Stick Flexes

Recommended Posts

re: my post about Jr./minor pros using 100 plus flex for games and 80 plus flexes during daily duffer games. I asked around and it appears as though a good deal of these guys play D but love to play up when at drop-in so they choose a whippier stick. I guess they don't worry about using different gear throwing them off. I am experienced yet relatively unskilled 34 yr. daily drop-in player/beer leaguer who grew up using woodies and am loving the choices available now. I'm kidding myself as to how much diff. it makes to my game but ya gotta be comfortable with your stick psychologically and physically. Using One70 87 flex minus one inch. Decent cheapish stick.

I'm about 6-feet-tall, 170 pounds. I've always used relatively short, "whippier" sticks. Currently, my 85 Flex AK27s are all cut-down to an inch or so above my nipples (on skates). Obviously, cutting them down so far takes a fair amount of whip out of the stick, but I can still generate a lot of flex while shooting and passing the puck.

I've tried using stiffer sticks, and just didn't like it. I'm a very "wristy" shooter, so the softer flexes seem to generate a lot of energy without a lot of work on my part. The sticks take care of the "pop" while my hands, wrist and arms just work together as a sort of steering wheel; I just pick a spot and flick my wrists. I do sometimes have problems with my sticks "maxing-out" on slappers and one-timers, but I've found that choking-down with my bottom hand on the shaft a bit lower nearly eliminates the problem, and dropping to one knee (à la Hull) certainly helps with one-timers, especially when moving with an odd-man rush.

As with anything else, it's all personal preference. There are a lot of variables - size, strength, technique, style. I've tried just about everything out there, and there are things that I've liked and disliked in every variation.

Shouldn't we also take into consideration if a person is using, a standard shaft or a tapershaft/ops.

When I use tapershafts 95flex is perfect for me, using standard a 90flex is requried and using ops I nedd a 95flex..

But it also depends on the stick, if I was using the s17 I'd need to use a 100flex...

So do I prefer using a 90flex or a 100flex? It all depends on the stick type and brand, and then on top of that my own PP.

This year I've settled on 95 or 85 flex sticks. I just broke my 85 flex stick so I picked up an SL which was the last one left in the store and 100 flex. I find that my passes are so much more crisp and hard/accurate when i use a whippy stick and can lean into it. I haven't used my SL yet, so i'll edit my post later and see how it feels compared to my 85 that i'd been using for a month.

Since this is turning into another "I use X" and we already have a dozen or so of those, we're closing this up.
