The D has looked MUCH better since they started trapping. If their wasn't this talented, they wouldn't have been able to play a wide open game. The "openness" came from the D-men jumping into the play and pinching down. They've been much different and much better lately.

That's what im saying, their d should be trapping, when they were playing wide open they were losing pretty consistently because they couldnt score 5 or 6 goals every game for the 4 or 5 that they were letting in. I still think they could use a stay home that isnt hal gill.

Whats wrong with Hal Gill? Besides the fact that he is chipping in offensively and successfully rushing it at times, he has been consistently good in his own end. He is one of the two or three Leafs who have been good throughout the season.

As a lifelong Bruins fan, I couldn't help but chuckle reading this.

He has been a surprise this season.

To be honest, in the cap era I think you can do a LOT worse than Hal Gill as your 4th or 5th d-man.

He only plays a ton of the PK and shuts down other team's top lines. Who would want that? He has his shortcomings, and they are obvious, but he maintains a plus while consistently playing against strong opposition lines and being paired with Toronto's weakest defender.

He's paired with himself? Look, you folks might love him but we had more than enough of Hal Gill here in Beantown. Enjoy.

I'd have to agree with Chippa 100%. I keep waiting for the other Hal Gill shoe to drop in Toronto. His time in Boston was underwhelming at best.

That happened last year.

From what I've seen this year I'd take Gill over any blueliner from the Bruins, Chara included.

Seriously, who writes your material? This is comedy gold.

Yeah, Gill's +49 over his last 4 full seasons in Boston, playing virtually every game...that must have been really hard to swallow.

+11 for us last year playing all 82 games on a brutal defensive team with arguably the worst starting goaltender in the league. Who's Boston got? Andrew Alberts? Nice. At least the Bruins play a really exciting brand of hockey...oh wait

Take the number of times a Hal Gill pass hits a teammate's stick and subtract from that the number of times he gets spun by an opposing forward. I guarantee you get a negative result every game.

I'd take Alberts over Gill any day and twice on Sunday. First, he isn't slow as molasses. Second, he can actually make a pass. Third, he isn't afraid of throwing the mitts or leveling opponents.

You know what, you're right. Toronto is a much better defensive team than Boston. I suppose that is why TO has given up 28 more goals this season. Oh.....wait.........

Let me know when that becomes an actual stat, and then I'll give you credit for something.

Toronto is not a better defensive team than Boston. Toronto has five offensive defensemen and one stay at home guy. The Toronto forwards have all had problems fitting into the defensive system, although lately its been a whole lot better. Gill is slow, you're not the first one to point out that blatantly obvious fact. The game he plays doesn't require him to use speed, but rather his body and positioning. Its obvious that you've either watched zero Leafs games this year, or your head has been so far up your ass that you just don't notice the obvious. Gill plays physical, but doesn't fight. There are three or four guys on the roster ahead of him who are more than willing to.

Gill plays physical? This keeps getting funnier. He was actually quoted once, explaining how he was so reluctant to hit, because he was afraid he might hurt an opponent due to his size. I wish I could lay my hands on the article. It was a classic.

It's ironic that the you continue to bitch and moan about a guy who has the same defensive problem as your #1 D-man who makes 7.5 mill a year. Chara struggles with speed and outlet passes.

It's funny how you've continued to post crap over and over again. It took you a number of posts before you even made a point. Which is essentially that Gill's slow (thanks tips) and isn't a great passer (terrific).

Physical play is a number of things, it's working in hard areas, like corners and the front of the net, grinding away with other players, clearing the crease. He doesn't throw many big hits, but he gets alot of bumps in. Then again, most of your points come from his time as a Bruin and this is thread is discussing him play almost 2 years later.

Now you seem to be unable to accept he is playing well. He's scoring more points than most people would've ever expected, he's playing a shutdown role well and leading the Leafs PK out of the gutter. Making 2 mill a year. What more do you expect? It's clear the problems he has aren't hurting the team.

The Leafs have been in a slump lately, and Toskala is out. I just watched the Rangers / Leafs game yesterday (Sat 29 Dec), 6-1 for the Rangers I think, lots of PP goals for the Rangers. I didn't know that Sundin is a penalty killer, but he was out there for a 5-on-3. This was the first meeting between these teams since Avery and Tucker had the pre-game warmup scuffle, but the Leafs didn't seem to show that much emotion.

One good thing was that the play-by-play team on CBC was Hughson, Millen, and Simpson...
