Foam for helmets

Recommended Posts

I have a Bauer 5000 and have been wearing it for...2 years now.

It's in great condition except for the one piece of foam at on the forehead. It's getting hard and the glue is coming off.

Is there anyway to replace it?

Get a mouse pad, cut the pieces you need and use contact cement to attach it. Use the cloth covered mouse pad and glue down the foam side. You will also be able to find the mouse pads in different thicknesses.

Ti-girl, nothing against you, but, in general, I love how people have no problem spending $200+ on a OPS, MANY times over, and yet, they won't buy a new helmet every year or two to protect their brain, their head. This shows how fucking stupid hockey players are!

Is there any need to protect a ten cent head?

You've proven my point...

I like the idea of using a mousepad if the little comfort strips come off.

Not to be disrespectful, but how so? I have an RBK 8k helmet, and that stupid forehead strip fell off when I wore it for the 3rd time. I found it after the game (lukily) and glued it back in. I wouldn't use mousepads for concussion / fracture prevention. Nor would I continue wearing a bucket that rubbed my forehead raw.

Nash Sports sells VN in pre-cut pieces and sheets for exactly this purpose. However, I'm almost positive they don't sell EPP and even more certain they don't sell it with that 'antibacterial' applique. They have a website, but it isn't great; just Google them, get their number and call. Their prices are very reasonable.

That said, you should almost certainly be looking at a new helmet. Technically, Nash carries that foam to replace the interiors of custom-made goalie masks that are basically indestructible shells with replacable cages and liners, but it's the same foam.

I never made my reply to try to save anybody from buying a new helmet, I just thought it was a comfort issue. I have a couple of the 6K's and have an issue with one small spot. The extra foam took care of it. I certainly didn't want anyone assuming I was some kind of jack ass. In fact along with my 2 6k's I also have a couple of 8500's. Hockey gear is kind of my passion and I like to tweek things if need be. A good friend is an AHL equiptment mgr. and we are always giving each other ideas. Some of you might not believe some of the tricks I've picked up from my friend. Being an equipt. mgr in the minors is deff alot different from those in the NHL. They deff have top notch equipt but with their budgets sometimes things are done on the fly.

I'd just buy a new helmet. It's not worth it unless you're trying to salvage a non-readily available helmet like a carbster or ht-2 or something.
