A nice shutout performance by Huet. Man oh man they still really aren't getting any help from anyone, but they do pull within 2 of the Canes since with thier loss to Tampa tonight

You know, you are the first pens fan I actually like!!!

For some fans, despite the tilt in playoffs to the pens, there is a dislike and hate, yet admiration and respect.

A lot of pens trolls on the caps boards are more on the wagon since crosby came on board.

You seem like one of the good guys

Cheers*

*still hate the pens

Haha thanks, I have loved the Pens for as long as I can remember. I just love watching exciting hockey and the Caps play some exciting hockey and I'm not gonna hate on teams unless I really hate them lol

I'm glad they picked up Huet though cause Kolzig won't be playing too much longer and Huet is good goalie that has played great since coming over to the Caps, not that he wasn't for Montreal, but the Caps needed him.

So, if the caps go 3-0 to finish the season (all home games, canes, lightning and panthers) and Ottawa go 1-2 (2 home games to tbe habs and bruins and an away game to the leafs), the caps would bump them for a spot too.

The way they have been playing of late (5-4-1 in the last 10, lost 2 in a row), that might be entirely possible.

Montreal are going to be looking to get the top spot in the east, and are only a point down, Boston are going to want to solidify their play off spot, and the leafs would love to knock the sens out.

how would have thought after such an amazing start to the season that the sens might not make the playoffs?

I was just saying that the caps are the opposite of the sens

Sens = great start, then gradually faded, fired coach, still fading

Caps = crap start, fired coach, gradually improved, still improving.

It would only be the good karma gods to put the caps in the playoffs instead of the sens.

They had their chance, multiple chances, times up, get out the way :)

Their best (and I think only) chance is to take out Carolina. How do they stand in terms of tie-breakers against Carolina? Even if the caps win their head to head, they will have the same number of points and Carolina will have one more win overall.

I need Carolina to pull this off because I live close to Raleigh. Then I somehow need a Pens/Canes playoff matchup.

Even playoff tickets in Raleigh will be cheap as hell and since the Pens sold out the playoffs in 11 minutes..this is my only chance.

Sorry Caps fans, gotta pull for the canes here! :)

Caps lose tiebreakers to the canes. I honestly in my head don't think they will make the playoffs, but in my heart I can't let it go.

Also, I organized our charity group tickets for the last game of the season, and there will be 62 of us there, so I hope to hell it's a meaningful game

This is where the NHL should kick it's self in the ass for giving a point for an OTL. On paper it looks like playoff races are close but in all actuality they aren't because a team can grab a point even though they lose. Which brings up the question a loss is a loss no matter when it happens, so why get a point for losing in OT? That is what is really keeping the Caps from truly jumping into a playoff spot is teams that keeping picking up that extra point ie Ottawa who picked up 2, Philly who picked up 4, and Boston who picked up 5. How can a team make up any ground when teams can theoretically get points every night?

When you look at the standings Philly Washington, and Boston would be tied at 80 pts if you didn't count OTL points

If you're going to give away three points some nights give away three points every night.

No just a loss is a loss, and should be counted as a regular loss no matter when it happens

Then be prepared for the most boring 5 minutes overtimes that you've ever seen.

Why, wouldn't that make it better because each team would have to play for the win instead of settling for the point for a loss in OT or shootout, but whatever it'd be boring because some one would have to win to get the points

The guaranteed point in OT is what has made overtimes more exciting. Now, teams already have 1 point in the bank and can go all out for the second point. If you take away the guaranteed point that a team gets for getting to overtime then most likely they will sit back during OT to not risk getting no points and take their chances in the shootout, especially skill teams.

What are you talking about? Do you even get what I am saying? The only points awarded in OT would be to the winning team, so each team would have to play for the win. The way OT is right now sucks donkey balls because teams are already guaranteed a point which makes it less exciting since teams really don't have to play for the win

I know exactly what you are saying. You obviously don't understand what I am saying. Teams, especially more skilled teams, not guaranteed the point in OT will not go balls out for the 2 points if it means risking getting no points at all. They will sit back and wait for the shootout.

Who do you consider skill teams.

Ottawa - 23rd in the league in shootouts this season

Detroit - 14th in the league in shootouts this season

Or are you talking about perrennial cup contenders like edmonton, who are first, atlanta who are second or the von trapps in new jersey sitting at 7th.

The shooutout is a complete crapshoot. Did you see the malik goal against kolzig in the 15th round. That kind of skill player, is that who you are talking about.

Most teams will fight for the 2 points in the OT period, rather than risk getting nothing because someone does a spinarama and knocks over the goalie, but the goal is still allowed.

Your logic is waaay off I think

And yet I'm sure their coaches would still feel pretty confident sending a threesome of Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Lidstrom or Alfredsson, Heatley, and Spezza against anybody's top three in a shootout.

You have already been proven wrong by Allsmokenopancake

Ottawa is 23 and Detroit is 14 in shootouts....
