Professional Equipment Managers

Recommended Posts

Welcome to the board! You'll be very entertained.

For those of you who don't think equipment managers matter, just ask Ray Martyniuk. not too happy with one in particular.

I smell a story!!

What salary would an NCAA/CCHA EM.C make? I would presume more at the Big Ten schools?

Thank you Jimmy. I was reading some older posts where you were having trouble with customers buying things online instead of in your shop and some of the things you were doing to combat that. Have you had any luck with the problem? I've run into it recently with that deal that Mission has been offering where you get a free OPS with a pair of skates.

Brandon,

Is this because we don't carry Mission or is this only an online offer?

Three of our regular customers who are on the Wolverines (the age below Matt's kids, squirt I think) have bought the Mission skates that are offered online with a free Mission OPS. I'm not sure what model it is but myself and a few others haven't been impressed by the Mission skate. It's heavy and it's likely that they weren't selling well so they offered the stick deal with it to help move them. The OPS wasn't bad though. If you painted it silver, you'd think that it was an Easton.

The funny thing is that one of the moms had just asked when the new NBH XXV skates came in because she ONLY buys from us. Yet she showed up a week later with the Mission's. But don't worry, we hit her with the sharpening and skate oven fee. I'm not worried about losing their business in the future. They come in often and we have a good relationship. They just thought that the free stick was too good to pass up.

That's a good question. I haven't had any experience in the college side of the game. Jeffrey, can you look into that? I'm sure your BU boys can help answer that.

great read, as someone who loves to mess around with my equipment and experiment with new things, i really enjoyed that

It seems that a lot of people on this site are gearheads. You know you're a gearhead when you go to a hockey game and pay more attention to what stuff the players are using than the actual game. "I don't know who #19 was but I can tell you what kind of skates he uses"

Truthfully, I done mind if a customer buys online. I shop online all the time, good deals there sometimes. What bothers me is when they intentionally use my shop as a fitting room for their online purchase. I consider it dishonest and stealing money right out of my pockets. The idiots don't understand it costs me a lot of money to display a product, a lot more than the 2x3" pictures the online stores post. Having said that, most of what I sell matches online prices or cheaper anyway. We've always had low prices. I'd much rather make a local sale than lose it to some guy operating out of his garage in Louisiana.

Mission always runs the free stick deal in the Summer, no big deal.

Not sure if this is the right place to put this but how would someone go about becoming an equip manager? Even an apprentice? Im very interested. Its my dream job :)

Being female is a disadvantage im assuming?

I imagine it'd be a plus for a womens college team.

I think one good way to get started is going to a college with a varsity hockey program, then contacting the schools athletic department or hockey equipment manager. For example, Michigan (and I believe most div 1 schools) has student assistants who help out (not sure if volunteer or work study). I know they had males and females on the staff when I was in school.

Still pretty rare though. There are 2 female full-time managers in DI women's hockey.

Female student managers are a huge help on womens teams with male head equipment managers. They can go into the locker room at times the head guy cant.

I want to be an equipment manager too. What can I do now that will increase my chances of that? My midget team considered me their eqm haha. I always brought a bag onto the bench with all kinds of tape, scissors, wax, a stone, etc... I would end up taping a lot of sticks and stone"ing" a few skates. I like doing that stuff. I mod my own equipment to fit better and curve my own sticks. I have around 70 pro stock sticks that I bought from money I made making knee hockey sticks and selling them on eBay. I make mini sticks for penguin players kids through the pens assistant eqm that I have made friends with. What do you guys think my chances are of becoming an equipment manager someday?

You actually would have a pretty easy time in the NCAA with a girls team They very much like having females around. Cornell has one although she is asst coach as well. But if you were in that Area I know they would hire one part time. But you need practice I would get in a at good Pro Shop. I have a few awesome ladies working for me. There is one in particular just moved to BC after done playing and running a Pro Shop near Windsor. Another didnt make her school team so she does the skates. When she is home she goes back to the store she worked at before for me and she has some pretty notable NHL regulars.
