Souray or not?

Recommended Posts

Can somebody tell me what the hell is going on with Sheldon Souray? Is he a Devil or not? It seems like everyday this past week he was, then he wasn't, he was, then he wasn't. He says he is, then the Devils deny it, and vice versa.

All the sites I've read say the Devils are the frontrunner, and some sites say it's a done deal just needs to be announced. But then I read the Rangers are mysteriously in the running. How is beyond me with all the salaries they still have to pay for (Lundqvist, Shanny, Avery, Hossa). I came across some info that he wants to play for the Rangers and is being patient while they work out some numbers and possibly make some changes (trade Malik, arbitration with Avery and Hoss), and that he is willing to take a pay cut and drop his salary to 3.5-4, and not the 6 the Devils were supposedly willing to pay.

Word on the street is that he is waiting for Glen (Glen good friends w/ his agent) to make a possible deal that would free up cap space to sign him. He pretty much said NY area or Cali and NJ is close enough where he will settle for that if NY cannot get it done

That's pretty much what I heard. He's a playboy, he'd love to be in NY or LA. He was married to a Playmate/Baywatch babe.

i don't know why anyone would put that much money into a guy like that. why not just put a 20 goal scoring forward in defense? if you did that then you'll have a much cheaper souray. oh and just make sure the forward is a russian cause then you'll have the same defensive ability as souray as well. <_<

Very true, Mack...I am mixed on it, and it doesn't even look possible. But it is impressive that he scored as around as many goals as our whole defense did together last season.

Either way, I am more hyped about Staal coming up

I'd love it if the Sharks got him, but with all their RFAs next year they shouldn't sign him for more than 4.5/yr

Souray is just what the rangers need... on the PP. He isnt exactly a steady Dman. If anybody would pay 6 mil for a mediocre Dman its the rangers... well maybe if he was 35.

He is the last thing the Rangers need on the PP. The rangers PP runs through Jagr, just like every other powerplay he has been on since Mario retired. Souray is only useful on the PP when he's blasting away every chance he gets. Souray would be a huge disappointment in NY unless they totally change the PP and then Jagr wouldn't be comfortable/happy.

Keep in mind, there will be two different PP units getting equal time, like Renney did after game 54 last year when the light went off and he realized Jagr and Shanny were not working well together

I'm surprised he isn't getting offered more money to go elsewhere. I expected him to be in the 6.5+ range.

If he was better than average in his own zone, he probably would be. It's just hard to pay your #4 or #5 defenseman that kind of money simply because he's good on the powerplay.

As Theo said, Souray would be used on the 2nd PP unit which is more of a shoot em up PP.

He's still a top 4 D-man, who can play first unit PP and PK.

If you're paying a guy $6M+, he better be a #1 guy that logs 30 minutes a night and not just top a 4 defenseman.

I agree, that he doesn't deserve, but I did expect it. I don't think a 30 year old forward who has broken 70 points once in his career is worth 6.2 or a "good leader" who is "clutch" is worth 7+ mill when he really isn't an elite player, but they all got it.

Heyyyy, stop right there buddy. I deplore your implications that we overpaid for a 30 year old guy who's hit 70pts once in his career.

He's actually 27 thank you very much and he got to 70 3 times.

Smyth is the first one. Drury's the good leader who is clutch, and he isn't "elite"

Oh, my mistake. I thought you were talking about both Ranger acquisitions: Gomez and Drury. I should have known better, Gomer is making way more than 6.2mil LOL.

What does it matter what we think a player is worth? They were offered the contracts so why shouldn't they sign them? Look at the Monopoly money they throw around in baseball at free agents. There is nothing like capitalism.

There's no cap in Baseball.

All the more reason to sign a contract that a fan may not think a player is worth. Go for some role reversal and none of us say, no thanks, I'll sign for less. Like Janis Joplin said, "Get it while you can."
