Bauer 400 Shoulders

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a low profile, semi-protective shoulder pad that can be used in low level check leagues as well as non-contact pickup games. After sifting through the "pro shoulder pads" thread, I have done a few online searches to find that the Bauer 400's are one of the few reccomended models that are still available. Does anyone have any experience w/ them, and would you recommend them for $30?

Idk if these would classify as low profile...they have huge shoulder caps. I do like mine though, they fit nice and the protection is enough for adult league, though I have taken a couple pucks where the protection was sparse, and it stung.

I'd go with 5030s if you want lo-pro and they also cost about $30.

I've gone through your post history and I believe that you pitch these in about 50% of them. You can go ahead and tell payroll at Sher-Wood you're due for another commission because I just picked up a pair a month ago.

I wouldn't mind a bit more sternum or rib protection, but other than that, they certainly do fit the bill of being lo-pro. In other words, just what the Doctor (Hook) ordered.

I have to admit though that after reading that recent thread in the Gen Hockey section about the guy who died after taking a puck to the chest, I might be scared into going back to wearing my old linebacker-style pads.

dr hook speaks highly of the gear he uses... Everyone should find equipment that they're that happy with.

Personally, I have fallen in love with my NBH Supreme classic shoulder pads. Just like the 5030 but with better shoulder caps.

Do shoulder pads like this provide adequate protection ? Im looking to try and get something as slender as possible but with adequate protection. I have big shoulders so fitting jerseys with big shoulder pads = a difficult task.

what kind of protection are you looking for?

Does it protect your shoulders? Yes.

Does it protect your bicept? Yes.

Does it protect your chest? Yes, but larger shoulders have better protection.

Does it protect your spine? Yes, but not as well as something like a S9 or Vector 10.0.

Does it protect you abs? No.

Adequate depends on many things - contact? Slap-shots? Style of play, and where you play?

In a non-contact league, the 5030's are a great pad - even better if that non-contact league happens to not allow slap-shots, as many in my area do. I play in front of the net, which means I am often turned facing shots coming my way. I used to play without shoulder pads in that non-contact league, but after catching one in the sternum I changed that tune pretty quickly. For me a pad like the 5030 is a trade-off between protection and mobility. They are extremely mobile pads, but a hard check into the boards or a shot into the torso is gonna have some spice on it. I recently bought a pair that I use exclusively in my no-slap league. When I play my stronger, more aggressive league I wear my TPS BBA's - much like the Contours. They are supposedly low profile, but I find the shoulders pretty big - and I have your problem too - big guy, large shoulders, large shoulder pads - thight jerseys. The Vector 10 shoulders have a lot of protection and they seem to be a bit less bulky - maybe you should try them on. They only come in a XL (my TPS are XXL), but the guy at my LHS told me the V10 fits bigger than the V6.0.

Depends on what you consider a lot of pain and how you get hit. The way the shoulder caps sit on my NBH pads they are very good at protecting the front of the shoulder. For a full checking league I'd probably go back to the Nike V-11s, which is why I'm keeping those and only selling my Vectors.

You're right, I do pimp the 5030s as well as the NBH 4500 bucket and the FM480 cage. I believe in these products highly and will back them to the death.

I have these pads. They have been great this far.

The shoulder caps are pretty big, but they are light and offer decent protection. I've taken a few hits with them that hurt, but they are great overall.

My biggest gripe about the Bauer 400 is the straps. They ride up A LOT and the sides jut out when this happens. It's annoying. It's probably the way I wear them or move though.

Mine should get here tomorrow. :)

I tried the 400's, I thought they were fine protection wise for a minimalist pad but they were too narrow for my shoulders.

For the time being I sport the 5030.

In my opinion the nbh classics dont protect the front of your shoulder that well! (thats why i put bauer 4000 caps on my sb60/classics)

But they do have a chest plate under the front-lacing for protecting your sternum wich i think is a big plus compared to the sw 5030s!

I think they protect plenty, but then again the caps hug my shoulder perfectly. Maybe yours just don't fit you as well. The caps are small but they are perfect for minimal contact hockey.
