So, reffing last week my fellow linesman called a hooking with five seconds left on the clock. The captain of one of the teams (who had moaned about everything the entire game) gets up in his face and tells him to, "Read the rules sometime, faggot." us refs are also players. The other ref responded by sacking the whiner and we had us an interesting fight. Ref vs. player fights are not too common, right?

that's happened with my team once

there's this one ref that we think absolutely hate us and just calls everything he can against us. so one day one of the goons on my team decided to fight the ref

No. The player was ejected for the rest of the season for calling him a "faggot" and the ref didn't get in trouble because I stepped in and 'spiced' up the truth a bit. The player really did have it coming. He also did get his butt handed to him.

Guys chirp at refs at every level, from rookie beer league through to the NHL. At most levels, it's pretty pointless and stupid, but refs should realize it's going to happen. If a player crosses the line, then that's what misconducts are for. Personally, I think a ref instigating a fight with a player over a comment like that is beyond bush league. The guy sounds like an ass clown to me.

That still doesn't make it right.

There's no doubt that the guy deserved punishment, but that's what penalties and suspensions are for. A ref instigating a fight with a player is just as sad as a player hitting a ref.

And of course, with your selective truth, the ref probably won't be punished.

How is instigating a fight defending himself? Did the big bad player's words hurt the ref? I wish I could start a fight everytime someone chirped at me during a game.

I assume you aren't reffing for a living. If you think you're being paid poorly for the crap you have to put up, either ask for a wage increase, find something better to do with your time, or suck it up and realize that neithers players nor refs are perfect, and both are sometimes assholes.

If I were in this situation, I would let each bench know that complaining and arguing will not be tolerated during the game, maybe give each team a warning, and then start handing out penalties. Be proactive before it gets out of hand.

I reff because I enjoy doing it and I am fair and proactive most of the time.

However, when you have a single guy chirping over every call made (also not the captain or assistant) at a 2 AM game, it gets pretty irritating. We have to play these guys later ourselves and ejecting a guy for chirping would get you targeted more so than just putting him in his place.

However, when you have a single guy chirping over every call made (also not the captain or assistant) at a 2 AM game, it gets pretty irritating. We have to play these guys later ourselves and ejecting a guy for chirping would get you targeted more so than just putting him in his place.

Give the guy a warning, and then if he continues to bitch throw him out of the game. You shouldn't be allowed to ref and play in the same league, it just leads to all types of problems.

If you don't like it then stop reffing. Problem solved. How exactly was your pal defending himself by scrapping with a player? Was he hurt so badly with the guy's words? Honestly, a simple misconduct works a lot better than being as asshole. Dollars to donuts, the next time you ref that team there will be some high clear outs. Pay attention.

I actually reffed and played in the same league for a few years. If you are a good ref then there won't be any problems.

As a 10 year official, yes. The intergrity of the game is far more important than covering for a guy. If he didn't do anything wrong, you wouldn't have to cover for him. If he did do something wrong, he needs to man up and deal with the consequences.

In response to your statement about "being a rat," don't forget that you're a referee. Your job in itself suggests that you have a sense and integrity and the ability to act objectively and without any ulterior motives. You're not being a rat, you're doing your job.

Lest we forget that you are actually being paid for your services as a ref by this league. Your employer probably wouldn't think very highly of you if they were to discover that you were withholding information from them regarding the incident at hand.

There are a number of local officials who complain about me because of my honesty. Many of the local guys wearing stripes don't have the integrity to do to blow the whistle on themselves or their partners.

I was reffing a game last season and wasn't quite quick enough on my feet to hop on the ledge, so I let it hit me. Player says "get out of the way you fucking fatass." Now I know I could have jumped to the ice to get out of the way, but it was a fast clearing shot from the corner. I just yell back "then don't shoot it right at the big guy standing on the boards!"

Now I take offense to being called a fatass, not because I'm not just because it's mean, but if I had called him for unsportsmanlike over that I would have the whole team taking shots at me.

Reffing and playing in general leads to conflict. I had a team that was mostly refs and they wanted me to call every time someone lifted their stick, and the captain wrote on the gamesheet that we were calling the game one-sided.

Another time I was playing and I took a stick to the helmet. I was on my knees, but I still got cracked pretty good in the side of the head. I went up to the ref who is a buddy of mine and tell him he's gotta call that. Not 5 minutes later I get cracked in the head again to where it knocks me over. Refs blows the whistle and comes up to me and asks what penalty to call. I shook my head and said "2 minute high sticking at least." That made the other team really happy... yeesh.

Isn't college rec league real fun? :D
