to girdle or not to girdle?

Recommended Posts

Hello- I have played roller all my life and looking to play ICE-

Friends told me I should get a girdle instead of typical pants.

I looked into the girdle and looks like a great option- what are peoples thoughts (what do u use)?

Also what girdle do you recommend?

Thing that I dont like is that I also have to by the shell that costs like $40

Thanks

I just cut off a pair of warm up pants at the knees. I have the only hockey pants in town with pockets.

to actually help....

Girdles are the best if you are looking for a pad that allows for full movement. I use a Tackla girdle because I am the type of player who uses agility over power.

My Linemate uses pants because he is a power forward. They allow for more padding and tend to be bulkier.

Girdles:

1. Tackla

2. Bauer

Pants:

1. RBk

2. Easton

3. Graf

In conclusion, it really depends on the type of player you are.

about the shell, either look on Ebay or search internet sites for discounts. My shell was Nike/Bauer plain black, and only like 20$ US

Wrong. In conclusion, it's what feels comfortable to you. Girdles are less protective because the pads shift inside the elastic. Not to mention pants are so light these days that the difference in weight/mobility is negligible.

definitely go with the girdle + shell. i personally find it a lot more flexible and easier to move in.

brands, i cant really guide you in any direction. i have a used franklin THT that ive been using for probably two years and i think its great.

I've went from pants to an inline girdle + tackla shell this year. I play non-contact, so I'm more worried about pucks and myself falling over, than hip checks and low hits - it works for me.

I also wear a girdle. Used to wear hockey pants. Had a bauer girdle, switche d to an easton. I prefer the easton, more comfortable. I wear very large black workout shorts over the girdle. No one can tell the difference. the benefits of the gym shorts over the covers is that i like the pockets for my mouth guard and there is an elastic waist.

If you're spending THAT much on a girdle, you can pick up lower end ICE pants with equivelant protection (and no shell need). Ill give you the Itech 1000 as the example.

If you're dead set on a girdle and you're NOT worried about incoming shots at the pelvis / high thighs, The Mission girdles from 2005/2006 or even the GEAR girdles at Giant are probably enough.

I've taken TWO pucks now to the place where hip joins pelvis and I have UPGRADED my ice pants to a heavier, more protective model (with more dense foams)

I have been wearing a girdle playing on ice since I was 18...I am 34 now....so I guess I would feel comfortable talking about girdles. There are still a good amount of choices left, and now Bauer has the One90 girdle coming out in the next 3-4 months. As far as what is available now, I still feel the best girdle out on the market for weight and protection is the Tackla 4000. I personally use the Easton girdle, and I like it a lot. It is very light and offers very good protection for my semi-contact league. With the girdles you are looking at price-wise, I would take a serious look at the Tacklas.....but be sure to try on a girdle first before you buy it. They all fit and feel different.

I play in a full contact league and I use the Easton Stealth S5 pants. I have had no problems and recomend these. They have great mobillity and great protection combined.

I play in a local beer league and wear a cheap ($19 at Hockey Giant) Gear inline girdle under sweats and love it. They are extremely light and give all the protction you need for non-check rec hockey.

About wearing a shell...

I play roller, and am looking to switch to ice (for a while now, just have to get off my ass and do it). I'm a goalie, too. No goalies really wear shells, even though they come with the jersey package. Is it just because we're goalies, or we play roller?

lundqvist wore a shell over his ranger pants at the olympics last year.

Shells are usually used for girdles, or if a player has pants that don't match a team's color scheme. as far as I know, there arent any goalie girdles out there.

If you fall on your ass, neither one is going to offer any protection.

I can attest to that, at least as far as the CCM is concerned. It took a while, but I landed on the right spot a couple weeks ago, and let's just say my tailbone hates me right now. Not too much protection in the tushy. Which is why I'm looking at some traditional pants.

I'll be playing no contact, rec league hockey in the spring - and I'm going with a Mission inline girdle with a shell. When I go back to playing mens league in the fall, I'll switch back to my traditional CCM pants.

As someone else pointed out, it's what you feel comfortable in. If you take a puck to the hip, thighs, or back of thigh and it hurts, you'll know you need more protection. There's no rule of thumb, it's all based on your individual experiences.

Gardening Gloves.. Are you kidding me?!? LOL.

I really really like my Bauer MBP8. I tryed switching back to normal pants. I couldn't do it, I feel like I have more mobility with the the girdle. It's a little weird at first, feels like you having nothing on.

Word of caution with the MBP8 Sizing, In my experiences they run slightly small. It's the only pair of pants where I wear a medium because the waist size is smaller then the typical medium pants.

Just get a pair of low end pants...same, if not, more protection than a girdle and it's just as mobile too.

Honestly for me there's no difference between my CCM pro girdle and my M-2.

I played dekhockey with batting gloves for about 4 seasons.... I can't even tell you how many whacks I took on the hands before I used my old lacrosse gloves (minus the cuffs).

As far as pants goes, comfort is priority... which is why I ended up in the CCM girdle. But I'll agree with Chadd, one slip backwards onto your kaboose, and you really feel it. It does happen too, no matter how experienced you are.
