So, I was at the midnight screening of harry potter

Recommended Posts

My wife is a big big fan of the books, and I have no problem saying I really enjoyed the movies (I am a big brendan gleason and gary oldman fan).

She had said she wanted to go this weekend, but I have a game on friday night, and will be at the caps prospects camp then beering afterwards. She is working from home today, and I have grown accustomed to getting little sleep as I worked a full time job and 4 nights a week in a bar at home.

So, on with the show.

This one is definately darker, and moodier. There is not as much cheesy one liners in it. It has got mixed reviews, but I think it's one of the best yet. There is no quidditch or the train, or other sort of kid friendly asides in it, but its a solid showing.

I won't get into too many details, although, if you've read the books you know them already. I have not read any of them, my wife said there was some stuff left out, but it was probably for the better, because the book dragged a bit.

The effects were again, fantastic, the acting was solid. Helena Bonham Carter was good in her very small role, although I'm told she is being introduced now, but will have a bigger part in the next one.

The kids shouting/texting/crying was fairly acceptable. There was one guy who shouted something and got a laugh, so kept trying to say things, and failed everytime thereafter, until someone shouted "shut up and let us watch the damn movie", after that it was perfect. Said someone may or may not have had a slight brogue in his voice.

All in all, my second favorite potter flick, Prisioner of Azkeban still my favorite (again, the oldman/gleason thing), but much much better than some of the bad reviews. I think the reviewers were waiting on quiddich, and the sweets that make you sound like an animal, reviewing it as a kids movie, rather than an actual serious, somewhat dark movie.

Effects in the big bruhaha at the end were simply fantastic, I mean, really really really good

This gets a solid B on the allsmoke movie rating scale, and an A- on the harry potter list

Couple of things.

1. I do not understand fully grown 30 something men and women dressing up as wizards and such. It is beyond me.

2. I do not understand people clapping in the theater when something happens on screen, I don't get it at all.

3. Preview for 10,000 BC, this movie looks really really really good

4. 2 hours 18 minute runtime, got home about 3.10 (had to drop off a friend, who works with my wife, and she also conveniently is working from home today), fell into bed, and up again at 5.41....snooze...5.50...snooze...5.59. So I am a little precious package of love and joy this morning.

5. Midnight screenings are good in the sense that the idiot to normal person ratio skews very favorably toward the normal person, which is why there was only one idiot shouting out, and then no one when he was silenced.

That part of your post is real debatable. I've heard that midnight showings bring out some odd customers.

Perhaps for the lord of the rings/star wars type, where it's aimed at an older audience, but this movie, while anyone can enjoy, is aimed at the younger ones reading the books, and for a weekday midnight screening, there were lots of parents out, so perhaps it was just this one. This is the only time I've gone to a midnight screening of a movie, and that was so I could keep my weekend clear for hockey and hockey related drinking activities

The midnight shows usually bring out the uber-fanboys and not the normal moviegoing public, ergo the dressing up. It may help cut down on the number of kids and teenagers, but it's not where you find the "average" person.

My girlfriend is going to see it tonight. I'm working at The Fitch 'till 11, so she can't make me sit through it...instead, she's going with a few other girls from the pool (they're lifeguards). I've never understood the appeal behind the fantastical bullshit, but to each his own, I suppose.

Allsmoke, if you didn't like the previous 4 (well, the first two are the only ones I saw and I hated them), will you like this one?

I would say yes, this one is a lot darker than the previous ones, and not so kidcentric, if that make sense.

It's just a good movie.I am a gary oldman and brendan gleason fan, so this one, and the prisoner of azkeban I enjoyed as they have decent roles in each

I'd expect midnight showings have people dressed up as wizards that are obsessed with the books. I highly doubt more normal people go to the midnight show. Most of them are probably the same people who dress up as chewbacca at the star wars midnight showings.

We went and it was something to see that many girls in schoolgirl outfits. Panties, panties, everywhere.

The midnight screening for Spiderman 3 was awful, there was under 5 girls besides the ones we brought. My cousin had to wipe the nerdo drool off her at the end of the night.

Cause most people go to see a movie so they can pick up chicks... pretty sure unless you're in a movie yourself, if you didn't bring the girl, you don't have much of a chance

She's your cousin, you have to learn to behave yourself.

WTF is wrong with people dressing up. It adds entertainment and FUN to something that is meant to be FUN. GWD damm are people uptight these days

Yea, that wasn't the point - who goes to a movie theatre and checks the girl/guy ratio? Sitting in a theatre isn't exactly a place to meet new people.

Add fun? No, it just makes you look like a tool. I don't know how seeing a 40 year old dude dressed up as wizard with a broom makes the movie more fun.

2. I do not understand people clapping in the theater when something happens on screen, I don't get it at all.

I fully agree with that. When I saw Transformers the other day people were clapping like left and right. I guess they don't understand that the director isn't sitting in the theater with us. It is also a hassle because you can't hear the next few lines...I may just start booing at bad parts of movies now to buck the trend

So project, you're saying that if you walked into a theatre, and was looking for a seat and saw only guys with a few exceptions, you wouldn't notice that there were only a few girls in the presence.

Back on topic:

I have not seen the Prisoner of Azkaban yet, should I see that one before I see this? What was before the Prisoner of Azkaban, I can't recall if I've seen any other than the first two. If someone could help me out that'd be great.

And some people think it's stupid to pay a lot of money to play beer league hockey.

Sheesh, let people have their fun.

(as long as they are not talking during the movie - that shit drives me up the wall)

I would like to add, the worst screening I saw was the opening for Return of the King. At one point about 5 people who were dressed up were going over some part from a previous movie.

I don't know how people can do that publicly, I wouldn't even tell my friends I played world of warcraft when I was into that.
