going to a penguins game

Recommended Posts

My dad's taking me to Pittsburgh for the game on Sunday against Philly, and I'm trying to get the most out of the trip...it will be my first time seeing a game outside of Joe Louis Arena. Anybody got any tips for what time to get to the arena, what there is to do, sights to see, that sort of thing? I'd really like to get to watch them practice in the morning, if they do

Not really much to do in; If your into science, check out the Science Center down by Heinz Field it's pretty cool. Food at the arena sucks so be warned. All Pens practices are closed to the public unless it's out at Southpointe if I recall.

Doors open an hour before game time. I second the fact that the food sucks!

Other than that, I would suggest a trip up to Mt. Washington and a ride on the incline.

If you like microbrews I suggest going to the Church Brew Works. Great atmosphere and the food has an upscale Pittsburgh flair that won’t break the bank.

There are some cool museums as well.

As was said, you guys need to go to Primanti Bros. for a sandwich. Church Brew Works is good but I like Penn Brewery better, great German food. The science center is ok, I like the history center better. Eide's Comics is near the Strip District and has one of the best music sections in the city, especially if you like hard to find stuff (small label punk, metal, etc). Check out Mt. Washington, maybe ride the incline to the top. Station Square is ok, parking sucks and mostly chain stores/bars/restaurants, not uniquely Pittsburgh.

Primanti sandwiches suck, it's utterly disgusting that people actually eat those things. The Church brew works is kinda cool an there are a couple decent places to eat around the arena if you know where to go (assuming they're still around).

Don't like your fries and slaw on your sandwich eh? Primanti sandwiches are an acquired taste, the 1st time I went to get one I was turned off by it. But then I fell in love with them and every time I'm in Pittsburgh visiting the family, I have to get at least one. If they had one in NYC, I would be all over it hahaha

Heroin is an acquired taste but I avoid that too.

So Chadd, I can safely assume that you don't like scrapple, Islay's chipped ham sandwiches, or Coney Island's sundowners huh?

I ate scrapple when I was a kid, not anymore. Once I figured out what it was, I was off that stuff pretty damn quick.

I went to a Ranger Penguin game earlier in the season @ the igloo. The main point of the trip was to visit a girl I went to college with who had moved back home. The Penguin Ranger game was just good timing. The city isn't much fun to tell you the truth. The food is mediocre and the nightlife is pretty much non-existant. I was with someone who knew the city, so that was a plus. We stayed at the Hilton. We did have a wonderfull meal at a resturant I do not recall, I will try to contact my friend, and I will post the name of the resturant. The Arena is... old. Many people say it is the worst in hockey, but I disagree, the CAA in NJ is by far the worst arena... or maybe I am just biased.

I haven't been to the CAA in a couple years but the Igloo is a real dump. I was sitting in the stands watching the Fantasy Camp games when I was down their and I felt something hit my foot a few times, I look down and it's a freaking rat. And a decent sized one at that.

There is some nightlife in Pittsburgh but you gotta know where to find it. The Strip district has a lot of cool bars/clubs and stuff.

I still say the lower F seats in the igloo were some of the best in all of hockey before they put up the fishnets.

Eides is a must if you are into music or comic books!

If you think the food is mediocre, your friend doesn't know the city. Lots of restaurants with Wine Spectator award-winning wine lists. All of the Big Burrito restaurant group restaurants are top notch, including having a James Beard Award-winning chef. Plenty of smaller ethnic places as well. There are enough bars and clubs to visit for weeks without hitting them all.

Ok... compared to New York, the food is weak. The night we did go out and have a proper meal, it was fantastic. But I am talking the average bar or pub food was just crap.

Compared to NYC and Chicago and Miami, most places are a little lacking, depends on where you go.

primanti bros. isn't my thing and i live here... my favorite uniquely pittsburgh eatery is by far the original hot dog shop or the Dirty O, which is in oakland... for fine dining, nine on ninth is a new restaurant that's pretty close to the arena that i would recommend. for steaks you cant go wrong with ruth's chris or mortons. there are tons of other great restaurants depending on what you're looking for and where you can get to... nightlife i dont think pittsburgh has much of an issue either. the south side is great for the college kids, town tavern is the place there. strip district is better for the clubs and such, deja vu is my recommendation. obviously pittsburgh cant compete with a city like new york, we dont have 7 million people. the quantity isn't there but there's plenty of quality if you know where to go.
