These men and woman built the foundation of the country. It is because of them we are now living in freedom. Thanks for the ones who served and are now serving.

Boy do I feel stupid. Never heard it referred to as just Nov 11, always had Armistice Day/Veterans Day, the brain didn't draw the connection.

I'm not that slow.

Rustpot, I have to apologize for thinking that your comment was an ignorant one as i feel like a lot of people have no idea why Rememberance day is November 11th. A quick test with my family (brother, sister, mom, dad) left me speechless. I asked "what happened on November 11th?" Answer: "well it's rememberance day". Me: "I know but why was it the 11th?". They had no clue. My dad even thought it was D-day and i think he was beeing serious.

I was at the Remembrance Day parade in my home town on Vancouver Island, and got to chatting with a vet from the Second World War who served in the same reserve unit that I am in. He told me he always brought his souvenirs from France to the parade with him - would I like to see them?

So, this frail, silver haired gent reaches into his pocket, and hands me two chunks of jagged metal, each about four to five inches long, and about half an inch in diameter. They were heavy. "They dug these out of the back of my right leg. I got shot three times in my right arm as well, but they didn't keep the bullets."

It's not often words fail me, but I sure as hell marched with my head a little higher and my back a little straighter, knowing he was there.

Guy I played hockey against growing up and a relative to my brother's girlfriend died in the past year. It was pretty special of Don Cherry to play all the soldiers who have passed in his last sequence. You just never know. Tough weekend, they had a ceremonial game for him, and a former player of the same team whose only a year older than me, he's 19, flipped his truck and died.

It makes me sad to know that there are people who don't understand what it is we're remembering on November 11th. Try and appreciate that our lives would be completely different then how they are were it not for past sacrifices that have been made.

Also, don't forget to remember not just those men and women who died in the World Wars, but all those who have died in other conflicts and are currently dying in the fight to protect the freedoms we treasure.

We were packing up the hotel room on November 11th to check out and get over to the arena... MissD stopped me "Mum, it's 11, let's have a moment of silence". We had the moment and then she recited "In Flanders Fields". For some reason, that really moved me. Made me fell a little hopeful about "Lest We Forget" and, I guess, a bit sheepish... why didn't it occur to me to suggest it - I'm supposed to be the mum y'know.

Not sure if I've mentioned to her how special that moment was for me..

We had a moment of silence at the tradeshow.

Now, I know this could be seen as in poor taste, but there were some people at the show who were unaware of the holiday that thought at first it was for the actual tradeshow.

Stupid question...

Are poppies worn in the States as well? I saw a bunch of hockey games leading up to Nov 11 that took place in the states and the coaches of the US based teams had poppies on. Now, that could be because they are Canadian and were observing, or because they were playing Canadian teams and knew the games were on in Canada, and wanted to observe.

But, generally speaking...do Americans wear poppies?

You know what really pushes my buttons, is that the US has Veterans day sales! It totally takes away from the day of remembrance! Just another excuse for Big corporate America to have an excuse to make money. Very disrespectful IMO.

Anyways thanks to all the vets and soldiers serving our countries, past and present! We owe you big time!

And let us not forget the civilians, and regular people that were stuck in the middle of this battle. And also don't forget the opposing forces, like Germans. They were just like us, a lot didn't want to go to war, they were just forced. My aunt's father in-law was one and my neighbour was another. Both were like 15-16 when they were forced to fight for Germany. Thank God they made it through!
