby arms and triple chins grew on him. Quite sad actually, the porker runs his life.
