Need a little more info about your age, level of play, etc... Anyone who makes a recommendation without that kind of info is just telling you what they like.

yeah, for beginner league use a full cage. there is usually some incidental contact and stray sticks in beginner leagues. i don't think a season has gone by that i didn't at some point think to myself: "lucky i had this cage on..."

i have two helmets one for my school team with a full cage because its college rules and one with a half visor for drop in and beer leagues. I have never gotten a cut while wearing a full cage but now from one drop in i have a nice little scar on my chin because someone ran into me. My advice for a beginner playing in a beginner league wear a full cage because you don't know who can control there sticks in that league. As for color I use a bauer helmet and it came with the "true vision" cage i like it the bars seem to blend in with the ice so you don't see them. So I would recomend a silver or white cage or the "true vision" but the black bars arn't exactly that bad to look through either.

Another bump for a cage.

On more than one occasion in my beer league, I've seen a ref almost eat someone else's stick because they had it too high.

I've even been hit in the face with a slapshot during a sticktime session. Sometimes I wear one of those cheaper Itech visors to sticktime, but I was lazy and stuck with my cage. I still have my teeth.

Moral of the story: Wear a cage.

I highly recommend trying out a cage in the store, because every face is different and you may have a bar running straight across your vision on one, but have better visibility through another.

That being said, I'd recommend the Jofa/CCM FM 480. Great protection, looks great and fits on any helmet, and won't break the bank.

I've tried black, white, and chrome, and I settled on chrome because it won't rust and it blends out nicely from a vision standpoint.

I wear a chrome cage, but it isn't true that all chrome cages don't rust because my is very rusted just like my last 4 or 5. That is why they are cheap.

I couldn't get a 480 to fit on my Intake, nor could my LHS...

No to black and yes to chrome, got it.

Thanks guys!

If you can, try some out. Personally chrome messes with my vision, and black works best (I prefer a half shield though).

IMHO,if you're not a pro, cage is the sensible choice. What about that so-called "tru-vision" not shiny chrome, but a matte grey. Supposedly interferes less with vision? (Could be hype though.)

I sweat like a damn faucet, and no matter what I was consistently either fogging or dripping on the half shield that I was using. Have since gone to an Itech Half Cage....and actually took a Dremel to a couple of the vertical bars directly in my line of sight. For me....works out perfectly.

Legality was not an issue for me with my cage in my league....they simply aren't required.

Kind of ironic.....since just last night when my team scrimmaged another one of my teammates got a stick blade in his right eye area. Got 12 stitches ranging from in outside corner of his eyelid to above his eyebrow. Worst part of it all....he got hit with the blade so hard that he actually got a fracture of his occular socket. OUCH!!

On a brighter note....one of the coaches took him to the local WOMEN'S HOSPITAL's ER...so at least we get to bust on him for that for the rest of the season. :P

Interesting, what did you end up going with? One player in my league has an Intake with a Itech 908 I2 RBE VIII and it looks like a nice combo.

I have a buddy that moved to a new helmet last season and couldn't stand the chrome that came with it and went back to the black he'd used for years.

First helmet I bought was a Bauer 4000 with True-Vision and I couldn't be happier. I've never accidentally focused on the cage during play and it's never been an issue.
