Blacking out sticks

Recommended Posts

a sanding block really doesn't work that well on concave shafts; or even regular shaped shafts for that matter

a power orbital sander however is great

anything higher than 200 should be fine; finish with 40 or lower for a smooth finish

and get ready for a lot of fine dust, it gets everywhere

I'm so glad that messageboards weren't around when I started painting sticks. If they were I feel like I'd be stuck doing more than buying a can of spray paint and spraying my stick.

If anyone is really worried about how it will come out, I suggest you experiment w/ an older stick that you wont care if it's 'ruined'.

:D I was thinking the same thing.

Honestly, why does anyone even bother sanding their stick?? The spraypaint sticks right to the shaft.

x2. I tried painting the yellow stripe on my one95 and just painting it worked fine, no prep at all.

I picked up vapor xxx for $90.00 and completely sanded it except for the small bauer logo on top because i thought it was to gripy. It looks cool and feels lighter but it is very slippery, too slippery so i taped the shaft candykane style. I have a vapor xxxx and lightly sanded it and painted the bottom of it. Paint chips and needs to be done over and over, hard to cover graphics even with light sand and will come of on gloves. Sanding takes ALONG time and alot of EFFORT, but never chips. All sticks black composite under paint.

Top stick is an SE grip with normal spray paint after a good amount of time. It's been standing up just fine for me.

Bottom stick is a Sergei Zubov ST/SE with whatever the hell has been done to it. Z-tac finish, some really thick paint, lots of sanding and the blade's been chiseled down where it necks into the shaft, as well as thinning on the whole perimeter. I think this came from cougarscaptain87 by way of Drewhunz, but I really have no idea how it got to be like this.

easiest thing by a long shot is to use a big thick black permanent marker. Nice, dark finish. A lot less messy than spray paint, a lot easer; makes touch ups very easy too... A $2 marker will last you pretty much forever..

when sanding use a low course grit first, ie 40,60, 80. then move up to 120 or 150, followed by 220. and your stick will be as smooth as a baby's but. when sanding ALWAYS start with a lower grit and work your way up to the higher number. the lower the grit the more material is removed and the higher grits are used for the final finish.

but in reality all you need to do is tape off where you want the paint to stop and then paint followed by a clear coat. some sort of polyurthene. but you will have to touch it up from time to time.

I wouldn't recommend taping it off. I personally think it looks alot better with a faded look then a straight line where it stops. I guess it's PP though.
