old school shoulder pads

Recommended Posts

If anybody's tried both of these pads, how do they compare to one another?

Are there any other similar style pads on the market right now?

edit:

I was considering buying these when I heard that this latest model year's version is slightly different than the previous one. Specifically, the later one has more padding. Has anybody seen both versions? Would you be able to go into more detail comparing the two?

Easton had a "Classic" which was pretty much the same. I haven't worn the DR's, but i know that once you wear them once, the 5030's will feel like you have worn them forever.

I think the DR's have a nicer fit, then again, I still wear my Vic's from 1986.

The first year "1600 series" were much better than the "1650 series" for DR. The newer model is cut in a way that doesn't fit as well for most people.

As for what model is better, I used to sell the DRs but I never bought a pair. I use the 5030.

I don't think the Easton's are readily available any longer.

The Itech SP50s are minimalist, but they look to be quite different from these others. I've heard that the Sher-Woods still provide some surprisingly adequate amount of protection, but I haven't really heard the same about the Itechs.

Is there any difference between the 5030s with the "The Original" graphic on it and the older version without that graphic?

I remember trying on the SP50's and the 5030's back to back. The SP50's has almost no protection and didn't actually fit all that well. They were sliding around or twisting. I remember thinking that if the 5030's were more than I wanted, I wouldn't even bother with shoulders as the SP50's would just get in the way.

I've been using the 5030's for several months now and love them, wouldn't think of switching. Lightweight and plenty of air movement.

Anyone ever try those itech minimalists? What's doing?

I have them and love them. They are really light and mobile and fit me really well.

The 5030's are amazing. Hardly feel like you are wearing anything at all. If you league requires shoulder pads and you hate wearing them, then these are best option for you and very protective on the shoulders as well.

how are the 5030's if you were to take a shot to the chest? since i play defense, that's the only thing i'm really worried about...i really like the lightness but i know that i may lose a little in protection. or maybe more than a little with these old school pads.

You don't want to get hit with a slapper in the chest. If things like that happen to you, get shoulder pads with some plastic inserts to absorb the impact.

I love me my 5030s. Wish I rocked these back in HS. I wouldn't consider any other pad (provided we're talking noncontact beer league). Even if I did play contact league, I'd still consider the 5030s.

i wear the 5030s, love em, actually cut out some of the padding, i guess its from the body, but its under the shoulder caps, and i had the shoe repair sew the caps down better and re-enforce some of the binding material. pretty soon i shall have a chest guard sewn on as well, will post pics when finished

I know these aren't old school but has anyone tried the Farrell's? They are light, not bulky, and have free movement. The big difference over the 5030's is they have superior protection. I find people would like the protection, but still want low profile and maneuverability. I think the Farrells give both. Pricey though.

I'm not a fan of the Farrells for a number of reasons.

Chadd, do tell. I'm not real familiar with them, other than they are used for football as well. Onlty reason I brought them up is that they look minimalistic and have a low profile, first thing I though was they's be popular with the beer leaguers.

I've beat on them a few times and even had Farrell IM me a couple times so I'd rather not go into it again. He claims they are planning to make some changes that address some of my concerns, they were going to do so even before my comments.

That's the reason i switched from my 5030's to CCM 652's. I play defence and got sick and tired of allways having bruised ribs, due to blocking shots with my chest. However i couldn't stand the bulkyness of the ccm shoulder caps, so i took the caps off and replaced them with the caps of the 5030's..

I went from 652s to 5030s, and yeah, the OG 652 caps are stupid big. Post pics of the frankensteined 652 pads!

The 5030's are great. I've used the 5030s for two college seasons. Light and comfortable. I have gotten hit with shots in the chest and stomach and I've been fine. You often trade off protection to use lighter equipment and have more mobility....and a slapshot to the chest is going to hurt regardless of what shoulderpads you are wearing.
