Canada v Russia Superseries

Recommended Posts

Russia finally with a cheapshot of their own. Unfortunately, it was against the good guy

It would be great if 3 or so guys from each team gets F'ed up from this "series." Would teach a good lesson to both countries of what a bad idea it was and how meaningless the series is. How it pales in comparison to past ones and how the teams are so uneven from the start

Of course, I say that in jest and do not truly mean it.

While I agree the series was a stupid idea, the first one was also supposed to be a one-sided route for Canada.

Canada has been doing it throughout. Sutter is famous for his goonery on the other team's top players. Ya think it would start to go the other way eventually, eh?

Famous for it? How many times have you seen him play outside of this series? What top players has he taken out?

I don't know if it is a coincidence or not if Canada was able to injure Russia's top two players or not with dirty plays. It seemed like the gameplan.

I heard it first from a British Columbia fellow- Big time Canadian homer as well, but he did have this to say:

It's how he coaches. Look at his track record at the WJCs, his style is "injure the other team's best players". It's a shame, because I think Team Canada could have blown Russia out of the water on talent alone.
And then the Canadians bitch and whine when the Russians don't send their best players to the CHL - Russia Challenge... I wonder how long it will take for Sutter's star players to turn on him in NJ? Probably not long, when they are constantly getting jumped as retaliation for cheapshots.
This series is a joke because of Brent Sutter and his "injure their star player" coaching style. If you had a coach who actually allowed players to compete best vs best it would have been a great series. Canada probably still would have won by a landslide, but it would have been entertaining.

After what I have seen, I cannot disagree with him and I do have to take his word with some merit. Perhaps he is wrong and me using second hand advice can be dangerous. But I do know he has watched past WJC and even has access to the WHL games

The slewfoot did not deserve such a high and dangerous hit in response. It gave him a concussion.

QFT

I'm sure the sentiment of this series would change a lot if the Russians injure Sutter, Tavares or Perron in retaliation. All of this is going way beyond physical play.

I may be way off base here, but I understood that slew-footing was quite dangerous. It may look a little silly, but the risk of injury (knees, back of the head hitting the ice) is relatively high.

I thought you were referring to his son, but it is along the lines of how Sutter coaches. I don't get the impression that he suggests cheap shots, but he likes the physical pounding, and the wear and tear. Canada's had a number of players who have done this. Adam Mair, Jordin Tootoo and now Brandon Sutter are the first 3 that come to mind. Although it happens every year, I just forget the names as most don't amount to alot.

Also this "series" was Tretiak's idea, he apperantly had to beg the Canadians to do it.

That's terrible..I blamed both countries equally up until now, but I see now that Tretiak and The Russians picked off more than they could handle. And now they will be embarassed 0-8,

I wouldn't be surprised if Tretiak did it, in part, to draw attention to a lack of funding for development. It's sort of a win-win for him: either the Russians win as underdogs, and he looks like a genius for putting the series on, or if they lose, he can claim that it was because of the failures of their development system, and get more support to put his changes through.

Well, they are building some nice looking rinks. Did you check out the photos from Siberia with Team Canada players sticking their heads out of the top of the buses? It is on www.hockeycanada.ca. Siberia really does look like the middle of nowhere.

Fetisov is the Minister of Sport, I believe. Since the fall of communism, all of Soviet sport is a mess. I see it firsthand everyday at the rink I work in. All the leading Soviet figure skating coaches have left the Soviet. Now we also have lots of elite Eastern Euro skaters training under these Soviet coaches as well in my building. Most of the older ice facilities in Russia are now falling apart. It is the private money of the Russian pro league that is propping up Soviet hockey. There is no true grass roots organization like HockeyCanada. Whatever Tretiak is working with is years behind the Canadians in organization and results. Look at all the Eastern Euros coming to the CHL. It is as simple as that.

The true glory days of the Red Army team, the red CCCP jersey wreaking havoc in all the zones of the hockey rink, and the wizardry they possessed is long since gone. It is only a memory to be watched in an old video from 87 or before. Rest in peace, CCCP Hockey.

87 Canada Cup is the best hockey ever. More intensity per shift than most regular season games complete. The stick work on the body is vicious, the passing is premier, and the goals are glorious. The true passion of hockey is the 87 Canada Cup.

I was just watching the '87 Canada Cup. RIP KLM.

How were you watching it? Do you own a copy of the games?

Yeah, I bought it from the CBC online store a while back, when they had a 30% off + free shipping promotion.

Glad to help - the video quality isn't phenomenal, but it's more than enough to be enjoyable, and the sound is terrific.

I'm currently thinking about adding the '76 series to my collection, but I've heard the video is a bit dodgey. Someone's gotta have those masters...

Pretty good quality and I like the retro jersey thing.

Question: Did IIHF Rules Change? Shouldn't Tavares be wearing a full mask because he is under 18? There are a few Russians who are. And the year Crosby played on the Jr. team as a 17 year old...he did.

Thanks, I wasn't 100% if Perron got a stick to it or not, but the game of follow the white skates will have to end now it's 2.45AM over here and I've gotta be at work in 2 and a half hours. :(
