What's with American Announcers?

Recommended Posts

The Quarterback runs the offense in football. Someone "quarterbacking" the power play would be referring to someone running the power play. The same would go for a defense man back in his zone making an outlet pass because he has everyone in front of him to choose from.

Post of the Year

i'm american and im biased too the canadian announcers are MUCH better than the americans.

jim hughson is the best btw

He doesn't shut up long enough for any color guy to add anything. I don't know if it's intentional but he tries to do both jobs and it gets annoying.

JD knows more about NHL hockey than 100% of the people on this forum.

I don't doubt his hockey knowledge at all, but I still can't stand him. A lot of people know hockey and don't make very good hockey broadcasters... And he used to always be on Sattelite Hotstove between periods on Hockey Night in Canada, and regardless of the topic, he'd always just talk about the Rangers. The lockout = what the Rangers players/management thought about it; the Olympics = Which Rangers players were going, and which ones deserved to go that weren't.

I hate every broadcaster except for Chris Cuthbert and Peter Mcnab. For the people living in Colorado, we have the privilage of hearing McNab every game, and maybe once a year do I get to hear Chris Cuthbert.

That's my big problem with him too...that, and after what...3-4 versions of EA NHL games...I've had enough.

i think doc emerick is pretty horrible... if you werent watching a game and you listened to him describe what was going on, you'd have no idea what was going on. it also doesnt help that hes got an annoying voice.

I agree with you on Emrick, it seems as though he's more concerned in showing off his obscure hockey knowledge and expansive vocabulary than calling a crisp game. He ruined the playoffs for me last year, the CBC broadcasts on OLN were far better.

My favorite Jim Hughson thing is: "here's Joe Sakic, native of Burnaby, BC, former Lethbridge Bronco, passes to...." He manages to say all this while Joe crosses the blueline and sets up a goal. The fact that Joe played in Lethbridge 20 years ago means nothing to Hughson. He just wants to share every trivial fact he ever read. Giving him Drew Whatshisname is like penance but the fans suffer listening to those two late on Saturday night.

The EA sports games ruined Hughson for me too. I think it was NHL 2003 where they were cracking jokes during the game, after that I can't stand the sound of his voice.

Remenda usually does a good job but you never get to hear him.

But that is the difference between Radio and TV play by play. Radio has to paint every picture for the listener...TV can have those moments where they talk away from the game...some of the best TV pbp I've ever seen are the guys who know when to shut the hell up and let the picture do the talking. Radio doesn't have that option.

Example: Stanley Cup finals this year...at the end of Game 7...CBC announcers are quiet....shots of the crowd going nuts...players...their families...I flipped to (whoever - NBC I think) and they were yacking about stupid shit...trying to create emotions for the viewer. The scene was doing a better job of that without them.

well the best commentator had to be mike lang with his crazy sayings and by the way i really cant stand CBC becuase they are very biased when they are suposed to be a neutral station. I dont really mind announcers unless they talk constantly about the penalties and say "that wasnt a hook" yet the guy has his stick on the other guy's gloves. it's like wake up there are new rules so get used to them

I notice they've been splitting up Mutt & Jeff (Cole & Neale) lately. They are both much easier to deal with, without each other.

Lang is easily the most over-rated guy I've ever heard. Blatant homer, doesn't pay attention to the game, argues with his partners, etc...

Keep in mind he usually does Devils games. How often can you say "dumped in, defense picks it up and dumps it out?

Watching the Detroit/Philly game on OLN (via TSN). Not sure who the guy doing color with Emerick is...but he just used the term "Mastodonic" to describe 2 saves made by the Detroit Goalie (MacDonald)...in context it was:

"He just made 2 Mastodonic saves"...

What does a prehistoric relative of the elephant have to do with goaltending?

Also...(and this is a generalization) Why do American Announcers use terminology from other sports when they are doing hockey games. They always refer to Quarterbacking the powerplay...and he used the term "jumpshot" to describe a tip in goal that Forsberg scored...(it was a tip in off a goalmouth scramble).

Now, I guess the other sports terms are to help new fans understand...The QB of the powerplay...I suppose that will help a fan understand the importance of the pointman...but why not just describe and teach new fans the "hockey terms" instead of relating it to other sports?

How do you guys find US announcers & what do you guys think when you get to watch a Canadian broadcast (TSN or CBC)...am I just biased because I'm Canadian?

Mastodonic is synonomous with huge, I dont see a problem in using it. I have NEVER heard any announcer say anything about a jumpshot to parallel a tip in... it dosent even make sense.

Let's not forget the great Danny Gallivan of CBC. "...and Savard fires a cannonading shot from the point" or "Robinson with a spinnerama". I remember hearing a story on Hockey Night after Gallivan passed about how he received a letter from an English teacher (in Canada) chiding him for his use of "spinnerama", saying that that word was not in the English language. They said he wrote back and said "It is now".

There's a fine line between being entertaining and being a sideshow. The job of the announcers is to enhance the game, not to overshadow it. The ones that overshadow the game with their schtick should never do nationally televised games.
