Russian Hockey digest has a piece on a hockey stick museum

Recommended Posts

I got the link from http://japersrink.blogspot.com/

Here is the direct link to the article

And for the ladies, there are pictures of ovechkin in a towel with some of the sticks, god knows why they thought that would be the best way to show the curves, but they did.

Honestly, if you put stan mikitas blade down, and made one left handed clone, and put it beside it, you would have a perfect circle

Could somebody explain Sasha for me I'm slightly confused?

It's a nickname for alexander in russia. There is a russian guy who works with my wife called alexander too, but his wife calls him sasha.

Like "Bob" for robert or "Mike" for Michael

So does Ovie just wander around random places only wearing a towel? I could see if he was in a locker room...but that's a museum.

It says in the article, that they were finishing training, and going to the sauna house, but the guy who is setting up the museum has a sauna at his place,so they went there instead.

All the stuff is still in his house, he is settingup the museum now

Couple of my favorite parts..

Sasha, where is the stick that you scored your famous goal to Phoenix’ net?

A. Ovechkin: Washington’s general manager George McPhee took it. The stick is hanging on a wall in his office.

Look at Hull’s stick carefully; you see this special hollow on a handle? This is because two fingers were broken, and a forefinger didn’t bend… And this is Mikita’s stick.

A. Ovechkin: Really!? Such a small stick! But look at the curve! He would get a 10-minute penalty nowadays…

The curve of Chicago’s forward’s stick looks like a semicircle. How to play with it?

S. Afanasiev: My major pride – Kharlamov’s sticks. I’ve got ten of them. This stick was prepared for him to play at the Canada Cup in 1981. But Valeri was left out of the national team, and the next day he died in a car accident.

Ovechkin takes the stick with care, looks at it from every angle, cautiously wears on him…

S. Gonchar: Kharlamov’s curve is same as Malkin’s.

S. Gonchar: Wow, where did this stick come from?! Four years ago I sent it to manufactory in Detroit. I wanted to make several copies of it. Literally, I begged them not to lose a template. And still it got lost! I called them like five times; they kept saying ‘sorry’… And now it’s found! Here, in Petersburg, damn it!..

S. Afanasiev: Actually, I honestly purchased it a half of a year from a company Warrior. This stick was signed off to be thrown away. If you want, I can give it back to you. And, Sasha, would you like Bure’s stick? But not this one, though.

Ovechkin holds Russian Rocket’s stick from Olympics in Nagano.

A. Ovechkin: No, no, no! I’m just playing around. I understand, you need it for business.

Smokey, once again a great find. There is a book from the late 60s titled "Orr on Ice." It is part how-to and part the Bobby Orr story. I have it somewhere in a trunk in my garage. There is a section on equipment and, of course, sticks. There are pictures which show the Bruins players sticks lined up against the dressing room wall. The banana hook curves on those sticks is something I will never forget. The Mikita banana curve is genuine. I thought I was over the top with my glove collection. This guy has got the good stuff!

My favorite:

S. Afanasiev: Valeri’s curve was changing with time. Could you guys play with this kind of sticks in NHL these days?

A. Ovechkin: They would brake all the time after slap shots. We are having trouble with plastic sticks, but these are made out of wood…

Hahaha, plastic! He can think his sticks are made outta tuna fish for all I care as long as he keeps up his amazing play.

lb33knight: Trust me AO knows exactly what type of material his stick is made out of.

Probably just a bad translation, or because he feels his catapaults are nothing better than a piece of plastic, durability wise.

Even NHL'ers cant' end the "black tape is better than white tape" discussion:

What color of tape is better to wrap around the stick – white or black?

S. Gonchar: If using black, than a goaltender sees a moment when the puck leaves the stick with delay.

V. Kozlov: And if using white, than it is easier for a player to view and control the puck. So, it really depends.

That was pretty interesting stuff, thanks allsmoke!

aaaaaand, just to end the discussion, white is better because you can see the puckmarks. I thought everyone knew that :P
