Low Lie Sticks...

Recommended Posts

Does anyone use a low lie stick? I can't adapt to the Hemsky pro-stock xxx-lite at all and therefore I need to find a replacement stick with low lie. Does anyone know who uses low lie in the NHL? I am looking to probably pick up a pro-stock stick.

Thanks.

if buying this said new stick without an old one in hand you will prolly have the problem of no lie markings on most sticks

i would suggest taking a stick that you know is what you want then compare.....

the modano/forsberg/federov curve has the lowest lies i know of. this is the curve i use because i like a low lie. oh and the easton heatley curve has the same lie.

heatley is a 5 lie, very similar curve to iginla. its funny cuz everyone loves sakic but alot of people have problems with the heel wearing out. correct me if im wrong but u should probably switch to a lower lie if your heel is wearing out. someone should come up with a sakic clone in a lower lie. i like how warrior has different lies for the same curve

The Fury Primeau pattern used to be a lower lie virtual clone of the sakic.

The sakic is fairly rockered forcing you to stickhandle on the heel a bit. Just because you're wearing out the heel doesn't mean you've got the wrong lie, as long as you feel comfortable with it. Yes, it does mean you have the wrong lie, though some people can overcome that handicap through their talents. The vast majority of people, including all of us who don't get paid to play, should be using a blade with the proper lie.

What's the easier way to find out the lie of a stick? I want to see what lie my XXX-Hemsky is since I am considering either a Draper Kronik or a Sakic Stealth right now. Both of those have 5.5 lie...are these considered high, low or average lies?

They're right in the middle of the range offered at retail but most people seem to cut 5.5 lie sticks shorter than the "standard".

I wouldn't say using what you're comfortable with is overcoming a handicap. If you're wearing out the heel, but you prefer for the puck to sit further back on your blade, you're not using the wrong lie, you're using the right lie for your own preference. I'll I'm saying is, if somebody sees that their heel is wearing out but have noticed nothing wrong or been uncomfrotable in their game, theres nor eason to switch it up.

Most of the people doing it have never used a stick with the proper lie. Watch how many of those people have problems handling, passing and shooting the puck and tell me again how it isn't a problem. See how many times those guys with the toe way up in the air fan on passes and shots, or a pass goes under their blade. You have to shift your body quite a bit to get on top of the stick and get in a shooting position when your stick forces you to carry the toe off the ice.

Absolutely, but i think you're missing my point. Don't change your blade strictly based on where it is wearing out. If you haven't noticed any issues in your game, there's probably no reason to switch your lie. You've probably just become accustomed to it or the lie suits your style. Personally, i prefer stickhandling on my heel as it keeps the puck closer to my body and it makes it quicker to get off a clean saucer. However, I appreciate what you're saying. Working at camps with kids all summer, I see alot of them who are using a lie thats way to high for them and they miss everysecond pass under their toe.

Yeah it would make more sense to have blades in different lies just like you have different flexes and different height sticks. Oh well...most of them seem to be 5 to 5.5 and the higher lies have rockered heels.

A lot of the guys around here use shorter sticks, neck and chin height in skates. Mine go almost to my eyes in skates, that's why I'm a 5 lie fan.

Actually, I think not changing because you haven't noticed a problem is a bad idea. Without another blade or lie as a point of reference, how do you know if you are using what works best for you? Using a shaft and wood blades is a (relatively) inexpensive way to experiment and I suggest it for everyone.

As for your preference on handling the puck at the heel, I do that same. The difference is the rest of my blade is fairly flat on the ice while doing so, making it much easier to shoot or pass accurately from that stickhandling position.

I use sakic curves and they work fine for me. for some reason, I can't use the Drury, I wear the heel out so much, and they are the same lie.

The bigger rocker on the Sakic makes it easier to use, but the wear on the heel of the Drury shows that the 5.5 lie is not right for you. Nobody offers a 5 lie version so you're screwed in that regard.

I'm forcing myself to get used to forsberg/forsberg clones just because it is the most readily available pattern on all sticks in 5 lie. I can't use anything over 5 which kills me because I'd love a Drury or something similar in that lie.

And i gotta go with Chadd on this one. If that tape is wearing out obviously and only on the heel then you've got issues. And sadly most are blinded by that nice big, open curve that patterns such as Sakics provide.

So cutting the stick down and making it short will help with the lie right? I lean very forward when I stickhandling and the Wellwood stick I am using is probably a 5 lie. It's hard to find a sub 5 lie....most of the curves I want to use are 5-5.5 lie.

The stick goes up to my eyes when I am standing without even shoes.
