Slats hurts avery's feelings

Best arbitration story was probably in baseball last year, the Marlins brought up how Miguel Cabrera didn't go to any of the post-season meetings and how he gave all the veterans a cold shoulder. They did this due to arguing over 200,000 between 7,200,000 and 7,400,000.

Maybe they can't for some binding reason, but I would love to see books written by arbitrators over some of the things brought up during talks.

It would be nice to see the things that go on with Drury and Avery in the same locker room....

You're probably one of the same who said you wonder how he will do w/ Jagr in the room. Meanwhile they became very good friends. I am sure with Drury's maturity and experience things will be fine.

BTW- The old Avery would have slammed Sather by now. He is much matured, still has a way to go. But he is a lot better than a few years ago.

I think Shannahan is the glue that will hold avery together. I remember when ESPN done the season on Detroit, Shanny was the one who sort of kept him honest. And when he was traded, shanny was the first person who he went to about it.

If shanny is happy there, it will go a long way to avery staying in line, because he seems to really look to shanny as the mentor type for him, and doesn't want to let him down.

I'm a Rangers fan, just like you...but a few years ago? Dude, it was LAST YEAR! A few years ago, he didn't pull that shit because he was on a talent-laden Red Wings team.

I just don't buy this 8 month "transformation." Give him time. He'll show his ass soon enough.

We will see, JR. He has said some terrible things in the past, and while Shanny's influence is helping, I think he is become more mature on his own as well. We do have to give it more time, you are right on that. I never expect him to be an angel, he will always have some comment or another. But if he says something too absurd which runs him off the team, I will believe there is no hope

Considering Drury basicly ran Satan out of buffalo by himself because he was bad for the team....it could get interesting. Although you'd never really know it because Drury would never say anything about something like that to the media.

and the old Avery = the current Avery. He's been on your team for what 6 months? Give him time, you'll learn to hate him.

I'll like him for as long as he gives me reason to think differently. Mind you, the end result I care about is what he does on the ice and of course I don't want him causing factions in the room. I have had the same approach with Jagr and have found over and over what people told me to expect has never come true....3 or 4 yrs later I am still waiting

Yup, agree 100%. I said the same thing in another thread. Only a matter of time.

There's a reason people get stigmas attached to them. And poor repuations for that matter.

I also think this arbitration hearing will give him fuel for when he does "flip" and I don't think there will be anything Shanny can do about it. He's a loose cannon. He's got mental issues. He's the product of a broken home. He'll go sour.

At 1.9 I think they'd be silly not to hold onto him and see what he can do for an entire season.

You would think, but he is already upset by what they said about him, he now feels he is being underpaid by $0.7 million, because of what they said about him.

If they keep him, he could erupt back into the avery that the Rags fans, along with other fans knew before he was traded for.

It's a tough call, the award is reasonable, but is it too reasonable that it will cause him to ruin the locker room as he has done before?

This is one of the best things I think that could have happened to him. Gets an award for $1.9mil AND he becomes an UFA after the season! You can bet he is not only going to be on his best behavior, but, he'll play his ass off.

It puts NYR at roughly $52mil, so, someone needs to go at that number. Ironically, it is Shanny's performance bonus putting them over the cap if they choose to hang on to Avery.

The next 48 hours should be interesting. Maybe a new thread/poll should be started with whether they keep him or dump him.

The Shanny bonus doesn't apply to this season as far as I know. It kicks in next season if he meets the bonuses.

The Rangers signed Avery to the deal, btw

96- You're still waiting for Jagr to turn sour for god sakes

I believe it's counted toward the cap this year, however, the rags can go over by the amount he can potentially make in bonuses, and the amount he makes gets counted to the cap next season.

So if the cap is $50 mil, Shanny is making $4 mil, but $3 mil of that is bonus/incentives the rags could go up to $53 mil on the cap, but if he hits only half those bonuses, there would be a $1.5 mil hit on next seasons cap.

Am I making sense, or am I even right?

What about this from Fischler

http://blogs.msg.com/gameon/2007/07/a-chance-meetin.html

A Chance Meeting With Darius

There I was, minding my business this afternoon on a bench in Central Park, early for my dental appointment with my favorite periodontist, Dr. John Varoscak.

In times like these, my favorite hobby is people-watching so I intently gazed at the personality panorama as New Yorkers -- and out-of-towners -- speed-walked, jogged, bird-watched and, of course, bicycled past my temporary resting place.

WHOOPS!

Who was that?

A blond guy was pedaling up toward me -- nothing new! -- but this chap had a familiar look about him.

I did a double-take and said to myself, "Wow! That young man is a thin version of Darius Kasparaitis."

Then, he pedaled 10 yards closer.

HOLEY MOLEY! It IS my man, Darius.

I was about to yell at him, "STOP! DEFENSEMAN! STOP!!

But no screaming was necessary. Kasper, the friendly ghost, flashed a big smile, threw his left arm up in greeting and brought his bike to a less-than-screeching halt.

We had a warm embrace upon which I produced my bike helmet and red warning vest. "Just want you to know, old pal, that you're not the only hockey guy cycling in Central Park."

Darius laughed. "I do it all the time. That's when I'm not working out at Chelsea Piers."

It would be an understatement to tell you that the (still) Rangers defenseman looks fabulous. He told me that he's dropped something like 20 pounds, looks 10 years younger than the last time he skated for the Blueshirts and is determined to make a comeback.

"They (Rangers) didn't buy me out," he chortled. "And I saw Glen (Sather) recently and even he was surprised at how good I looked."

If Kasper performs in training camp as well as he looks now, I believe that he has a good chance of making the New York varsity, no matter who the competition might be.

I only hope he has a fair chance.

My dental appointment was soon arriving and I had to cut out.

"Let's ride sometime," urged Darius and he gave me his number.

As he pedaled off into the park, toward 72nd Street, it dawned on me what a fun guy he always has been and what an effective defenseman he was until his past, unfortunate, season.

If, for whatever reason, he does NOT make the Rangers' varsity, I suspect that a few other clubs might be interested in nabbing the friendly ghost -- and not just for laughs!

Will he get a fair shake of the stick, or is he traded/minors bound

Don't be mislead!

He's only looking that good because he's a batchelor again. Has nothing to do with coming back and playing smart, reliable hockey.

PS - I trust "The Mavin's" rundown on the current state of hockey and its players about as much as I trust Jagr to stay away from the phone just before the gates open at the Kentucky Derby.
