Yeah nobody on the west coast read this retard's thread unless you want to be spoiled, though I agree with some of what he said.

maybe the wanted to leave their options open for possibly something else in the future. or maybe instead of killing tony like everyone has been saying will happen, they just decided to leave it up to the viewer to decide what they think happened. i don't know but that episode/ending sucked.

Either they're dead-set on a movie or they just wanted to leave it in the state Tony was in, indictments, paranoia, etc., etc.

Umm, I hate to break it to you but Tony did die, hence the cut music and fade to black.

If you've followed the show, there were numerous references to "How it feels when you go?" It was usually responded by saying, "You don't hear anything."

I believe the ending was the writers' way of showing that Tony was shot, didn't hear anything, and everthing just stopped/ended. And it also mean the show just stopped/ended.

I thought it was quite good actually. Not the whole show, but the ending. I mean, I guess I would I would have liked a happy ending, but we can't all get what we want.

I agree with 96. Tony's dead. At the very end we are looking through his eyes as he is shot; hence, abrupt fade to black and long silence.

who would have shot him? The guy who the camera focused on was in the bathroom to his right, he looked straight ahead.

Furio. Who knows, just a messy ending to a once-good show that started to rot and strung a season together on "big" deaths.

to me it seems like the writer of the show was just unable to give into his audience and give them the iconic bloodbath scene that soprano fans have been looking forward to. Whether this is a blunder or just an act of defiance, I don't know, but to set your audience up with the great ending to the second to last episode and then not deliver in the finale seems unfair.

This season I watched the first two episodes, taped the rest and have not watched them(although I know Chris is dead), and then watched the finale last night. So, I have a few questions:

#96, you make a great point about Tony being shot in the fade to black ending but once Phil is dead and the other guy flips to the Feds, who is left to kill Tony? Sure, one of Phil's crew has motive but its too open-ended for me.

The part that I took away from the final scene was that every season, including last night, ended the same way with the Soprano family dinner ritual scene. So, when I see it happen again last night in the diner, I'm thinking same-old, same-old. David Chase set the scene and the tension level for Tony to be rubbed out but if I don't see it, I don't believe it happened.

That episode was not smooth at all for a finale. With ten minutes to go, it still needed a lot of work to tie everything up in a bow.

sorry about the spoiler forgot about the time zone thing, but i thought tony would give into the feds and enter the witness protection thing. That was the best prediction my family could come up with. What did you guys think would happen?

I really think it doesn't matter if Tony is dead or not and don't think that was the point of the episode or not. Obviously, everyone can have their own opinion (since we don't see exactly what happened), but I think if you're focusing on what happens to tony when it fades to black, then you're missing a big part of the final season.

Except that Tony's face is the last image, not of Meadow walking through the door.

While I agree with you that "who would have shot him?", that goes right into what Bobby said that "you don't hear anything." Which means that you won't know when or how you get popped or who does it.

This show was Tony Soprano! I'm sorry to disagree, but every episode hung on the life or death of that character. I understand there was a lot going on other than Tony and it should all be looked at. That's why I said that it's important to realize that we were setup to see that Tony's family will be ok (Carm has her real estate gig, Meadow is going to be married and be a lawyer, and AJ is cleaning up and will be in showbiz). Without Tony, the family will go on. That was the message I got. And the show was always about "Family".

I still think he got shot. It's not important to figure out who, just that it happened. As I have pointed out and Lego has agreed to, "You don't hear anything." Many shows/movies say the same thing (Goodfellas when Ray Liotta gets arrested by the cops, "When I hear them yelling, I knew I was still alive. When you're dead, you never hear anything" - or something like that).

But after talking to co-workers, I am starting to think the opportunity to do a movie or more shows was presented because we really don't know what actually happened. The writer (Scumbag Chase) is giving the viewer the chance to pick their own ending.

But business-wise, I was told it's not good to kill off main characters because when the show goes into syndication, people aren't as interested. Other ventures get hurt as well, in this case, cookbooks, video games, etc.

So, in the end...I don't really know.

Phil's crew wasn't too pleased with the hit on Jersey and gave the go ahead to pop Phil (if they could find him).

Without Tony, the family will go on. That was the message I got. And the show was always about "Family".

It is about his family, but how when he wins, he also loses. The fact that Meadow got a great job is a win, but she's not becoming a doctor, which is what Tony wants. Yes, she's getting married, but it's to Patsy Jr. who has ties to the "life". AJ gets a job that Tony wants him to (only to stay out of the military), but it's a job that he only got because of who Tony is (would he still continue in the business without Tony there to help him?) and isn't the direction that tony wanted him to go in either.

I still think he got shot. It's not important to figure out who, just that it happened. As I have pointed out and Lego has agreed to, "You don't hear anything." I think you're reading too much into the fact that it was silent as it cut to black. I said I agreed that "don't hear anything" means that you don't know who is going to whack you. You're referencing Goodfellas the wrong way. If that's what really happened, then you'd hear nothing before he got hit and you wouldn't hear the bell on the door ring. It'd be more like how Leon got hit in the Professional (silent before hit it and then a fade afterwards).

Also, I thought there were a few references to the Godfather. Specifically the orange in the beginning. That was a major symbol in the movies and yet nothing happened to Tony. Because of that, I'm guessing that the guy didn't come out of the bathroom shooting.

I didn't like the ending, but at the same time think that its a brilliant way to have ended it. There was no way to please every fan with an ending, so Chase pleased every fan by giving them everything and nothing that they wanted. The story now ends however you want it to. Yeah, it completely sucks that there is no 100% definitive ending, but now whatever you wanted to happen can happen. I doubt there will be a movie, and if there is I think it'll be the prequal idea they were saying, but at least the ending opens it up for that possibility.

I have to say though, I've never felt more nervous/tense during the last scene of a show like I was last night. Every single second Tony was sitting in that place I got more nervous of something big happening

I will agree with the "You never hear the one that gets you" as that was brought up on the show more than once in the past.

However, I think it was left open ended enough for the last moments to be seen in three different ways, which leaves a ton of possibilities, or enough for people to let it end on their own personal terms.

1. he got shot and killed, with the black and silence being the one that got him.

2. all of the people linining up and showing up in the restaurant were FBI getting ready to snag him, which tony knew was going to happen (based on the lunch earlier), so he just tried to enjoy a moment with his family and shit going ok before he got pinched. tony did look at the guy going to the bathroom with suspicious eyes, but didnt do anything? that would be out of character for him unless he knew he was done and couldnt put up a fight (ie. feds).

3. nothing was going to happen - it was just a scene feeing on paranoia and how stressful something like that could be - and its business as usual.

The only way we will ever find out is if they do an hbo movie in the future. if that doesn't happen, take it in whatever way gives you a warm and fuzzy. i personally think the ending was well done, as killing tony would leave just as many questions as him being alive.

From another board:

"OK, at first I was really angry. I mean really, really angry. I can't believe though that no-one has posted by now what happened. The only thing I saw that was right, was that in the last scene we are seeing through Tony's eyes. Remember when he was speaking with Bobby...basically saying that you don't see it happening?

So here is what I found out. The guy at the bar is also credited as Nikki Leotardo. The same actor played him in the first part of season 6 during a brief sit down concerning the future of Vito. That wasn't that long ago. Apparently, he is the nephew of Phil. Phil's brother Nikki Senior was killed in 1976 in a car accident. Absolutely Genius!!!! David Chase is truly rewarding the true fans who pay attention to detail.

So the point would have been that life continues and we may never know the end of the Sopranos. But if you pay attention to the history, you will find that all the answers lie in the characters in the restaurant. The trucker was the brother of the guy who was robbed by Christopher in Season 2. Remember the DVD players? The trucker had to identify the body. The boy scouts were in the train store and the brothas at the end were the ones who tried to kill Tony and only clipped him in the ear (was that season 2 or 3?).

Absolutely incredible!!!! There were three people in the restaurant who had reason to kill Tony and then it just ends. This was Chase's way of proving that he will not escape his past. It will not go on forever despite that he would like it to "don't stop". Not the fans!!! Tony would like it to keep going but just as we have to say goodbye, so does he. No more Tony and I guess we are supposed to be happy that Meadow didn't get clipped as well (she would have been between the shooter and Tony) since she is the only one worth a crap in that family.

Thank you David Chase for making it so obscure that I feel bad for hating you at first. Absolutely amazing!!!!"

I just got this in a chainmail here at work. If it's true, and the characters are correct, I think it can only mean Tony was whacked.

The actor who played the guy at the bar is Patrick Joseph Connolly. To my knowledge, it was his first episode on the Sopranos.

If it's true, do you honestly think he was killed? Having three different people at an obscure diner to kill him? One of the groups being boy scouts who were in the store when Bobby was murdered? To me, it sounds more like he's paranoid or that it's a dream.

I think its suppose to be symbolic that he cannot run from this, and he will eventually be killed or arrested. This will be his life, he will not escape it. His family is moving on, they dont need him anymore. Carm has real estate, medow is becoming a lawyer, and AJ is in the movie business.

just like Al Pacino said in the godfather...everytime I try to get out they drag me back in. You don't retire from that type of life.

I thought the ending was crap (as well as most of this last season). Give us a definitave ending. If I wanted to make up my own ending I would have submitted a script.

I said before, I don't think it's important to try and figure who did it. It could have been somone we don't even see in the scene.

I agree though. Chase seemed to like a bit of the surreal and has used it before in the show. It very well could have been a dream and Tony is still alive.

At this point, I'm leaning towards the conclusion that Chase wanted you to draw your own conclusion, and make your own "End" - whichever one suited you the most. Some people probably thought Tony should die, so you could make a case he did. Some people probably thought he should live, and you could make a case for that too. I would have liked final closure though. You watch a show for 8 years, it would be nice to know how the show you watch has really ended.

I never really watched much of the show but just got done watching the finale. I agree with the above quote. It fades so quickly to black, what are you supposed to think...? From what I have seen I believe Tony couldn't escape the past. But with scene of the daughter being a retard and not being able to park the car, would she have gotten in the way of the bullet?
