Extra pay for working on a holiday

Recommended Posts

I will be working Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years etc. this year and my boss says there is no extra pay for working any of those days.

I always hear about people getting time and a half for holidays, so is it a law or differ by state or just the employer being nice to entice someone to work the holiday?

Any help would be appreciated, the business is in NC if that would matter.

in canada it's the law to get 1.5 pay but i'm sure a lot of mom and pap stores will cheat the system. i wouldn't go demand it from your boss unless your looking to lose your job.

Yor employer should have a poster placed in a conspicuous place detailing overtime wages by law. I vaguely remember reading that you have to get paid time and 1/2 for holidays, but I'm not sure. You can alwys contact the NC department of labor as well.

From the NC Department of Labor:

But doesn’t my employer have to pay me time and one-half if I work on a holiday or on the weekend?

No. Unless your employer has promised to pay you extra for working on a holiday or on the weekend, your employer only has to pay you for the total hours you actually worked in the workweek regardless of what day or days you worked. Your employer has to pay you at least the minimum wage or your promised rate of pay (whichever is greater) for all of the hours you work, and your employer must pay you time and one-half overtime pay based on your regular rate of pay for all hours worked in excess of 40 in a workweek unless you are exempt for a specific reason.

That is brutal, but I guess to be expected in some job markets. Everywhere I've worked shuts down Thanksgiving and the day-after, but if you get called in for work on that Friday you got an extra day off the week after. Easiest day to work.

Thursday I'll get 8 hours pay holiday plus the 8 hours I'll work, so its double time basicly, but then I'f I work a double that will be over time so thats time and a half. So if I work 16 hours thursday, I'll get paid for 28.

Its nice money, but who the hell wants to work a double on a holiday.

oh, makes me sad to read that you dont get paid extra for working on holidays. seriously

At our work we are all in union, so its all written down and the boss'es cant do shit about it.

We get 2x salary + 2x evening/nightshift bonuses on major holiday eves. and 3x salary + 3x evening/nightshift bonuses + holidaybonus on the holiday itself.

It was absolutely crazy during Black Friday/post-Thanksgiving weekend at A&F last year; anyone and everyone who wanted to work got a shift. Once your shift was over, you could either go home, or you could take another shift a few hours later, grab one of the cots we had set-up in the back room and crash for awhile before it was time to go "back" to work. The store was pretty much trashed everyday (as "trashed" as a place like that can be), so we had people working straight from close-to-open trying to get everything back in order. It was an around the clock ordeal for a few horrific days, and didn't really get much better until after the New Year.

Working retail blows 365 days a year, but blows especially hard during the holidays.

Kids at college; foreigners who don't "get" Thanksgiving.

Thats where I fell. When I moved here, thanksgiving had about as much meaning as any other thursday to me. But, my job offered double pay to work it, plus an extra floating holiday.

Since I changed jobs, and have acclimatized to the US more, Thanksgiving has become my favorite holiday. You don't have to exchange stupid presents, you don't have to decorate, you don't have to do anything but eat, drink and watch football, so now I don't work it.

I leave the office at about 1pm on wednesday, and come back monday morning, and get paid for it all, without using vacation time.

Ahhh, thanksgiving, how I love you!!!

Word (<---used in the "half-joking, oh-I'm-so-white" context). Today is my last day of classes for a week. Classes are in session tomorrow, but I only have one (English 397; Autobio/Bio - it's a fucking doozy), and the professor is going to be in Philly, so it's been canceled. I don't have to do anything but play hockey, go to "work," watch football, eat and sleep until next Monday. I'm pretty pumped.

This yeah, I think I'm most thankful for those Europeans who decided they had to move across the Atlantic because they couldn't tolerate a little religious scrutiny; that they would be much better off starving/freezing to death in the North American wilderness. It's because of your will to run away from adversity (and the fact that you were pretty much stuck here once you crossed) that I have such a wicked long break - my first since Yom Kippur back in September (UB's North Campus is located in Amherst, so the area and the school are both heavily populated by people of the Jewish faith, so we get one or two Jewish holidays off each year and none of the other "normal" ones).

Plus, dont forget that NC is an "at will" employment state. So yeah, he can fire your ass for anything. So, if he hates you i wouldnt even ask.

Do you work at the Wilmington ice house... or some other job?

Not entirely true. You can fire someone for no reason at all, but you can't fire them for things like race, religion, etc... That qualifies as discrimination, even in an at-will state.

No, I dont work at the ice house. Play there alot though :)

I work at a hotel that is owned by.. uhh.. foreigners.. who has no respect/care/idea about our holidays so I was just making sure they were not paying me overtime simply because they dont recognize it as a holiday.

Aaahhh, I remember the good old days of retail. I was a manager-type at KB Toys one Black Friday. Got to stop a fistfight over that year's Holiday Barbie. I was on double time for the entire shift, if I recall correctly. Good times... don't think I could handle that kind of work anymore.
