Best Hip Protection

Recommended Posts

Here's the deal - I'm in a pair of Tackla 951s that I picked up used for a good price. Problem IMO with the 951s is the lack of hip

protection. Playing in a C-league, i'm not Bobby Orr and tend to fall once in a while. Last few falls have been brutal on the hip with

the 951s.

What would be a good replacement for the 951s or is it possible to add protection to the 951s ? I like the Tackla fit and weight , but haven't really tried much else as I don't have a well-stocked LHS close by. I'm willing to spend a few extra $$ if the hip protection is there.

I see several Tackla models on Hockey World, but wouldn't know where to start ? Tackla's website has limited info on hip protection ...

And I would definitely consider other brands as well ...

Thanks

I don't know how much actual help I will be, but I have a pair of Itech HP 8000 pants, and the tailbone, spine and hip protection are fantastic with them.

The reason I don't know how much help I'll be is because I don't know if they still make them,or where you can get them.

I'm a big guy, in a beginner league, so protection is important, for as often as I go down. I have taken several heavy falls, either in front of the net, in the corners, or tripping over the blueline, and so far, these things have been fantastic, whether its on my hip, direct hit to the coccix (sp) or one of those jarring falls.

I can't recommend them enough.

If you like the tackla but want more protection, try the 9000. I had a customer ask me about the hip protection while trying a pair on, so I wacked her across the hip with a stick. She bought the pants.

I was in the exact same situation. My old Tackla 951s were okay, but I needed better protection for my aging hips. I went up to Easton's Stealth 9s. Overkill? Perhaps, but they fit me really well, I have no mobility issues skating in them, and the hip (and all other...) protection is great. YMMV.

I also use and like the Stealth series, nice cross between mobility/weight and protection. I use the S5's, tried the S9's and they are nice as well (but I got a sweet deal on the S5's from a MSH member).

Chadd, I assume you mean the 9000 ACS ? I tried to Google them, but nothing came up. Where would I find these ?

Depends on where you are, US and Canadian Tackla products are slightly different. The differences between the US 9000 and the Canadian 9000 ACS should be minimal. Since you're using the 951, I'm going to assume you're Canadian. Any Tackla dealer can order them if they don't have them in stock.

Almost Canadian, from Niagara Falls - picked up the 951s on Ebay awhile back and living in Florida now. I found a place called the Hockey Shop in BC that has 9000 although the price seems rather high.

ACS doesn't really mean anything and the Canadian 9000s use a slightly lighter nylon in the shell. If you have a local shop, they should be able to order them for you. Otherwise most webstores have Tacklas and the 9000 is the most common high end model they stock. The price seems to be $129-$149US at most of them.

a buddy of mine gave me a new pair of RBK pants he bought at the Caps equipment sale. they didnt fit him right, so he gave em to me (lucky me)... anyways, they are really beefed up in the hip department, and I have yet to feel the effects of any falls or hits... My assumption is that the hip protection is a pro feature, so you may want to see if you can check out some pro return pants.

How's the hip protection on the S5's ?

I have the S-5's and they are phenominal all over. The hip area is the least of my worries. Feel like I'm in a flexable protective shell with these breezers and they are pretty well ventilated as well.

S5 aren't even close to a Tackla 9000 or CCM pro tack. They are a little lesser in protection than what he's already using.

I can vouch for the Tackla 9000s. Back when I played competitively, I had terrible hip pointer problems. If I got hit hard into the boards or went down to the ice on my hip, it got to the point where I couldn't sleep at night, because if it rolled over onto my hip, I'd wake up in terrible pain. If both my hips were bad, I would have to wedge myself between the wall and a pile of pillows in my bed to avoid rolling over--pretty ugly.

Finally bought some decent pants, the 9000s. They have great protection and aren't over-heavy. I haven't had a hip pointer since--knock on wood. Tackla makes a great product. If only I was as happy with all my hockey gear.

Pretty much spot on.

I just ran down and felt the hip protection, it's a stiff plastic shell in there, it shouldn't hurt if you are sized properly and take almost any kind of fall or contact, but I'm pretty sure if someone two-hands you across the hip with a wood stick you'll feel it.

So maybe it's a better choice for no-check leagues if you're not terribly under or over weight.

i use a graf girdle and shell. The girdle had good protection all around and the hip protection is great.

Again, it's less protective than his current pants.

I agree the CCM pro tacks may be a bit bulky but offer great protection. You could also try the one 90 pants. As a girdle user myself i know lots of players who swear by these 2

Just like to toss in a quick suggestion: Girlde and shell... it's probably already been said... but I bought an old cooper girdle for 20$ on ebay and the thing is a beast... most protective pant unit I've ever used.

OK, I know about Tackla pant sizing (bought a 54, could've gotten 52) - what about CCM Pro Tacks sizing ? My waist is a shade under 36" and the CCM sizing chart says I could be either a L or XL. CCM's run pretty true to size ?
