playing through injuries

Is there any method you guys have that takes your mind off the pain? Right now im supposed to be out because of a lumbar spinal injury but my appointments to get an mri keep getting canceled. My back is starting to feel better but this upcoming week is too important to miss.

I usually just go and play. I have played with everything from the flu to stitches in my knee and a bad back as well as broken figures. I usually go to warm ups and the adrenaline gets pumping and I forget all about it.

Don't mess with a back. You're better off waiting until it heals or you find out you can't do more damage by playing. Remember, pain is the body's way of telling you that something is wrong. Ignore it and you'll be sorry later.

Last season, i got tripped up from behind and went into the boards akwardly. Sprained some ligaments, fractured the Chaput's Tubercle, amd partial lateral tear of the achilles tendon. Injury was first week of August and Being off skates for 2 1/2 months it was difficult to start again. After weeks of therapy i got back on the ice and first thing i did was skate right up to the boards where it happened as fast as possible, and stop. I guess that was a mental accomplishment but it gave me the ability to feel "right" on the ice. It still hurts somewhat (prolly will for the next few months says my orthopedic doctor) But just the adrenaline and that feeling of being "right" on the ice helps me get through it. Now it mostly just bothers me after the games :)

I played through a broken bone in the arch of my foot, I now have a lump there from where the bone healed wrong. Bite down on your mouth guard, pop some ibeuprofin (spelling?) before the game and give it your best shot.

That being said, if you have some kind of a spinal / back injury that requires an MRI, your fucking nuts for playing dude

I'd go with chippa's advice in this situation. I've generally been cautious with injuries; the worst I've ever played with is a sprained knee or a couple of sprained fingers.

Ask yourself, "What's more important: this week or my well-being for the rest of my life?"

The answer is a no-brainer.

unless you are a pro hockey player getting paid to play you should stay off it untill you are cleared. No game (even at the pro level) is more important than your health.

Ive stayed off for a week untill sunday and participated in practice it felt pretty good. I'd play tonight but i need another doctors note saying that im cleared and my mom wont let me. Mother knows best, i guess.

What makes me mad is that the mri keeps getting pushed back, i was suppose to have it done last thursday but i needed a pre cert from the insurance company, then it was scheduled for yesterday but the machine is down after that it was scheduled for friday morning but for some reason it had to be pushed back a couple more hours untill noon. After i get the mri done I have to wait 3 days untill i can see the doctor again. It's very irratating.

Spending the rest of your life with a gimpy back because you wanted to play in a meaningless game without a concrete diagnosis would be more irratating....

Don't be a fool.

My personal idea with playing through injuries and pain is "If I continue to play, is there the possibility that the injury will get worse?" If the answer is no, then I have no problem playing. In the case of any spinal injury, the answer is most certainly "YES!" Get the tests done, follow a prescribed plan, and stay off skates until you're back to full health.

Trust me, as someone who knows, it's not worth it. It's not worth having chronic and, in most cases, agonizing pain because you want to be a hero in young age for what is ultimately a meaningless game.

Gotta agree with everyone else. Playing through external injuries is ok (cuts, bruises etc), but anything skeletal or dealing with your joints is a bad idea. Playing through it isnt going to make it any better, and may do significant damage. Not to mention you likely wont be effective on the ice anyways.

Yeah, you should definately just sit out til you get the MRI. I am 43, and tore my ACL in my right leg when i was 18. I didn't want to miss a couple of football games, so I just played through it. I could barely run, but I did it anyway. In the end I have a knee that was finally repaired two years ago, but I also have a ton of arthritis (akin to a person in their 70's), and almost constant pain. I should have just taken the time out, gotten it fixed when it happened, and I am sure I would have been better off than the damaged knees I have now. It may seem like a long wait, but trust me in the grand scheme of things, it is nothing.

Chris

They told me i have an acute fracture in L4 vertebrae. I'm pretty glad I didn't play on this. I'll be back in 3 weeks. It does sound pretty bad ass though.
