Player Equipment Bags

Okay, so the tiny (30x14x14) duffel I've been using as my gear bag has finally burst its final seam, and can no longer be held together with duct tape and twine, which makes it time to buy a new bag. This time, for variety, I think I'll actually buy a bag designed for hockey gear. :P

Anyway, I'm not looking to spend a fortune ($50 or less), and it has to fit in my car's trunk, so it can't be larger than about 40"x18"x18".

I'd like to have separate skate pockets, good ventilation, and it needs to be durable; I don't want to have to buy another one any time soon, because buying bags is so much less fun than new sticks or skates. :D

Right now I'm leaning towards either the Warrior Dolomite bag (38x16x16) or the RBK 5k (40x18x16). Given that I can fit everything (sort of) in my current bag, either should be big enough for my gear. The RBK has end handles, which are convenient for hoisting it into and out of the trunk, but other than that they seem pretty comparable.

Does anyone have opinions about either bag, or any other bags in that size/price range I should consider? I couldn't find any topics about bags using the search, unfortunately.

Buy whatever they have at the Chap pro shop. We have to keep those guys in business!! :D

Heh. I'm going to check out what they have Friday before my next game, but I like researching things before I make decisions like that. :)

I just got a RBK 5K bag last week for $41 or so. I like it a lot, so far. It has nice space and skate compartments. Has a shoulder strap, although I prefer sticking my arm through the handles. Seemed as good as any other bag I looked at without wheels. It seems well made, looks good, and was a good price.

^^ the shockdoctor bag is more than he's willing to spend and is bigger than he wants.

Personally I use and love the ewh bag by fury, but it might be too big for you.

Yeah, between those two bags, i would definitely go for the Warrior backpack. It's a great bag, it has vents, skate pockets, lots of room for such a small space, plus theyre inexpensive and look really nice. Also, you can wash them just like your gear so that doesn't smell either.

theirs a shock doctor bag that drys your stuff

Yeah, a couple of my teammates just got them. But it's way more than I want to spend and it won't fit in my trunk, so won't work for me. :)

How big is the side pocket? Will it hold more than a roll of tape, a wallet, and my watch/glasses? Basically, I'd like a separate pocket to hold my undershirt, socks, etc (ideally including my practice jerseys, but that might be pushing it).

I got an Easton backpack bag. Holds everything and makes walking thru doors and past a mass of hockey players waiting to get on the ice easy!

Interesting; I hadn't considered a backpack bag. Does it have as much space as a shoulder bag? I'm pretty cramped in my current bag, it's hard to imagine a backpack having enough space for all my gear without looking like I'm heading off to climb Everest.

I should also note: I don't want (as in won't use, but they could be on the bag) wheels, and I do want a nice shoulder strap, as that's how I carry my bag 90% of the time.

with a 40" bag, you wont fit through a door, unless you go side ways...

i try to go as short as possible on the length.. you gotta be able to fit through the door of your house with out marking up the door and side walls.

the one bag i had with skate pockets, got ripped up pretty easy.. and forget travelling with them.. bags with outside pockets get all hacked up by airlines..

I can't really fit through doors with my existing (30") bag anyway; maybe I'm just uncoordinated. :D

40" was the max I can deal with; shorter (as long as it's longer than my existing 30") is acceptable.

I only play rec hockey, so traveling isn't very important. I've never had a problem with my skates ripping the skate pockets, but then if they're in the bag they always have skate guards on them. (I take them out and remove the guards to let them air out as soon as I get home.)

Umm.... The Easton backpack bag is 29" wide, 17" deep, 33" tall.

The 33" sits up and down, not sideways. I only have to get 29" thru the door.

That was my problem, my stuff stays in a 3rd floor loft, 28 stairs to ground level and many marks on the walls with my old conventional bag!

LOL.. I think I look like that! It's pretty big as backpacks in general go.

I had an old black Easton Pro something or other and my backpack holds everything just as well. If you carry too much extra gear it might be pushing it. I just take a full set of gear and an extra jersey and some water bottles and it is fine.

My hockey gear stays in the garage, so I don't have that problem; the only doors it ever needs to fit through are the door into the rink and the door into the locker room. ;)

Yeah, I looked at the Easton backpacks on epuck and I like the way they look; they seem pretty big, but then they'd have to be. I am kind of interested in those, after looking at them--I'll have to see if my LHS has any.

The 5K side pocket is probably big enough for a jersey and socks, but it has no real vents if that matters. I have three big rolls of tape and a screw driver in mine. It is about the full length of the bag and opens 2-3 inches out.

There's a few that I like for under $30. Synergy, Vector, and Supreme. If you really got a small car, try finding a NBH small car bag, but it doesn't have the skate pockets.

It's not so much that it's a small car (mid-size sedan), it's just that I don't want the whole trunk to be taken up by a bag. I need to fit other stuff in (stroller, random junk, etc) as well. 40x18x18 is less than half the trunk, which seems about right to me.

I hate the look of the Supreme, and I think I read in that other thread that the CCM non-pro bags aren't very durable. The other one might work though.

You should get an MSH bag.

Are there such things?

Vents don't matter; like I said, I air everything out to dry immediately after every use.

I use and thoroughly back the Supreme bag. Is looks in a bag really that important? It has everything you listed in your needs, won't break bank, and is very durable and fits everything in it.

It's not that it's so important; if my choice was between the Supreme and another bag that was more expensive or not durable enough, I'd pick the Supreme. But if I can get a bag that's the same price and just as durable, but that I like the looks of better, why shouldn't I get that one instead?

I use a CCM 1152 bag, got it for about $35 or so maybe 8 months back.

It has skate pockets with little metal circular vents on them, though I don't know how good they are, as I usually turf everything into the bag itself when I'm done.

It's plenty big, I am a big guy so all my stuff is sized XL, and it holds it all fine for me.

It also has end pockets and another smaller pocket between the skate pocket I use for holding tape and such.

So far it has held up well, no tears or bust zippers.

The side pockets are big on it too, I have 3 pairs of socks 3 or 4 practice jerseys and things like, so loads of room.

I give it 2 thumbs up and a very nice

I know you won't like the looks, but I use the Supreme Classic Gold bag that I bought at Chaparral. It's definitely roomy and has two good sized end pockets plus skate pockets on the front. It also has a good sized shoulder strap and two big handles (which I use over my shoulder instead of the shoulder strap). I've been using it a year now and it's held up great.

I can squeeze it into the trunk of my BMW 325 convertible, which if you've seen them, doesn't have much at all for a trunk. I think the biggest factor of whether a bag is too big or not is how much you stuff inside. I can only fit my bag into my car because it's not packed completely full so there is lots of soft corners to cram into the trunk.

Or you could go for the Supreme 'Team' bag instead: http://hockey.lax.com/item.phtml?page=prod...675_front.phtml

The black/green and burgundy/gray ones aren't completely awful, I guess. ;)

For that price I might need a Maize and Blue bag! (navy and gold according to the site).

A buddy has a Bauer Supreme Classic bag that appears very similar to what these are. It's a pretty good sized bag, and totally flexible so you can likely cram it into your trunk.
