"I say as the NHL has already turned into a circus with its officiating this year, lets take it one step further. The questionable calls, wrong calls, and poor officiating has made the league a joke. It is not only the refs faults, its rules like automatic delay of game penalties that make the league look more like Pro Beach Hockey.

As a fan I like to think that I can see EVERYTHING from my seats. I boo when LaRuhe DOES miss a blatant call. I chant 'these refs suck' when they make the wrong call (which they do, often). I seem to have a better view of the game than the refs. I say we move the refferes off the ice and into the stands. Keep the linesmen on the ice, but lets put the refs in the stands. One on each side of the ice. Why not? Maybe we can put a trapazoid around them, I know the league will support the geometrics of that at least. There must be something (most likely tied to physics) about being ten feet up and 80 feet away that gives you a better viewing angle than somebody @ ice level 10 feet away.

Keeping with the circus element I believe the NHL should also add a two point arch. This will add more goals, which OBVIOUSLY means more excitement to the game. The two point arch is currently trademarked by The PBH, but I am sure The Rangers will be willing to pick up the licensing money."

Obviously there would be some sort of on ice official for that to work, and remember Referees also need to help stop fights and send players to the penalty boxes, ok there are the lines men but when things start to get out of hand more then 2 guys are needed.

So when a player wants to complain about a call they have to look up and get a face full of lighting from the rafters?

better than screaming at Rob Shick and staring at his ugly mug.

the two point shot is not a good idea in my opion it takes less skill to score from there say if there was alot of traffic in front that it would to send someone in on a breakaway or set someone from behind the net

They should suspend the refs in harnesses 30' over the ice, controlled by remote control... kinda like those cameras on espn for football.

First good idea Ive heared in the thread. This will give them a great angle and allow them to see the entire surface. I think I will foward this thread to Bet Man or at least his sidekick.

and it will give moving targets for clearing attempts!

I am sure we can come up with some kind of automatic descretionless penalty for hitting a ref.

The problem is people in the stands only think they can see the penalty better then the guy on the ice. The reffing is bad, but its only bad because its inconsistant from one crew to another. Watch a game played by a team that you really don't give a shit about....you'll watch it and say umm yeah they missed some calls, but it wasn't too brutal, and then you watch a game by your favorite team and you get all bent out of shape. Thats how it always is.

As a ref myself (just locally) I can say that there are many times when an penalty could be called but my view is either obstructed by the other players on the ice or the two players involved. A ref can be in the perfect position and still not get a good look at an infraction. At that point he must decide which team he want to piss off. That is not an easy call. Other times the ref may miss a call because he is simply trying to not get killed by a couple of gorillas skating at him at full speed or a puck that takes an unexpected change of direction while flying through the air at 100mph.

We have a minor league pro team here in town and I have been to many games. The games are 3-man and quite often I get the impression that the league did not adopt the new, tighter standard of play. I work with a guy who has been doing lines for this league for 15 years and sometimes he even questions some of the calls/no calls but he always adds the caveat of it depends on the point of view/ position of the official to see the play.

Hockey is a very fast game and I respect any official who makes an effort to be in good position to make the right call. In my observations of the NHL games, I feel that more often than not, the correct call/no call will be made.

For those of you who have never been on the ice wearing the stripes, I feel you have very little room to argue since you have never been in that unique position. If you still feel compelled to complain, please check into becomming a referee so you can get a feel for how difficult the job can be.

As for those that are or have been referees in the past, I feel although you may not agree with the way a game is being called, i emplore you to empathize with an official who is working hard to maintain a good position to make the correct call even if he misses one or two.

Wait a second, we can kill two birds with one puck here! Combine the suspended refs idea with the two point idea... hit the ref and get two points!

Interesting. As I said before, this entire thread is being forwarded to the comish. I hope you all understand that your ideas will become property of The National Hockey League.

i dont think ive ever seen a ref break up a fight, even when all 10 guys on the ice are fighting..

Search google for Nordiques/Canadiens 4/20/84 Good Friday Massacre. You will see the most out-of-control bench brawl ever with the referees as well as the linesmen trying to stop this all-out war. This video makes Calgary/Detroit in the first round look like kids play.

As for arguing about the refereeing, the post about putting on the stripes is the truth. Until you put the whistle on your hand and skate to center ice to drop the puck, you really have no idea what its like to referee a hockey game. I put in 5 years with the stripes and something new happens every game.

IMHO it seems like fans in every sport are always bitching about the officials, doesn't matter if it's baseball, football, basketball, soccer, or whatever. It really has less to do with the officials and more to do with biased fans seeing (or not seeing) something and feeling snubbed because a call didn't go their way. It's simply irrational. Sure, the NHL could take some steps to improve the way games are called and I hope they do. In the end it wouldn't make any difference to irrational fans.

no offense guy, but I think Gary Bettman has a couple more important things to do with his time then read a thread on Modsquadhockey about the officiating of the game. I'd trust that Mr. Bettman realizes the refs are doing the best they can and that he would also do whatever possible to improve officiating.

WAAAA?!?!?!? You can't say that! Didn't you see the refs and the NHL SCREW the islanders and then the Rangers? The refs completely tilted the games Buffalo's way! Get out of here with your rational comments....... :P

I Youtubed the Massacre. Lots a of little fights all over the ice. Tough for the refs to break that up.

Who is the linesman "HODGES"? Isn't he a ref or something now?
