am i nuts

Recommended Posts

okay i wondered if i'm the only person that has these kind of crazy things happen to me.

first off, i put black laces on my skates, and i totally sucked, falling all over the place. my feet just didn't look right down there. popped some white laces in there and got 2 goals that night.

same goes for tape. i've got it in my head somehow that white tape feels different than black tape. i know i must be nuts but i can't stickhandle at all with black tape.

please tell me i'm not the only one

Hockey players are traditionally superstitious. Certain players will get to the rink early to put their skates on, then just sit there in them for half an hour.

Others have to put their gear on the same way, every time.

Some call it superstitious, some call it nuts, you are the only one who can work out what you are (although superstitious sounds better!!!)

Stick with what works.

I used to take a luke warm shower before getting dressed every game as a routine. One game our team's bus arrived to the arena late, and I didn't have time to shower. I think I had a 4 point night, so I stopped showering before games...

Most of it is in your head, but so much of the game is mental, you should have a clear mind going into the game.

All my friends and family (atually pretty much anyone tyhat knows me) thinks I'm nuts. I have to get to the rink at least 1 hr before game time. I put everything on from left to right. Call it habbit, superstition, loose screw, whatever, but when one this gets changed, it seems like my game gets thrown off. The funny thing is, lace color, tape color, jersey color don't seem to affect me at all. Probably because I don't pay too much attention to those things as much as what I can actually feel while I am playing. I guess what I am trying to say is that being nuts might just be a requirement for all hockey players, not just goalies.

I hear ya. I was on a long goal streak until I switched to new laces last week. Played a couple games and now I'm having issues not falling over!

In all actuality, I went from well-used (and stretched) cloth laces to these really stretchy black laces. So my laces were too loose, then too tight, then too loose again, and finally my foot was killing me and I was losing edges left and right.

Anyway, I'm thinking of putting the old laces in...or at least getting some "cheap" laces instead of the "nice" ones I have in now

I ahve the same problem with black tape, i don;t remember if i play bad but in my head the black tape doesnt even last half the time as white tape. and when i am playig good if i don't go knock on wood and then hit the boards 1,2,3 my luck will go away.

I've got a thing with tape as well. Always white on the blade, and I always use the extra-wide stuff. Somethin about black tape on the blade that I just can't deal with, haha. Most people only use black to hide the puck better or whatever, but it's never affected scoring for me or anything.

Oh, and I always tuck the sleeves of my jersey into my elbow pads. I just can't play any other way...if I try it with the sleeves hanging my passes are always off, shots don't hit the net. Weird stuff.

For me i always get to the rink an hour early, then me and my teammates hang out (it helps me relax because usually i'm really tense before a game), then about 30 minutes before game time we put our stuff on. I always put the left part of something on first (like the left shin pad then the right shin pad). When i get to skates i put the left one on first and the the right one without tying either one. then i tie the left one and tie the right one.

Also two years ago one of my teammates would get thrown into the trashcan before a game. We completely dominated that season.

We all have out corks. I have a particular stretch routine that I do... What sucks is since I have a strained quad I can't do the full routine. I haven't scored in a real game in like 8 games. :(

Same here...I listened to the same CD on the way to the rink all spring. Everytime I played it we won.

Same thing w/my sock tape. Used clear, when I changed to white we continued winning. Whatever works in your head.....

Last season I insisted on coming to the rink late every game. I would show up usually when the Zam went on. I liked it cause it because I usually goofed around in the lockerroom and lost focus on the game thats coming up.

Although this year with a new coach I dont think that habit will be tollerated. <_<

Black color absorbs light - white reflects it. So white laces and tape tend to form photovoltaic vortexes as the leading edges interact with photon stream (not to mention gamma ray and quark particles, but those are less important). It is those vortexes that cause the foil of the blade and a toe cap of your skates to generate additional dynamic lift and centrifugal negation of Heisenberg shift compensation. Thus you scoring goes up by a factor of PI - as been astutely observed by you.

However, if your stick is from warrior then you are just mo' pimpin'.

THAT'S IT.....I'M CONVINCED!!!! I'm switching my tape jobs tonight!!

I'm taping up one stick with my usual Kovy-style mid to toe with standard white and another one heel to toe with wide white. Whichever one scores more goals becomes my new superstition :P

I buy black laces with every pair of skates, and use black tape on my sticks (blades and knobs).

On the way to the rink, I have to stop and get a cup of coffee (black) with a few ice cubes so I can gulp it down. After getting fully dressed, I take a coffee leak and hit the ice.

No physical advantage here, just mental. No coffee = no solid game.

white tape on the blade, black on top, everything put on left then right, always drop a duece before going on the ice. always black laces (although since one broke on me i've had one yellow and one black because i'm too lazy to even it out and throw a new blacky in there) I always need new tape before a game too, practice is fine but always new tape job for a game.

I like these superstition threads. I tape my blade with whatever color I'm feeling, but I do like to wax it and melt it then wax it some more. I've never rocked black laces, but willing to try. I like white tape on my shinguards.

So does the "Heisenberg shift compensation" allow you to quantum transport the puck off your white tape and into the back of the net, thereby by-passing the goalie?

But all nerdiness aside... Equipment goes on left to right and black tape goes on the blade. I tried white tape on the blade, but I had trouble seeing it in my peripheral vision because it blends in with the ice.
