Ever looked *inside* your skates?

Here's a good one. Had a HS kid bring in his skates for new rivets. He hadn't worn them all summer and just took them out of his bag which was in his garage.

Before he gives them to me for repair he says "let me make sure they still fit" and proceeds to slip his foot in. They fit and I tell him to come back in a little while.

One of the guys starts to work on them and shouts out "that's F^%$ing disgusting"!! I look in the boot and there's a dead mouse. Now I'm not talking a cute furry little thing that just passed on, this thing was all rotten and mushy.

The kid didn't even feel it when he stuck his foot in there!!!

Now that last story deserves a few pictures.

So this kid basically stepped barefoot on a decomposed mouse. Nice, perfect just before lunch.

The question is, did he try BOTH skates on or maybe slip a foot into the non-mouse skate?

There was this goalie in Orlando - worst smelling skates ever. He would go barefoot and never dry them...he was a squirt at the time. One day I was sharpening his skates, and all of a sudden, felt queasy. I threw up in the dust tray.

Should've threw up in his skate....THAT would've taught him something.

I take my insoles out after every ice time and I have my skates on the shelf to dry, but one of my friends just leaves her stuff in her car. I guess she was driving and she was using her skate to hold things and the next practice she stuck her foot in and she started to scream.

Mmmm moldy fries and mayo.

I just about threw up because I was laughing so hard. She refused to put them on until someone "got it out." No one did until my brother, who helps out with our beginner team shook them until it all fell out.

It was so gross, yet increadibly amusing.

A few years back, my oldest son was playing Atom hockey. He had this teammate that constantly asked me to tie his skates for him since neither he nor his mother could get them how he liked them. We've all seen the parents that think you have to crank on the laces and get them absolutely as tight as possible.

Anyway, this player never took his gear out of his bag to dry. Besides stinking like hell, when I'd tie his laces I'd get this slimy feeling on my fingers because something was coming off the laces. It was nasty to the point where I'd have to wash my hands afterwards. This was definitely a kid that didn't have to pay for or work for his own gear.

I'll especially remember him getting a brand new pair of skates for Christmas that season, and not a cheap pair either. For a week or so, tying his skates was "normal" and I asked him if he planned on taking the new pair out of the bag to dry after using them. He said no, he was going to leave them in the bag and get them nasty too! His mom heard this, smiled, and said "_____ just doesn't take gear out of his bag at home" I finished tying, left the room, and just shook my head in semi-disgust.

right now my gear is sitting on my floor with a fan blowing on it to dry it out... I'm freezing because it's cold and the fans on high but I'd rather be cold and have non-smelly gear then have anything like you guys have described. I don't know how people can do that to such expensive gear... not to mention putting that nasty gear on their body!

One of my old HS teammates comes into the shop to get his skates done, there is mold growing in his skate. Never takes his stuff out of the bag either. I straight up told him Im not doing his skates no more because the smell is awful.

Not a skate story but, I know of a bantam kid who got a small cut from a plastic panel on his shoulder pads. He spent 3 days in the hospital with a major staph infection. I guess it could have killed him if it hadn't been treated. Kinda scary huh?

I always wear the drifit or underarmour under my gear. I don't care HOW hot the rink is, but I have really sensative skin and my immune system isn't up to par after I was really sick when I was 18. I wash them after EVERY game except for tournaments where I nring two pairs and rinse them out after the games.

Staph is scary and I would rather not have my gear touch me.

That happened to a Leaf player a couple years ago...the Leaf fans could tell you more...but I think it was Renberg. Their gear is dried and taken pretty good care of, and it can happen.

A few years ago I had some rollerblades (recreational ones for skating around our neighborhood, not for roller hockey) that I just kept out in the garage. I went to put them on after about a year of not skating, but as I was putting one on my foot hit something in the toe of the skate. I banged the skate on the ground to get whatever it was out of the toe, and into the heel of my skate fell an old sock and a dead mouse curled up in it. I got rid of those skates, and since then none of my sports gear lives in the garage.

So, I also had a dead mouse, but at least I noticed it was there *shudder*

I take my insoles out after every game and practice. I know a guy who skated barefoot- he told my team never to do it. He had done it with his last pair of skates and they had gotten moldy. Needless to say after he got a new pair of skates he kept socks on.
