Ference tonight in Bruins game, Big Hit, Great Fight

Recommended Posts

Not to mention it sparked the Bruins' offense for the night...anyone that says fighting has no place in the game deserves to be shot in the face.

Apparently we have a hater here...which is fine. You are entitled to your opinion. You just don't see the significance of this type of play because you aren't a B's fan who has sat through two pitiful seasons awaiting another team that will play with some heart.

No hate here, just a simple play, i'm not going to put out bias opinion about my favorite team.. I do understand the significance of a big hit but lets not get carried away, you get no points for catching a guy with his head down...

I deserve to be shot in the face. That was a legitimate hit which should have been commended by both sides. Instead, one player starts a fight to stick up for his teammate -- even though nothing wrong had happened -- because he knows there is no serious repurcussion to fighting.

Compare that to the NFL, where hits like that happen at least five times a game. I've seen fights for dirty play in the trenches in the NFL, but I don't recall ever seeing fights for legitimate hits.

That's because you get ejected from the game if you fight in the NFL.

I think there is a place for fighting in the NHL, but I agree that this was a case where there definitely shouldn't have been one.

if that was chara throwing the hit it would have been directly in the head - but with ference you dont have to worry about that..he's just too short

if it was a dirty hit i would say an opposing player should stick up for him and fight - but that was actually a clean hit. there's no rule that says you can't stick up for your teammates even if it is a clean hit though.

I agree. I love the fights, but it's just stupid if a fight gets started because of a clean hit. Yes it was a big hit, but there is no need for a fight in that situation.

A fight in response to a clean hit isn't stupid, it sends a message. If you rail my guy you're getting a full serving of rights with a side of lefts. Of course, losing said fight doesn't really get the message across.

I agree, if it's clean, just keep playing and try to pay back with your own clean hit...

I agree 100%. Maybe it's the reason you only see a handful of big hits a game...if you're lucky.

The only thing fighting after a clean hit does, is deter hitting.

Very true, but think about this - With the speed the hit occurs can Nichol recognize whether it is clean or not? My guess is he sees a big hit that looks dirty to him because it is on his teammate, so he does what his coach drills into him - he stands up for his teammate.

Good thing the Oil didn't hold guys that hit Gretz accountable.........oh.........wait........nevermind.

Go watch soccer if this fight bothered you so much because there was nothing wrong with it. I'd rather see 1 of these fights between Ference and Nichol than 10 "let's fight because we're goons" fights.

It's great to see this from the B's. I'm so glad they have some guys that are able to make big hits and answer the call when its time to drop the gloves. Unlike last season where they were the weakest link. This play is what won the game for the Bruin's. It got the fans going and excited the bench. Good start for the second half of the season. As for beating the Habs...let's not go there.

Never said it bothered me. I just don't think a clean hit warrants a scrap, key word here is clean. Erat didn't seem to have an issue with it. He got up and skated away. No clue why Nichol's took exception.

Goon vs goon does nothing for me either.

Good clean hit. Get up, take a number and finish the next one.

I guess you miss the point of protecting your skill players. Sometimes that means calling a guy to task who lays one of your guys out. Clean or not, hits to your skill players should be answered.

Only if the other guy obviously took a run at him. I'm not saying you shouldn't drop the gloves with a guy who was sent out there for the sole purpose of hitting a skilled player, but Ference was just making the correct defensive play.

SalmingUSA I have to respectfully disagree, in football you see after just about every play someone running their mouth or taunting. They know there is nothing the opponent can do. I would much rather see a fight than the crap you see in football, basketball, or baseball.

I'd hate to be a skill guy on your squad.
