Maybe his debut at practice...but he won't play until Thurs

http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=201697&hubname=

(although Thurs is Mar 29th....not Apr 3rd as this story states?)

Five days later, in what will be just his third NHL game, Johnson returns to Vancouver, where fans still remember the elbow he laid on the head of Canadian forward Steve Downie at the 2006 world junior championship.

The Vancouver game is April 3rd - that's what they mean when they say "Jack Johnson knows April 3rd is coming"

This is one trade that Carolina will live to regret!! They could really use him next year!

They could also really use him for the playoffs, and they could really use him ten years from now. Stupid trade.

Rumour has it he felt pressed by Carolina's GM and threatened to not play until his 4 years were up unless he was traded. That said, he got nothing in return.

That's pretty much it. He was pressured to come out early, then felt he was lowballed (wasn't offered rookie max of entry level deal). At that stage he told the canes he was playing out his eligibility and would not sign as a cane.

They had no choice but to trade him

With Carolina's injury situation going into the season, they needed defense and center help. The trade addressed both of those needs without giving up a regular roster player. Add to that the feeling that Johnson didn't seem too eager to sign with Carolina and it all makes sense.

Terrible return? Both Belanger and Gleason played well for the 'Canes this year and they turned Belanger over for Vasicek, whom Carolina has always liked. Sorry, Jack Johnson is no Eric Lindros.

Wow the Canes must be cursing to no end when they heard this. Wouldn't they love it, if right now while they're fighting for that last couple playoff spots, to have him join up with them instead of the Kings. Worst job by a GM since Mike Milbury

Jack Johnson has Scott Steven's type potential.

And that has what exactly to do with Carolina filling their blueline and forward needs to start the season? You said it yourself, 'potential', he could become a number 1 defenseman down the road but Carolina needed something that day.

And they should've filled those needs via UFA and waited on JJ or shopped him until they got a better value.

He was their asset, they didn't get nearly enough back to justify his potential. By your logic every prospect is worthless as long as they are traded for something that fills a need. If a team needs a 6th D-man for a playoff run they should trade their best prospect for him.

They got Gleason as an offensive D-man, but he hasn't provided that and they also gave up Tverdovsky.

Gleason was hardly supposed to be an offensive defenseman. Carolina needed forward and defense help. With Kaberle and Stillman both being down for significant time from camp on they needed players that they couldn't find on the UFA market that had already been picked pretty clean.

Tverdovsky, a player I have always liked, has been plying his trade in Manchester for the past month or two.

Its highly unlikely either Johnson or Cammalleri are graduates from Michigan. It will be interesting to see how Johnson's dirty plays and cheap shots translate to the NHL game.

He was supposed to help them offensively. Tvo may not be a terrific D-man, but he could've played on their D-core, which is weak. They needed help, but players will available via UFA, they didn't need to trade away arguably the best D-man prospect in the world.

I don't know about Cam, but Jack said he's going to finish school during his off time. I don't know how likely that will be though.

He might have been brought in to be an offensive Dman but hes played a role as defensive dman that the team has needed him to. Alot of Canes fans have high praise for him because hes turned into a shutdown guy for them.
