I had one, worst car I ever owned. Tons of electrical problems.

Thats the Germans for you. Great cars if you're going to lease or buy a new one every couple of years, but terrible to maintain over a long period of time.

You think the Germans are bad? Buy an Italian car and you will be wishing you had the reliablity of a German car.

They're not half as bad as every says. I have a friend who has over 40,000 all condition miles on his Ferrari without ever doing the required scheduled maintenance. The car is beat on every day it is taken out, and just keeps running better and better. I also have a family member with a Challenge Stradale, and it is nothing but a pleasure to drive. We put over 14k(23k total) on it this past year, and havent had a single problem. Just like every other car, you take car of it and it will run right.

So not doing scheduled maintenance is taking care of it? I had an Italian car and it was a fantastic car but a lot of crap did go wrong.

23k miles and it's still running.... Incredible!

I got a 95 GTI VR6, The car ran flawless for the first year, then because they decided to make a internal timing chain that wears out, I had to pull the motor and fix it, however I did it my self, and even tho I have limited auto experience and i'm only 19 years old, me and a few school buddies pulled the motor, put it back in, and it runs great now, the cars are a blast to drive and if you just do basic work to it they will last a long time.

To get back on topic, my sister has owned a Turbo Passat and a Turbo A4. She had many problems with the Passat. Everything from the CC to the windows not working, to the lights failing, etc. Many electrical problems. The A4 has been better, but she has had random chunks of the undercarrige fall off. I hate to admit this, but the best car I have owned was from that little isle of Japan. I put 70k miles on the car and changedf the oil 3x TOPS. I put that car through everything and it was always there with a smile on its face.

Sounds like it might last all the way to 80k miles

Wife's car is a 2000 Passat 4motion. Good car, great bad weather car and a nice road trip vehicle. Lousy expensive to fix though. All major repairs have had to be done at the dealer or an import specialist repair shop because of specialized tools. And their hourly rates are $100+ an hour.

It will need a timing belt this summer and I might just have to bite the bullet and do it myself. Especially after $2K quote from the dealer... $2K on a $8K car is tough to swallow.

He bought the car last year and put 14k on it. I'd say thats pretty damn impressive out of a car thats not even close to being a daily driver.
