Playing Hookey

Recommended Posts

Do you guys take off work/school etc to hit the ice? Cutting off early this afternoon, taking kids out of school 1/2 hour early to go to stick & puck. Wife will be mad when she hears so in effect giving up Friday night sex for an hours ice time also. :(

My priorities out of whack....didn't even consider an invite to golf today instead-told them I had to work.

I love to hear about those kind of storyies.

Zam... love your sig!!

yep, I've taken my kid out of school to go to skills sessions - always feel a bit guilty about it... like the mum police are going to come cart me away or something. When it is with Dr. Smushkin, I tell the school she has "an appointment with the Dr."

I don't see it as any big deal. Kids spend way more time in school then they need to anyway. There's zero connection between long class schedules and the learning process. It's just state paid sponsered daycare to have kids in class 7+ hours a day. Pull 'em every day, the added exercise and reduced class schedules will more than likely improve their preformance in school.

At the school I'm going to next year (Pingree School) You get like an hour and a half break halfway through the day, and one of the things you can do is play hockey. So next year I'm going to hit the ice every day during school, and then after school ill have varsity practice.

I have ice sessions every Monday and Tuesday through my school, somtimes I ll miss a block to go to drop in hockey if I can get a ride and sometimes I'll just come home early to shoot pucks or whatever of course depending on who's home at the time

man, how i miss skipping class to play hockey. Didnt happen often, but it was a thrill.

I'd play hookey now, but no one at work would say anything. sort of an understanding in the company, since we sometime travel on weekends and work late when we need to. Anyway, hockey is mainly in the evenings here, so it doesnt really matter.

I wouldn't recommend skipping school as a path to the NHL, but it appears to have worked out in your case.

Your wife gives you sex? That's why I play hockey, let's me vent my pent up agression.

But being a fireman my schedule/buddies covering my shift is about as flexible as it comes. Only 1/3 of us work at any 1 time and if someone covers your shift or part thereof all you have to do is pay him back later. That equals instant time off for hockey, and if I can't find someone to cover I'll just burn 4-6 hours vacation. You can take the Canadian out of Canada but you can't take the Canada out of the Canadian.

I know a kid on that team..his name is matt something..he is pretty sick at defence..I think he is a junior or senior now.

Haha, I missed classes for sports all the time. When I was training for another sport I would come in at about 945 every morning and leave at about 215 (classes started at 9 and ended at 4).

My teachers were really understanding and as long as I finished my work they didnt care.

Of course I do. Monday to Friday after 4pm, ice costs $130-140 around here. Before 4pm it costs $70-80.

The rinks are empty during the work day, and it's so leisurely to have a pad to yourself for an hour. You work on whatever you like, at whatever pace you like. Its more like hanging out at the pond, except with great ice and lousy air.

My kid has always showed unmistakeable improvement after these sessions, (we just did it during tryouts to work on shooting) and I've now teamed up with another dad to split the ice and we're planning to do it once a week over the summer....of course that means the kids aren't "playing hookey".

During next season, we'll do it whenever something specific needs to be addressed. If my kid was having problems getting grades in school I might of a different mind on this.

After finding out about a buddy of mine at H school making it as a pro guitar player I now regret I didn't spend more time on my hockey skills as opposed to *wagging and hanging out with girls at the local shopping centre. Because everytime I was polishing up my "female communication skills" he was at home jamming away.

*Wagging is Aussie for Hookey.

Have to admit the sig isn't original hockeymom-I thought it really funny also. Was going to go with a classic hockey quote:

"Have another donut you fat pig"

Or a line told at my expense:

"He couldn't coach a Labrador retreiver into the water with a tennis ball"

Good to see I'm not alone in shirking responsibilities to hit the ice, we had great time last week-going to head out again this week.

I'll add that because of pick up games that start either ridiculously early or ridiculously late around here, I've had less of a reason to miss classes. However, I still had some lunchtimes free during the week.

On a side note, I'm really glad the semester's over. One more to go...
