Awful skate sharpening

Recommended Posts

I just got my skates sharpened and found there to be a small dip in the blade. Almost like the guy stopped or paused because it is very noticableeven to the eye. Would this be fixed by grinding it down until it is even again. How would the other skate be kept the same as the other one.

Just a re-sharpen should solve to problem depending on how deep the "dip" is.

He just didn't go the same speed throughout his passes/last pass, careless mistake.

If you can see a "dip" it may be more severe than one might think, depending where the dip is located on the runner. One or two sharpenings may get the runner level again, but it is possible the radius was altered, especially if that guy was a bad sharpener, and given the fact that he left a dip, what else did he potentially do.. Get them sharpened, then go skate and see how they feel. If Ok, then you escaped. If not, you may need to get the radius refreshed.

No offense to sharpeners, because I'm sure you guys know what you are doing, but this is why I have tblades, same thing happened to me once at a big tournament...I learned my lesson by not letting some random guy from Texas sharpen my skates

That's why if you found a great sharpner it's all good. Before every tourny I get them sharpened and don't have to worry about them the whole tournament. Plus, I still have the theory that if you go to a tourny, the sharpener fvcks up your skates so that you do bad. <_<

Same guy has been sharpening my skates for 20 years. Sometimes they may be a bit too sharp, but that's much easier to remedy than someone who thinks they know what their doing and does a bad job. Last week my guy was closed when I got home from work so I went some place else, the young guy who did my skates did a horrible job.

Can you see the "dip" without even running the light down the blade? If so then yes, it's a big dip and might have to resort to what jimmy said. But, if it's only minor, a sharpen will even out the blade.

I'd rather take the chance of getting one bad sharpening a year at a tournament instead of spending the cash to have those hidious pieces of plastic on the bottom of my feet.

Just my personal opinion though :D

Man... if anyone ever proves your theory true and messes up skates on purpose, they should meet the business end of JR's Lightspeed Shank!

Those ridges are from a dirty stone. It's bouncing on the blade. You can hear the difference between a clean stone and a dirty one... if you've been sharpening as long as I have.

isn't that the HockeyGiant sharpened skate pic?

I had mine cut at the Giant just once...actually wasn't THAT bad.

and that pic is ridiculous. I'm praying that wasn't a well-known shop.

What have we become?

Do we really expect that anyone that stands within 20 feet of a skate sharpener to be an expert?

Everyone has to start somewhere. Sorry it happened to you.

Is it drive, spirit and skill that makes a hockey player, or focus on a skate sharpening?

If you can do a better job, why do you have other people do it for you?

Did we ever stop to think that the skate was sharpened by someone without experience?

Eventually, the guy that's been doing them for 400 years is going to die...

Instead of bitching about it on the internet, don't you think there's a courteous way of handling it so that the new guy learns how to do it right?

You might find that the "shitty" sharpener is capable of doing great work when they get more support and less scrutiny!

P.S. A poor musician, always blames his instrument.

No, what we do expect is people in the "business" of skate sharpening to do a decent job. If they can't do that, then they shouldn't be offering it in their store. True, everyone starts out as a beginner, but the place for beginners is not on customers skates. How about a little training, or better yet lots of practice, before sharpening customers skates. That's not too much to ask. I certainly don't want my doctor operating on me until he's done it on a cadaver a few times!

And speck, you couldn't be more wrong, a proper skate sharpening makes all the difference in how one plays, drive and spirit just can't overcome a horendous sharpening.

When I got tired of bad skate sharpening, I sent my skates back home to have my friend do them. That soon became impractical so I bought my own sharpener. Now when my skates don't feel right I just blame my cat.
