waxing stick blades

Recommended Posts

Yeah no probs with Renfrew...I've switched to getting tape from a different store, think it's called Comp-O or Stick-O. It works well...but just doesn't come in the same width as the Renfrew and it's less tacky so it's easier to get off...but overall, bout the same.

TBL, could you just drop a disc into an envelope for me? I just wanted to try, I could Paypal you like $2 or something :P

Luckily for me, all the local stores carry Andover and Mr Zoggs :P

I tape the blade, rub the wax all over it, use a heat gun to melt into the tape. Usually lasts several games and I'll retape when it gets nasty looking or badly cut.

Up top, I make my knob, then I use Powerflex tape to wrap a few inches of grip, tape the bottom with a bit of blade tape so it doesn't roll up. I'll replace that whenever I do the blade. That stuff doesn't mess up my gloves as bad.

Wax on the handle will get all over your gloves.

that's nice to know Jimmy, thanks for the info. Here's my new comment; The renfrew tape that most places carry is crap. Actually, it's not soo much the glue as the cloth. Not only does the andover tape have better glue that refrew(blue) but the cloth also is of a better quality AND it doesn't have that issue of the one string of cloth coming off on all tape rolls(you guys have to know what I'm talking about).

sc37 - I wouldn't mind sending you some but I also don't want to lose any money on it. Paypal is going to take some money away and of course shipping will be like $1.50-2 to the US. I think that you'd be better off going through EWH(although you'd save like a dollar). But if you want me to ship you one, just pm me. It's no problem. :)

...getting back on topic. Another benefit of waxing your whole blade(where the tape is) and melting it into the tape is that the glue becomes very waxy. When the tape gets cut from a skate blade or whatever you can take your fingernail and pull out that cut and move it back where it was, essentially fixing the tape. It's very nice, because we all know that any other tape that gets a bad cut is done... waxed tape can go for another game if need be!

The last couple of rolls of Andover I've had had the edge string coming off like Renfrew. It's not quite as bad, but it's definitely not like the tape I had before. Anyone else notice that?

actually I noticed that too(it happened twice on my white roll but not once on my black roll). I thought it had something to do with the heat and humidity here, but I doubt it's nearly as hot up in MN... Maybe we have a bad batch? Luckily instead of continuing the tearing a ring of the outer thread just falls off... Still much better than renfrew.

Yeah it was the white rolls...just the most recent ones. The black one wasn't as bad but still noticeable. And it's still nowhere near as bad as Renfrew. I'll have to ask my roommate if he's got any of the old white rolls stashed away...

This is pretty much exactly what I do, except I dont use a knob on my stick, so I just use a layer of the powerflex tape on the handle. I also wax the handle so its grippy, but I melt the wax on the handle over the stove top so that the wax melts into the tape. I'll do a few "coats" of the wax on the handle and keep melting it and it works perfectly. No residue on my gloves (black palms, so ANY wax would show up if there was)

I think Hollister sells Sex Wax, at least they used to. I don't know why they do, but they do....its not like there is a lot of surfing going on in Saint Louis where I live.

Mr Zoggs sex wax comes in a few different types. There's a hockey specific type that I use(From what I have heard about surfing it's about the same as cold water surf wax"). It also smells really good.

Could you compare Mr Zogs Sex Wax, Blade Butter (or other Wax in Deoderant-Cans like Easton) and a normal candle? Is there a huge difference?

Ive never waxed my blades, i might start now, but i just can get my hands on candles at the moment, haha.

You'll be fine with just regular candles if you're just trying out. I've bought bags of tealights (little puck-shaped candles) and they work well enough. Wax, heat the tape up and melt it in and put a little more on if you want.

Thanks. I had a date last week so i got enough tealights here, haha.

Just to spend more money i dont have i got an idea. As far as i know there is a Surfshop in town. I hope its not closed, i will stop there when i drive to the rink. The cool version of Mr Zogs should be the same as the hockeywax, right?

As a general thing, mack, what do you think about this brown paperbag 'cohol thing? Everybody knows whats in it but no one shall see it. Ive been wondering for years..

i used to wax the crap outta my stick (no mack there was no actual crap in my stick o.O)

every game all the time.... but have since moved to blade tape

now no prep time for my sticks unless minor details are needed

but i use to use a wax called north american ice wax or something that came in a lil blue disc

nice and soft... but never heated any wax to put on the blade

you ppl are crazy ;)

Cold water Sex Wax seems to be a lot softer and stickier than their hockey wax. To me, it seemed like their hockey wax had the consistency of a warm water wax, which is kind of counter-intuitive when you think about it. But I suppose that when the wax's primary purpose is to seal the tape from water as opposed to adding traction, it doesn't really matter how sticky it is.

The last few skates I've taken to waxing my blade BEFORE applying tape. I retape after every game but get a lot of residue. Seems to help keep the tape from sticking to the blade too much.

I'd just order a half dozen Zogs waxes. Can't be more than $20 shipped and it'll last you a long time.

Jarick, how well does waxing the blade do to help prevent the tape residue on your blade. I hate that.

Tape comes off 100%, no residue, and it doesn't seem to come off too easily on the ice. I'm using Andover which has a lot more adhesive than Renfrew.
