What is the cause of his drastic loss of offensive production the last two years (in Montreal and Chicago)? I have not seen the Blackhawks play this year, but I have read that he has been a healthy scratch a few times.

Simple...he was never that skilled to begin with. A lot of his production with the Bruins can be contributed to playing with a close knit group of people (pre injury). After Thornton was traded, it was only a matter of time before Sammy was shipped out too. I never thought the guy was anything that great, and now he is even worse because he can't find a home anywhere. My guess is he goes back to the Mother Land next year.

Add in the fact he has had several debilitating injuries throughout his career. He had a tendency to do too much with the puck, etc. He was a great stickhandler but the wrist injuries caught up with him.

Never that skilled? Name me another player who won the rookie of the year award in the IHL at 17 and the NHL at 18. I won't bother waiting.

I never thought he was that good to begin with sorry it's just my opinion, and my eyes were on Thornton...considering they were drafted the same year. I was more interested in Joe's development as a player after seeing him play in Sault Ste. Marie when I visited in 96.

Lack of skill is definitely not the problem.

IMO he never had much to begin with, and now it's just declining even more because he is being shifted from team to team every year and can't find a home. That's brutal on a guy's confidence. He is a strong skater/shifty stick handler, but just can't find the back of the net anymore.

As someone mentioned, his wrist surgies have really effected his skill which is based on quick hands. He was never a good fit in Montreal which also didn't help so an injured, unconfident version of his former self are the two main reasons imo.

When did he have wrist surgeries? I know he had one in December of 2002. He played well in 2003-2004 and 2005-2006. If his wrists were shot, he probably would not pass the team physicals (see, e.g., Zhamnov).

Being a hawks fan, I watch the majority of the games. From interviews and commentary I have found out that they want him to be one of the top 6 forwards otherwise he wouldnt be as effective, so he has to pick up his game in practice and show he can be one of thoes players.

Not this season, at that price anyway. Wouldn't be surprised to see a team with little scoring depth take a chance on him next year at a contract much closer to league minimum.

I see the Russian Super League in his future.

You'd be looking at a 800K cap hit for the rest of the season.

No goals, 4 assists, -7 in 23 games? He'd have to be paying someone to take him ...and they'd still probably say no.

He'd fit in on the leafs.

I had Samsonov in my hockey pool last season, after he looked pretty promising in the preseason on a line with Koivu. However, that line didn't pan out as planned and he ended up being on of my worst picks.

With his poor numbers this year and his contract, I'm very surpised he's back in the NHL.

So, any 'Canes fans with opinions on why they picked up Samsonov? Do they need more scoring from one of the other lines? Where would he fit in?

Isn't Williams on the IR too?

Yeah but Chicago has a ton of yong guys to plug into those holes. They aren't in the same situation as Carolina.
