Wade Belak: Someone will 'kill' Avery

QUOTE

Wade Belak predicts it is only a matter of time before Sean Avery gets seriously clocked.

Citing Avery's pre-game tomfoolery Saturday night as yet another example of why the instigator rule should be scuttled, Belak warns that the New York Rangers agitator is going to pay the price for his antics.

"He's pissing guys off," Belak said yesterday. "He'll bring harm to himself and not too many guys around the league are going to be sad to see it.

"If he keeps this up, someone is going to kill him. One day he's going to say something the wrong way and he'll be clubbed.

"The league should do something, especially with that warmup crap," Belak said. "The instigator rule protects guys like that. He'll fight little guys like Darcy but you'll never see him pick on bigger guys like me and then drop the gloves.

"Darcy's an agitator but he doesn't say the type of personal stuff about your family that Avery does," Belak said. "It's ridiculous. If (Avery) ever starts chirping about my family like that, he'll get a stick over the head."

If its true, i dont have anything to say. Sick eff.

Best reply ever.

Avery is a spark plug, he does what he does because it gets his team moving and in the end isn't that what you want from a player? I agree there are lines and I have no reservations about the fact that he crosses them... often. But stop chirping, Belak, and step up then. If someone's so disgusted by Avery's antics that he would come publically and call him out then site a 5 minute penalty as the reason he won't step up -- what makes him any better than the "coward" Avery who will only mess with "little guys"?

Because Avery turtles when he faces someone bigger than him

Also, taunting a guy about having leukemia in the warmups, you have no problem with.

Real classy.

If a member of your family had leukemia (and you hear how hockey teams are family), and someone taunted them about it, you would be fine, because they are just doing what they do?

LoX,

Belak wasn't dressed for the game in which the most recent Avery incident occurred. So, he couldn't step up. I'm sure he'd love to. Instead, all he could do was address the media on behalf of the team.

Now that he had made these comments, I'm sure the league would come down on Belak pretty hard if he does confront Avery on the ice. Too bad.

My favorite Avery memory is when he and Hordichuk got into a scrum after a whistle 2 years ago. Hordichuk stepped toward Avery after they broke free from the refs, and Avery fell to his knees and covered his head--literally turtled in front of an arena full of fans. No punch was ever thrown. I don't think I've ever seen a more vivid display of cowardice in the NHL. All the way to the box Hordichuk was pointing at Avery and covering his head and laughing. 2 priceless minutes in the box for him, I'm sure.

The sad thing about Avery is that there is no doubt he's got talent. It's just that he has a 14 year old brain in his 27 year old body.

The story is apparently that Avery was taunting Jason Blake about his cancer...Avery is a loser

On the same topic, I was at a rink to watch my kid play last night and Tucker was there watching his son play. My kid had been at the Leafs/Rangers game on Saturday, and he went up to Tucker and told him he liked what he did in the warm-up (insert 7 year old hockey player trying to be cool here). Tucker smiled at my kid and said, "he's not a very nice man"

Toronto players said Avery, who players accuse of flipping through team media guides for the names of wives and other information, takes trash talking too far.

"You don't dig into guys' personal lives and things like that," said Wade Belak, who was not in the lineup for Saturday's game. "When you start bringing other people into it, that's crossing the line."

I don't know what was said for sure, but based on Wade Belak's comments above (of course he wasn't on the ice so would only know second hand) it seems more likely to me that Avery made comments about a wife or family member then comments about Blake's condition. I'm sure saying something about Tucker's wife would have set him off. If Avery did say something about Blake's cancer then I do think he crossed the line. If he merely read a wife's name in a media guide and used it to get under Tucker's skin it was effective and while insulting someone's wife, girlfriend or family isn't the classiest thing to do it's not nearly as bad as making comments about a disease that could end someone's life. Getting Gary Roberts to take a 4 minute penalty because he made reference to his age is funny...Gary is old for an NHL player...he should be old enough to laugh off an age comment. Good for Avery if he can draw a penalty for an "old man" type of comment.

According to the canada.ca article listed above...

During the pre-game warmup, Avery allegedly made unkind remarks about Blake's medical condition. That prompted Darcy Tucker to stand up for his Toronto teammate. At first, Tucker and Avery jawed at one another and threw gloved punches, before settling their differences in a first-period fight.

Tucker, who has made a career of getting under the opponent's skin, said yesterday that Avery's comments to Blake were "offside." An unidentified Rangers player agreed, telling a Toronto radio reporter that he wanted to strangle his teammate for what was apparently said.

Avery is a joke. I hope some of the veterans put him in his place. He does not need to do this crap. He has some good skill and if he would use it more he would be a good player. I think it distracts him too much trying to get into someone's head.

From the Toronto Star....

Instead, it took another twist yesterday when Howard Berger of the Fan 590 reported that a player in the Rangers' dressing room told him Avery incited the initial jawing session when he directed a comment at Blake about his medical condition. Earlier this season, Blake revealed he is battling a rare but treatable form of leukemia.

I think I need to set something straight here:

1) I hardly condone Avery's behavior, I think he is a real low-blowing goon and has no concept of appropriate behavior, demeanor or stature.

2) I had no idea he was apparently poking fun at Blake having cancer.

3) I never claimed he had even an ounce of class.

3) Regardless of the prior points -- he's doing what he's always done, what he's been good at, what his role is. He's a coward? I agree. But instead of Belak running his mouth about it in the media just lay him out next game and let that speak for itself. I just think that coming to the media and talking shit and threatening him is pretty much the same thing as him -- chirping and talking. Last I checked he hasn't been "killed"... so just fucking do it already and stop talking about it. He's been the same guy for the past 4 years. This isn't new.

Yea, that's a reaaal good idea, Belak should "kill" avery instead of running his mouth. You know, a Bertuzzi type of punch or a McSorley stick to the head, that would be great, Avery won't even have time to turtle.

/Sarcasm. Are you encouraging another dirty play here? Don't you think the league had enought bad publicity already? The medias won't just say "it's ok because it's Avery". You don't injure a guy because he talks shit everygame even if he'd deserve it. Going public is a good thing to do IMO because people (like us) now realise he's not just playing his role, he's going too far. The league may then feel media and public pression against Avery and do something.
