Sabre's Announcer

Recommended Posts

Pretty much all the home telecast announcers are like that. Make every goal seem like the greatest one ever to occur since hockey was created....must be part of the job description.

I think Joe Benanati calls the game great. He's the local caps guy, but has done a lot for Versus this season, and called the sens/pens and the sens/sabres series for Versus.

Although I may be biased, I just like his style

not the biggest fan of benanati, he seems to be very concerned with using ridiculous terms to describe whats going on and using his own obscure nicknames for things like the net, boards, glass and such

I guess that could grate on you, I am just used to it from seeing him call all the caps games here for the past 6 years

The worst things about the VS broadcasters is they do hardly any "play by play". They ramble on about the most pointless crap and occasionally get interupted when something overly exciting happens on the ice. At least broadcasters like Jeanneret call the game as its happening and save their story time for when nothing is going on.

I find Doc Emrick does a good job on the play by play. Although, occasionally my wife will come into the room wondering if the announcer is gonna die. He gets really really excited sometimes. But honestly, I like that...goals don't happen often, so if the announcers get overly excited, I think it works. Unless it's like a 6-1 game or something...but I don't recall any announcers that get excited over those goals.

I love Rick Jeanneret. He makes every game fun. For the casual fan (not me), watching hockey on TV maybe isn't the most exciting thing in the world for them. This guy makes it sound exciting, and has probably got a lot of casual fans interested in the game. I know a few people who say they'll never watch another hockey game on TV after Rick Jeanneret retires/has a heart attack.

Jeanneret is a great play by play guy. At school all I usually get are sabres games, and even though he is a homer, he is great to listen to. I love when announcers show huge enthusiasm in goals. His color man is brutal though. And he has 2 of the best lines ever:

"Tis the season, La la la la la la lafontaine"

"Stuuuuuuuuu Barnes!"

I can't stand Jeanneret...I have the unfortunate luck of having to hear his voice on MSG in Central NY on MSG. I can't miss any game on TV, so I have to stomach his ridiculous lack of knowledge of anything not Sabres. He is such a subjective announcer. Sabres fans love him...I can surely understand why. HE is just not my cup of tea...I like listening to games where the announcer is knowledgeable on both teams and is unbiased. Emerick is my favorite....followed by Benenati.

I don't mind when regional/team network announcers are a bit bias, but Jeanneret is such a homer than it REALLY effects the way he calls the game (in a bad way). There are nights when I can tolerate him, but he sometimes raves and rants (often in ignorance) so much that I have to mute the son of a bitch.

I think he's almost as bad as the pitsburg announcers. I cant stand the "scooooooooooooooooooooooooreeeeeeeeeeeeesss" It sounds like he's gonna get fired if he doesnt say it like that. But he still doesnt beat the pitsburg guy with the stupid dumbass metaphors especially when crosby scores.

Come on..for years when the sabres were a shitty team and even now when they go into a slump, Jeanneret and Lorenz will bash on them for playing like crap.

And besides hes a home town announcer, he's the sabres announcer so he should be biased towards the sabres. Thats what the team pays him for.

They pay him to call hockey games. His extreme nature of his biased views often keeps him from doing so accurately and effectively.

what exactly do you mean "extreamly biased views"?? Because he gets more excited when the team he is employed by scores then the other team?

or do you just dislike the sabres and therfore dislike the anouncer? Every time the sabres play like crap they call them out on it. You make it sound like he would be proclaiming how awesome the sabres are as they keep getting beaten by the florida panthers.....

Looks like the definition of bias to me.

As I said earlier - I don't mind if the guy is a bit biased; when a guy is working for a network with a strong affiliation to one team, that's to be expected...to a point. The fact of the matter is that the guy has adopted Buffalo's "inferiority complex" and he wears it on his sleeve. The whining and pissing and moaning that guy does in the broadcast booth is usually way too dramatic and is quite often unfounded.

I admire his enthusiasm, but that's all he has going for him as far as I'm concerned.

I'd say that is more of him doing his job. A biased announcer is somebody telling you how awesome his team is even though they suck, or refusing to acknowledge them sucking.

Lkpttiger: What the hell do you mean by "inferiority complex"? and seriously pissing and moaning? do you watch the games?

What do I mean? C'mon, man - I think everyone here knows exactly what I'm talking about.

Unfortunately, if I have a free night and there is a hockey game on TV, I'm compelled to watch. Living in the Western New York area means that, more often than not, that hockey game just so happens to be called by R.J. I wish I didn't have to watch, but I always do - it's part of being a fan of the game.

His job is to present what is going on on the ice to the viewers at home in a fair and unbiased way. ALL announcers, even the best of them, will have some bias to the organization tied to the checks they receive. He simply doesn't do a good job of overcoming that bias. Bias comes in more forms than just telling you that a shitty team is great. An unbiased person can watch/call the game without looking at jerseys or at the score and simply enjoy the game for what it is. S/he can appreciate the good plays and call out the bad plays for both squads, not concentrate solely on making one team look good.

Frankly, I don't see any of this getting through to you, because you have shown yourself to be heavily biased towards Buffalo in the past, and nothing got through to you then either.

edit: The announcer who refuses to admit his team sucks is the one looking to keep his job.
