Blacking out bottom of sticks

Recommended Posts

I dont know accurate this is, but someone in the equipment section said they had one of his sticks, and that he sprayed the bottom black even though it was already black, they also said they had no idea why.

David Vyborny (CBJ) blacks out his whole stick.... (a wood Sherwood from what I hear)

He actually blacks his out in a different way...doesn't use spray paint or anything. He takes normal cloth tape and rubs the tacky glue on the sticky side all over his stick.

Does Derek Roy still paint his sticks(and then blowtorch it)?

DerekRoy.jpg

paint? yes. blowtorch? can't tell from pictures.

I think TBLfan's got the pic of Roy blowtorching his stick after painting it.

yeah, just didn't want to add the name to the list if I wasn't sure. And I dont care enough about the buffo-slugs to look through their pics.

i was always told it is done to hide the puck better from the goalie, but that doesnt really explain why some people who do it use white tape, maybe there is a different reason i am unaware of, i just realized how little posts i have on here for how long i have been on here (old school corebeamer)

what I heard was that he started blacking out the bottom of his stealths until easton decided to just make the bottom black for him.

This might be the case....here is a pic of his stick (sorry for the quality, just from my phone...)

im still a little fuzzy on the reason people do this...just personal preference?

I remember hearing people used to do it with woods to toughen the blade/hosel up. I just assume people did it out of habit once OPS/shafts and blades came out. Plus it seemed like a lot of people did it when the brightly colored OPS were fashionable- TPS Responses, yellow Synergy Grips, etc. Players probably hated looking down on something that bright.

I do it and from what I have heard it is because of the colours. Its distracting to skate around with your head up using your periphirals and seeing yellow down there.

wade redden used to do it.....i think some1 said something about getting paid to do it to block out the easton logo at some other messageboard.....but its probobly to hide the puck so the defenseman may not know if he has it.....if i was a goalie i would paint my pads all black so it hides the puck when they argue if its in or not and they review it.....but i would never spraypaint my sticks....since the blades wood anyways

He does his whole stick that way? I didnt know that! That must take a long time! They had one for sale at their last game...I knew I should have bought it! (I didnt get to look at it, only seen the price list)

How would one go about painting or spray painting the bottom of their stick and making it look good. my friend is an idiot and tried this on one of my sticks by lightly sanding down the composite part and applying a couple of coats but it looks bad.
