Penalty on Shot after Off-sides?

Recommended Posts

Our last Beer-League game was extremely "chippy", and it all started in the first period. A guy on the other team took a slap-shot at our goalie after an off-sides.

I've seen this happen in the NHL and it usually leads to some tussling, but no real fighting(usually).

In our game, it led to "bad-blood" throughout the game. Our league is supposed to be non-check, but usually there is some good contact, no big deal. But, on Sunday, guys were laying out hip-checks and coming close to blows.

I don't know if shooting at a goalie is a penalty, but, IMO, if the ref called some sort of penalty, the game would have resumed without much fan-fare. But, because of his allowing this with no reprecussions, it escalated.

Is there an actual penalty that could have been called? Unsportsman like conduct, or delay of game?

Is this even something to get worked up over? Any goalies get peeved about this?

i know at the high school level, it is a penalty for shooting after the whistle. Happened to a kid on my team last season. I don't remember exactly what the call was but i think it was a minor for unsportsmanlike conduct.

It can be an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Usually the first time it happens the ref will give a warning, unless it is really bad, then the ref will toss the kid off for 2.

The ref "warned" both teams. It was a pretty hard slapper, I thought the guy should have gotten 2 mins.

The thing that was annoying is a few players on my team spent the rest of the game trying to line up the guy who did it. We have a couple hotheads who spend too much time worrying about "getting even", rather than playing, you know..HOCKEY!

We were already down 3-0 and the guy had 2 goals already.

He was kind of an arrogant a$$, talking crap and when he did that(the shot) it just pissed everyone off. I think a minor penalty might have shifted our guys focus to trying to score on the PP, rather than any "frontier justice".

I wish it had somehow galvanized our team and we came back and turned around a pretty dismal season. But, alas, we lost 5-3 and spent the post game fighting amongst ourselves instead of kicking back some cold ones watching the Pats destroy the Bills.

;) I like to let the late shot go in the net, because someone always thinks it's a goal and it always causes a ruckus

it really depends on the ref's opinion of whether or not he had time to refrain from shooting, if it was on purpose, etc.

If so, then yes, Minor for Unsportsmanlike Conduct.

I think the velocity of the shot matters far less than how late it was after the whistle. If a guy winds up a cannon and lets it go right as the play goes offsides, yeah the goalie usually doesn't like it but I don't think that can be called a penalty. Judgement call all the way by the ref. In a beer league I notice refs don't like the call penalites as a general rule to keep the games moving along, so I think it'd have to be a pretty late shot to warrant a call.

I once saw a fight break out in drop in because a guy took a slapper from the hashmarks in warm up....goalie got REALLY mad.

It's a penalty if the guy could have stopped the shot but carried on anyway. but if he was like just about to shoot when the whistle went it wouldnt. call would usualy be 2 minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct if he went out of his way to try and shoot at the goalie.

Usually if its really late or really hard someone will go after the player, and both get penalties. It is unsportsmanlike to shoot after the whistle though, unless the ref blows it during your downswing, you should be able to stop.

in minor hockey theyd usually just give the kid a 10 min. misconduct

really? USA hockey?

cause they always tell us 2 for unsportsmanlike

this happened in my game just last night. off side was called and in his frustration, after the whistle went, one of their better players wound up and took a slapshot at our goalies head(whether it was aimed there or not) he ended up getting 2 for unsportsmanlike

I've always seen it called as a 2 minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty same as everyone else has. It'd have to be a pretty blantant intent to injure for someone to get 2 and a 10 for a late shot. That would be the only way I could see a late shot getting a guy 10 minutes is if he intentionally shot it well after the whistle at ref, coach/bench, or another player.

It can be called 2 different ways, depending upon perceived intent and aggressiveness. It can be called as a 2 min minor unsportsmanlike conduct, or a 2 min minor for delay of game. I warn the teams that I am reffing typically on the first offense as a general warning to BOTH teams. After that I will assess either penalty depending on if it is shot at the goalie, or simply away from the play.
