A rule question, I've never seen it happen

Recommended Posts

OK, so this is going to sound retarded, but it came from a drunken conversation at the caps/rags game last week, which I just remembered when I was talking to one of the lads I was at the game with.

There are rules that govern the length/curve of a players stick

But say, the goalie gets his stick knocked into the corner, and the player gives him his (which I have seen happen) to cover, then as the play shifts out of the zone, the player goes to retrive the goalie stick for him.

However, while he is getting it, there is a quick turnover, and the puck comes down the boards with a forward forechecking.

Would the player be called for a penalty if he played the puck back out with the goalies stick?

I said he would, my mate said no.

Clearly this is the type of conversation piece that could only come up when having a few, but thought I would see what the general consensus would be

And yes, I know, I am an idiot

I must be an idiot as well. I'm kinda' curious how this topic goes.

I would guess no penalty, especially if it was a defensive play and the player did not advance with the puck.

I had to throw a technical twist into it :)

I didn't think a skater was allowed to hold a goalie's stick period. But I've seen the refs let stupid stuff like that go.

In fact at a lightning game earlier this season one of the caps players lost his helmet, went off in a change. After being replaced he went back onto the ice picked up his helmet and skated back to the bench, 6 skaters and a goalie and no penalty.

TBL:

http://www.nhl.com/hockeyu/rulebook/rule45.html

B. A goalkeeper may continue to play with a broken stick until a stoppage of play or until he has one legally handed to him by a teammate.

D. A goalkeeper whose stick is broken or illegal may not go to the players' bench for a replacement but must receive his stick from a teammate.

Does not require a stoppage, can be done during play.

http://www.nhl.com/hockeyu/rulebook/rule19.html

(NOTE 2) A player who participates in the play, who checks or who intentionally prevents the movement of an opponent, or who intentionally plays the puck while carrying two sticks (including while taking a replacement stick to his goalkeeper) shall incur a minor penalty under this Rule but the automatic fine of two hundred dollars ($200) shall not be imposed. If his participation causes a foul resulting in a penalty, the Referee shall report the incident to the Commissioner for disciplinary action.

Permits player to carry two sticks, including a goal stick.

I'm still having trouble finding a direct reference to the original question but goal sticks obviously don't meet the requirements for a players stick and that alone would make it a penalty.

Still doesn't answer the original question of a D-man having only one stick, the goalie's and touching the puck with it.

Other than the obvious implications of above and the fact I've seen it called, I can't find a rule reference. Since I can't find explicit written proof that it must be called a penalty, I'm sure some of you won't accept it.

Not all of us are jerks. I can understand the 2 stick rule, but I just don't see any logical connection or inference as to how using the goalie's stick would play out.

Is it one of those cases that it isn't clearly stated and might be called (or not called) due to referee interpretation or discretion?

The only discretion is if it hits the player and he had his back to the play and had no idea it was coming. It's most likely in the situation manual, like USAH or HC, as the rule book would become burdensome if all "what if" scenarios were placed within the text of the rule.

Its a penalty if a skater uses a goalies stick to play the puck. I remember a rangers game in maybe '98, Richter lost his stick and Ulf samuelson gave him his stick to use the puck was cleared out of the zone and samuelson went into the corner to pick Richters stick up... as he did that the puck came back in and ulf samuelson used the goalie stick to poke check the puck away and he got an illegal stick penalty

Now I can see that being used as the call. Good job remembering that.

It would be an illegal stick penalty, plain and simple. The defenseman used a stick illegal for a player other than the goalie to use.

He would have to use his hand if its in his defensive zone without a stick.

I've always wondered if its a penalty if you steal some other guys stick and use it. I know its been discussed on this board before though.

If the stick belonged to a player on the other team it would be holding the stick, a minor penalty.
