PS3

Recommended Posts

this question might be fairly easy to answer, but are there any differences in the PS3 console across the globe? a friend will be traveling europe for the majority of the summer, and is able to get electronics (PS3) cheaper than here, but i'm not sure if the console is the same as the north american counterpart. the power outlet plug would most likely be different, but aside from that, is it worth it to get one cheaper from europe, or to pay the extra cash for a north american version?

I believe that they used a different chip in the Euro PS3's which does not allow much playback of previous playstation games. Its also more expensive in European countries than the US, but Japan is a different story. Its around $50 cheaper there if i remember correctly.

European PS3s are "PAL" as opposed to "NTSC" (NA region PS3s) Plugs will be different, and PAL PS3's cannot play american NTSC games without a mod-chip, which with installation will likely offset the cost difference.

All in all, tell him to buy an Xbox 360 instead. Equivalent graphical capabilities, controller thats actually built for a man's hands, xbox live, and all the PS3 exclusives are slowly migrating to 360 anyway.

while i do love the 360, i'm a diehard sony fan. plus, i don't want all my old psx and ps2 games to be dumped in the closet, as i still enjoy them a lot, and my ps2 is seriously on its last breath of life, so that can't be used to play them anymore.

Not true, the PS3 has greater graphical capabilities.

Go play Gears of War and then tell me that. Also, give me one piece of information to refute studies that have shown that while they have different graphic processing mechanisms, the actual output of both systems is more or less equal. Once Metal Gear 4 is inevitably announced for 360 I will have no reason to ever play PS3.

I didn't say the PS3's games look a lot better or anything like that. All I said was the PS3 has greater graphical capabilities, and it does.

Yea but nothing is using it's full capabilities and prob won't for a while. Even when games do, prob not gonna notice it that much. I mean, PS2 and it's new games are pretty decent graphics-wise still.

I honestly took my PS3 in for a return. I bought it, thought bout selling it but that was stupid since I'd lose money, and figured I'd use the money on another system+games.

Is lighting not considered within the entire graphics package? I mean 95% of the games I play are in the sports genre so my subjective opinion is pretty much moot anyway.

By "graphics" i meant that the models, textures, movements, etc. aren't above and beyond most games. The lighting is, however.

Killzone 2, if it ever comes out, will show everyone what the PS3 is capable of.

.........pretty games that play like dog crap? The first killzone sucked, what makes you think this one will experience miraculous improvement when none of the current videos are gameplay footage.
