Philly Strikes once again.

LMAO @ this thread.

Yeah, what Hartnell did was vicious.

You do realize he let up, right?

My god....I wonder what half of you would think of hockey in the pre Buttman era. Holy shit...it's appears Bettman's influence has trained and brainwashed a generation of figure skaters.

Hockey's future never looked so bright! /sarcasm

DIdn't see the hit so I'm not going to comment on that part. There has been a significant reduction in the amount of respect players are showing each other. It has been discussed many, many times over by coaches, commentators and players. As long as organizations continue to draft and put those guys on the ice, you are going to see the cheap shots continue.

During the 70s there was a stupid amount of violence in the NHL and something was done to attempt to reduce it. For the most part it worked. If the league is unable to get a handle on the recent spate of cheap shots and borderline players, it will continue to suffer. The NHL needs exciting, offensive players in order to thrive as it did in the early 90's. Having talented young guys on the shelf with injuries and marginal players on the ice throwing borderline (or worse) hits is just going to continue the NHLs tailspin in overall popularity. It's also going to continue to have an impact on the number of kids whose parents allow them to play hockey.

well put Chadd! i see it everyday- our game is shrinking because of this kind of stuff.

the level of respect in the NHL is getting bad, but the level of respect in minor hockey(keep in mind i play minor hockey) makes me sick. its just awful. nothing to this calibre(at least not game to game) but consistently there are players who are only out there to make their teammates bang their sticks with a massive(usually dirty) hit. im not saying dont hit anyone, im not saying dont throw a big hit if you have the chance. for example, pretty much every big hit Scott Stevens ever threw was a great, clean, devastating hit. Campbells hit a couple years ago was great stuff, the Umberger was looking for the puck in his feet and he payed the price. Downie's hit this year is a prime example of whats going on in minor hockey. a player gets rid of the puck, and a player from the other team goes too far trying to "finish a check". this doesnt always result in injury, but more often than not it does. if coaches as well as NHL players(by example) dont teach respect in hockey, soon enough it will be all gone. hockey can be a physical sport filled with big hits and fights, but this can all be done with respect and thats whats missing in the modern game.

Lol Scott Stevens is a bad example, that guy has more than his share of really late hits. His hit on Kariya being a prime example.

Or Kozlov or Lindros or the guy from Carolina or .....

Prime example of a headhunter in the last half of his career.

LOL gotta laugh at "the guy from Carolina". It was only Ron Francis. Poor Ronnie, never gettin any props. :P

at anyrate, this suspension is ridiculous. i'm going to paste what a firend wrote on another board, as they heard bettman on the radio:

Just tuned Bettman on XM and he was asked about this.

Said that while the player (Alberts) was in a vulnerable position and you might argue that he targeted the head, there were clear "no" answers to the other criteria used in handing out a suspension (leaving the feet, late, severity of injury).

I jotted down the 5 he mentioned that are on "the list" - I know we've discussed them before but thought I'd list them again:

leaving the feet

targeting the head

unsuspecting or vulnerable position

late

causing injury

he said that the NHL felt that Hartnell did pull up some (specifically mentioned that he "threw snow") so I guess he got partial credit on the targeting head point

so you're saying you're down with the nasty hits that leave someone injured (Bergeron) and now maybe Alberts? somethings loose.

Did I say that? Jesus...you want to talk about something being loose pal? You're the one with the screen name Purple Cobra! You might want to talk to someone about repressed feelings.

hahahaha guess you have no idea about a movie called dodgeball :)

I'm sorry the first thing that come to mind isnt a male organ...

I know that many have taken issue with the NHL's "apparent" (and obvious) focus on suspensions that are based on the injuries received as a result of the act, but has Bettman or any other official previously come out and listed "severity of the injury" as a criteria to consider in a suspension?

AFAIK, they haven't come right out and said that before. Maybe they'll finally catch some flak for having that policy in effect. It's akin to "eye for an eye," in that the suspension is almost a retaliation for the injury, as opposed to a punishment for the misdeed.

All that said, Jones' hit on Bergeron irrefutably had 4 of the 5 criteria and he got the same suspension.

the league needs to do something about this, it's getting ridiculous

As I've said before, firing Colin Campbell is the first step. Maybe the Leafs will bail out the rest of the NHL and hire him as the GM.

For me the 2 game suspension is not the worst part... the worst part is that the one referee has perfect position at the hit(standing 10feet from the incident).... and doesn't even call a penalty or blow the whistle!!!

How do guys get to the NHL and still have no idea how to throw a hit?

Are checking clinics in order?

1. Because refs don't call it at ANY level

2. That's how he got to the NHL

3. He has no role in the NHL other than being a headhunter

Forget the refs - if someone tries to take my teammate's head off like that, I'm going after him (and I'm a guy who makes teams to put the puck in the net...so whenever I go after anyone, it's more of a statement than anything else). Throwing elbows like that, I'd have to think that he's had run-ins with players much bigger and more physically imposing than myself at some (multiple) point(s) in his past. You'd think these guys would have been beaten straight by the time they make The Show.

Exactly the opposite, the system creates guys like this.

...and Philly signs them.

I'm thinking about hitting the weights extra hard this summer, forgetting everything I've ever learned about hockey, losing my integrity/self-control and seeing if maybe I can't make my way into that organization. I've got skill - but not enough to make an NHL roster...but that doesn't seem to bother the Flyers' organization one bit. Fuck, I think that might appeal to them.

Regardless of what happens (or doesn't happen) to this guy, the team should be fined heavily.

Gary is (still) running the show. In other words, the NHL is a world where every single day is something of an "Opposite Day" where executive decisions are concerned. Just because they SHOULD be fined doesn't necessarily mean that they will be. Stevens himself should have been penalized weeks ago, but nobody is being held accountable.

If Gary gets involved they're long suspensions. If Colin gets to make the call, it's never more than two games.
